(Jamie)Joyce DeVauxEnglish Conversation I2012My free timeIn free time we can take part in many activities. Sports, games, social and cultural events are options which we have for our free time. In my case, I would like to do two things in my free time.First, I like reading books. I usually bring by books with me so, if I have a free time or waiting for someone I can read those books in order for me not to waste my time. I know some old sayings which goes like “A good book is same with a friend who is good.” and “A book is heirloom that great genius leaves to mankind.” Therefore, Reading books is the best way to learn thing which I never had the chance to experience.Second, I prefer to watch American Dramas like Lost, Gossip girl and CSI. Especially, I do like to watch Lost, because one of famous Korean actresses is in that Drama who is Yun-jin Kim, and funny thing is sometimes players speak Korean in that drama. When I watch The American dramas I can learn not only listening but also speaking. At that time, I don’t have to study English. I just need to enjoy the dramas, so I think the one of way to study English is to enjoy English with no stress. As a result, free time is also precious time to us. We can do some beneficial things during free time, so I would like to do as much as I can during my free time.
Was John D. Rockerfeller a “Robber Baron”? When I had that question, I thought what is “Robber Baron” so I found that mean at the internet. A robber baron initially referred to a feudal lord, usually in Germany, who charged huge tolls for those shipping goods through their lands. More recently, during the American Industrial Revolution, a robber baron was a person who made enormous amounts of money in business. Robber baron was an insulting term implying that a person used unfair business practices and showed little sensitivity to the common worker. It is certainly the case that early workers in factories suffered inhumane treatment, and worked in horrible conditions. Little regard was given to worker safety, or to giving workers even a fair amount of time off. Many immigrants of the 19th century became factory workers, and were, because of language barriers, less able to stop abuses. The robber baron typically opposed unionization, as this would cost more money. So his money was often m from the robber baron could usually quell controversy or media attention if needed.According to this meaning, I think John D.Rockerfeller was a “Robber Baron” when he was developing his company. In 1859, several months before his 20th birthday, Rockefeller entered into business for himself, forming a partnership with a neighbor, Maurice Clark. Due to Rockefeller’s natural business abilities, Clark & Rockefeller earned a small profit their first year in business and the company became very successful.Their business expanded rapidly during the Civil War and the company continued earning a profit for the two partners. In 1863, Rockefeller and Clark entered the oil business as refiners. Cleveland had become a major refining center for the booming new oil industry. Together with a new partner, Samuel Andrews who had experience in oil refining, and two of Maurice Clark’s brothers, they built Andrews, Clark & Co. The five partners disagreed about financing the company’s expansion and in 1865h Andrews, formed Rockefeller & Andrews. Rockefeller, at the age of 24, leveraged the business and expanded intensely. He plowed all his profits back into the business and took decisive steps to strengthen his company. In 1870 he organized The Standard Oil Company. Rockefeller felt the state of the oil business was in disarray. Entry costs were low and the market was glutted with oil and a resulting high level of waste. He felt the inefficiency of the smaller firms, in their attempts to survive, drove the prices down below the production costs and hurt the larger more efficient firms like his own.His solution was one large company, vertically integrated, controlling the refining and storage of oil, and the manufacturing of ancillary products such as paint and glue. By 1872, Standard Oil had purchased and controlled nearly all the refining firms in Cleveland. Standard Oil prospered and all its properties were merged in 1882 into the Standard Oil Trust, which was effectively one giant comn business, Rokerfeller bribed officials, threatened competitor, took advantage of his employees, and cared little for the environmental impacts of his industries. According to, he was a “Robber Baron”.However, he changed his business mind. In 1896, Rockefeller decided to give up leadership of the day-to-day business of Standard Oil and focused his efforts on philanthropy. Ever since he was a boy following his mother’s teachings, he had contributed to his church and other charities, and from the mid 1890’s until his death in 1937, Rockefeller’s activities were all philanthropic. Rockefeller hired the Reverend Frederick T. Gates who had worked with the American Baptist Education Society and the University of Chicago to help him manage his philanthropy.Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement. His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy with foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education, and scientific reh, and were instrumental in the eradication of hookworm and yellow fever. He is also the founder of both University of Chicago and Rockefeller University. He was a devoted Northern Baptist and supported many church-based institutions throughout his life. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life.He married Laura Celestia in 1864. They had four daughters and one son; John D. Rockefeller, Jr. "Junior" was largely entrusted with the supervision of the foundations. In 1897, his son, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. assisted Gates and with their advice, Rockefeller established a series of institutions that are important in the history of American philanthropy, science, medicine and public health that continues today. As a result, I think John D.Rockefeller was an unconscionable manipulator. However, he changed his mind and had a significant contribution for others. It has a great effect on the rapid development of national economy as a whole. Therefore, He .
The last day, I went to Universal studio to see all the things which were watched on Hollywood movies like houses, cars, lakes and so forth. There were many marvelous and exciting stuffs. After that I went to Korea town. It was big pleasure for me to eat Korean food after a long interval. I think, I had a wonderful time in Los Angeles. If I have a chance again, I will really want to go there sometime.
