Although it is a new trend for youth, many elders still think that living together before getting married is not a good idea. However, I think that living with a partner is better before getting married.
11/02/2009English 90The Effects of ImmigrationThe United Nations defines immigration is that a person who moves to a country other than that of his or her usual residence for a period so that the country of destination effectively becomes his or her new country of usual residence. In short, immigration is migration to another country for the purpose of permanent settlement. There are various, complex reasons for immigration: for better education, job opportunities, health conditions, etc. For example, when my mother suffered from a heart disease, her doctor advised immigration to a warmer country such as Malaysia or the Philippines. Immigration is difficult to accommodate due to numerous reasons. Many immigrants feel cultural difference. Every country has its own culture, which is usually different than the native culture. Food is the most distinctive culture. For example, Koreans eat rice and kimchi daily as the main dishes, but unlike Koreans, other countries do not eat rice or kimchi. Therefore, Koreans have to adjust their tastes and eating customs to the immigrated country, which can be extremely difficult. In addition, in Korean culture, it is common sense to bring gifts of gratitude when invited to an informal gathering or party at a person’s home. However, Koreans are often embarrassed because not all cultures are familiar with bringing gifts when visiting someone’s home. No one should be biased to cultural differences. People should not be ashamed of the cultural diversity, but instead, they can try to adapt to the differences. One’s efforts to try to accommodate to the new country and developing trust and respect for other cultures are the most important factors that can reduce difficulties of immigration.Language can create a sense of alienation to the immigrants. Language is essential when it comes to communication. When my mother went to Malaysia at first, she could not go shopping without my brother because she couldn’t speak English or the Malay languages. Because she could not communicate, she felt mental tension and confusion. Many immigrants want to return to their native country because differences in language cause difficult in communication. If they cannot communicate with others, they might feel a sense of isolation that could be apt to carry many diseases. Although children can quickly learn any language that they are exposed to, it is very difficult for adult immigrants to learn a new language because they are too accustomed their native tongue. Problems caused by miscommunication can be prevented by advanced preparation about the country. Before immigrants go to abroad, they should prepare themselves by studying the language and having the mindset to adapt to the new cultures.Lastly, immigrants feel homesick. Living in another country can be harder than expected. Although there are personal differences, most of them feel homesick after about six months of immigration. The majority have patriotism toward the native country, which make people feel homesick. Immigrants feel homesick because they cannot see their family and friends regularly whenever they want. In addition, a simple, minor disease, such as the common cold, can create a feeling of loneliness and depression for the immigrants. These emotional diseases can be cured by meeting helpful friends or going back to their native home on vacation. For instance, my mother overcame her homesickness by getting along with another Koreans that she met at church and by visiting Korea every once in a while. After that, she felt relieved, and the rest of our family took a load off our minds. From the cultural differences to homesickness, immigration is a difficult process forthe majority. Living another country is needed the understanding of other cultures. Basically, if people understand and concern carefully other cultures, they will adapt well to the country. Immigrants are not the only ones who have to understand differences in cultures; it is a challenge for all in the world of globalization.
