Is it Good Way to Study Languages AbroadWhen People Are Young ?These days, many people go English-speaking countries to learn English. It is a very good way to practice in English. Learning English abroad can give them many advantages and many disadvantages. Recently there has been a sudden increase for youth to go to English speaking countries in Korea. It is very hard to count them, but it is estimate at 2~30 thousand(Pd30 2003) .Why do they want to learn English? If someone uses English well, he or she can enroll in university easily. The universities in Korea choose students by their own methods. Universities in Korea have their English test. Some universities want just TOEFL® or TOEIC® scores. With those scores, people also can find good jobs.Nowadays, many people want to learn English because of university or work. In fact, if someone doesn’t use English, they cannot get a good job. Although learning English abroad can be very hard, it is useful. So, parents wish that their children learn English when they are still young because they think young people can adapt to foreign languages easily. However, there is rapid increase of people who go abroad early to study English. According to the minister of education in Korea, 1.7% of students studied languages abroad in 1999. In 2000, it increased to 3.7%, and it was 6.0% in 2001. At the present time, it is estimate at 10%. But many experts say that these numbers don’t include all students who is studying abroad( HYPERLINK "mailto:shpark@moe.go.kr" shpark@moe.go.kr 2004).The first problem is money. They have to use a lot of money. The increase of students who study abroad results in a loss to the country. From 1 Jan. 2003 until 30 Jun 2003, they used over 820 million dollars. 2 years ago, they used 432 million dollars according to the Bank of Korea. But this also doesn’t include everything. The experts say, “During the last year, it estimates the students used almost 5 billion dollars.”( Economic Statistics System Home Page. 2003)The second problem is young people can easily losts their roots. It is very important to set up who they are. Language can help find their indentity. Recognizing themselves takes about 15 years at least . Why does it take so long? It’s because language needs culture, environment and so on. For example, it’s very difficult for people who don’t use English to know the differences among fair, justice and impartiality. Young students can learn those things easily, but it can confuse them between two cultures. They don’t know both languages perfectly. They cannot find who they are because they are confused between languages. After learning their own language, it’s better to learn other languages.A rapidly increasing number of students who study languages abroad causes a loss to the countries. Above all, studying languages when they are young makes them confused. They cannot belong to both. However, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t learn 2 languages. After setting up their own language, they should learn another language. They are still young, so they can learn whenever they want. Think more carefully.Naver Open Dictionary Home Page. 27 Aug. 2003.