12/11/2009English 90Jiyoung KimEthical Controversy- AbortionAn abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo, resulting in or caused by its death. The controversy on abortion has been continued for a long time. In America, abortion is legal and statistics show that about seventy million unborn children were killed by abortion every year in the world. Not only America in, is abortion a sensitive topic. All countries involved in finding a solution to abortion. This solution is to ban abortion. In the concrete, abortion should not be allowed legally judged due to morality and painful consequence for women.First, abortion can be accepted as a murder and unsightly criminal act. One of the basic questions of this controversy is to clear up whether fetus is a human life or not. By definition, the meaning of “alive” is the state of growing, developing, maturing, and replacing its own dying cells, so a fetus is a living thing which satisfies these conditions.Three days after implantation on the uterine wall, an embryo starts to communicate with mother by hormones. Six-week-embryos can feel pain and move its body. If around ten weeks have passed, the embryos have all body structures which are distinguished by the naked eye and can breathe with their respiratory organs. These are truths that were found out by scientists and modern techniques. The general view of scholars regard embryos after two weeks from fertilization as living humans. So, abortion should be illegal as murder.Second reason is related with side effects after having an abortion. Abortion is an unnatural process that interrupts one of the primary functions of the human body. A woman's body naturally resists the abortion and causes physical problems. During the course of a medical abortion, nearly all women experience pain resulting from uterine cramping, bleeding, and often with passage of clots. She may not become pregnant with a child because most people are damaged in the womb and have pain after operation. It also causes psychological shocks. Many of women who have abortion have flashbacks to the experience and nightmares about the baby. They also experience serious depression, and massive feelings of guilt. As a result, they may not live happy life and their health goes from bad to worse. Killing the fetus which has lived in mother’s womb as a part of her, cannot help destroying the women’s health. Also, the woman may experience mental anguish from the fact ending her baby’s life by herself, as well as physical pain. These facts are supported by statistical data. According to the article of Zenit international news agency 55% of those who had abortions reported nightmares and 79% of them reported guilt, with an inability to forgive them. These research materials show the pain caused by abortion is serious. There are people who agree with abortion. They fight as a union or an individual, and they strongly persist in their opinion. They claim that abortion is one of the safest surgical procedures for women. Also the death rate is 6 or 7 per million procedures on average which is about 9 times safer than bearing the fetus to term. This means medical science has already been developed to protect dying from abortion, and the death rate from bearing the fetus is higher than the death rate from abortion. Even though it could look reasonable, people think that there are still some women who suffer problems after abortion. If it is the safest procedure, why many people still disagree with abortion? Also, they refer pregnant teenagers that do not have any ability to keep a baby. If a teenager bears a baby, both mom and baby may start an unhappy life. The mom will not concentrate at her school and will not even go to school. They insist that the teenagers used to give up her baby because of not enough money to support the baby. However, in this case, one of the best ways is prevent the abortion. For example, the sex education for teenagers should be improved and we must practice variety contraceptive measure. Abortion laws have to be amended severely as well. The government must support finances for bringing up and take part in movement against abortion directly. The mass media have an obligation to give a warning to people. In conclusion, abortion should be prohibited in terms of moral question, and women’s pain. Depriving new life of the right to live is a criminal act as well as unethical act, and for people who will experience serious pain, abortion should not be allowed.

What are some of the beneficial effects of international travel on an individual? Those who consider much knowledge in the school the key to success might say that international travel is not necessary. However, I think people can get beneficial effects by doing international travel. There are three reasons: to learn cultural information first-hand, to make a good relationship abroad, and to escape from mundane routine. First, international travel makes people learn other cultures first-hand, and not relyas traveling in Japan by herself, she told me that she was experiencing the most wonderful things. Before she traveled to Japan, she had some prejudices about Japan that she learned in history class. For example, Korea was colony, Koreans do not like Japan, or the Japanese are so cruel. When she went to Japan, she realized she did not know about Japan and she learned first-hand by walking and talking with some Japanese that the Japanese are friendly and the culture of Japan is unique. Moreover, as far as making Moreover, as far as making a good friend is concerned, international travel has a beneficial effect. Although some people might say that people can run into dangerous people such as robbers or highwaymen, people can see that some travelers who have troubles on their trip meet a good helper who later becomes a good friend. For example, Hanbiya, who is Korean, and was walking traveler in wild area such as Africa. When she was traveling, she got lost in Pakistan and she couldn’t find her way to the airport. She was also did not know anyone. I heard she was able to get to the airport safely because one Pakistani resident found her and he took her to the airport since they became friends. After then, Habiya has gone back to visit that village to meet him every year. I think she could make a lot of friends from the international travel not only him. People do not have to get in trouble in another country to make friends but they can
