[Narrative Essay]My First Blind Date

Sang-yoon LeeNovember 25, 2009My First Blind DateFrom 2008’s summer to early 2009, after discharging from military service, I had been remained single, almost one year. Because I’d associated with one person for about 5 years, so I wanted to have free time. However, this resolution didn’t continue for a long time. I felt very lonely, so I really wanted to have a girlfriend, early this year. Since I didn’t want to have a semester without a girlfriend, I decided to have a blind date. Scarcely had I entered my university when I made the girlfriend, therefore, I had no experience of blind dating. From this reason, I expected my first blind date a lot, but that blind date fell short of my expectation. In the very first stage, dinner time, my mental anguish had begun.Because I am a man of Korea, I prepared for the first blind date, very much. I searched good restaurants, nice bars, and so on. I also took a lot of money to spend on a blind date. So I asked her to go an Italian restaurant I’d researched before. This restaurant’s pasta and spaghetti were very delicious. When I asked her to go this restaurant, she was willing to agree with me. We had great time there, in my opinion, but after eating dinner, she said that she ate pasta for dinner yesterday! Why did she say so? Even though I used a lot of money for dinner, my feeling was so bad. Anyway, as I tried to hold in my temper, we moved to the next stage, a café.In the café, when we chose the coffee, among many kinds of coffees, she said she wanted to eat a piece of cake, additionally. I thought that because I paid for dinner, the expensive dinner, she might pay for the coffee and the cake. However, as a Korean man, if she took out her wallet, I would have made stop her paying the cost of coffee and the cake. In time, after finishing the all choices, she never moved her arms. She was just watching me! I was confused a little bit, but I couldn’t help but pay for the cost of coffee and cake. What was worse, she was a kind of silent person, there came a lot of awkward situations while we were talking in this second place. Because it was my first blind date, though I felt bad again, I did best as I could. Therefore, we moved the last stage, a poolroom.In the café, she was told that she had a good posture, when she was doing pools. I also liked to play pools, so we went to the poolroom. She had the good posture, as she said, but she’s playing was not so good. I was confused because we played the pool for money. If I won the game, did she feel angry? Yes, it was my first blind date, so I decided not to win her. I wanted to end this date perfectly. I gave her a handicap, and also, I pretended that I had a poor talent at the pool. At last, she won the game. It means, I paid for this step again! But this time, I felt better than before. After this stage, we said good-bye to each other, and I thought that the end of today’s date was successful. However, when I heard some stories about this date, I really collapsed. When we played the pool, she thought that I was angry, because of the losing the game. Since then, I decided that I would never do a blind date.I have a girlfriend, now. We met naturally, not kinds of blind dates. If I look back at that time, I was really impatient. I should keep my composure. Frankly speaking, my blind dater was not my ideal type. I didn’t see who she was, but I focused on a ‘girl’ friend, only. There is an old saying, “Haste makes waste”. If you want to find your future girlfriend, do not be hurry. Look around, and take time to know your perfect girlfriend. If you do so, she would come to you.

However, even though I love her, I have an image of my Miss Right. It doesn’t mean that we have a trouble. Sometimes we have a talk of our ideal types of girlfriend and boyfriend, neither I nor she is an ideal type. This, we admit, is true. So, from now on I am going to draw my woman after my own heart, comparing with my girlfriend, occasionally.First, I’ll draw a face of woman whom I’ve dreamt of. She has a little long hair which leads to her shoulder. Its color is very black like a night sky of countryside. It should be straight, not the curly of noodles. And she has to have clear eyes. Its color is also the black, but it needs to shine like a star. It doesn’t have a double eyelid. This eye gives me an impression of innocence. In this part, my present girlfriend has this kind of eyes. Anyway, she has a small nose. It doesn’t look so sharp. It shouldn’t be sharp, but be soft as a jelly. Her mouth is also not too big. Its lips are as red as a cherry. At last, the entire type of this face which has these elements is an egg-shaped face. Unlike this, my girlfriend’s face is a little bit square.Second, she has a snug figure. Her body shape is a little bit slim, not too skinny. I want her height about 160 centimeters. Because when I hug her, I want her in my arms entirely. I like the style of a woman wearing skirts, so she has shapely legs. Her arms look like a pipe because the thickness of her arm is almost same, the wrist to the forearm. And she has a slender waist, so her general figure of her entire body is a bottle of Coca-cola.As I mentioned before, my girlfriend’s ideal type is definitely different from me. But as time goes on, we find merits of me and her, so our ideal types have been changed. The Miss Right I drew above is not in existence. If it was, though, It would be hard to find! And the most important thing is a character. My girlfriend has a broad nature like the Pacific Ocean. My girlfriend’s appearance is just different from my ideal type, she is also so beautiful. She is the most perfect woman I’ve ever met, so I’ll love her, forever.

[Compare and contrast] World Series Champion! Yankees!

Sang-yoon LeeNovember 11, 2009The World Series Champs, New York Yankees!One of my favorite sports is a baseball. I like playing baseball, and also watching baseball games. Few days ago, on November 5th, the New York Yankees, one of the major league baseball teams, won the World Series championship. They clinched their 27th World Series by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies by score of 7 to 3. Both teams are very strong, so it took 6 games to end the World Series, but finally, the Yankees won. Are there any reasons that the Yankees defeated the strongest team in National League, the Phillies? Here are answers why the Yankees won the World Series.The Phillies has a powerful lineup of the starting pitcher, like Cliff Lee Who is a left-hander with a Cy Young Award. Pedro Martinez, who has a nick name of an alien, is also famous. And Bradley Lidge, one of relief pitchers of the Phillies, defends the bullpen, effectively. These pitchers in the Phillies are strong, however, pitchers in the Yankees are superior to them, a little bit. From C.C. Sabathia, Andy Pettitte to A.J. Burnett, they are the strongest lineup of starting pitcher in MLB. And there would be no question about this fact that the best relief pitcher in the world is Mariano Rivera, who has got 36 saves just in post-seasons. These pitchers made the Yankees a champion.Then, how about batters? Batters in the Phillies are known as sluggers. Their averages of OPS(On base percentage Plus Slugging percentage) and long hits are higher than every team in MLB. Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, and Chase Utely have a good reputation as a batter. These members’ records in post-season were better than the records of Yankees key players, like Posada or Teixeira or Matsui. Therefore, before the World Series, specialists expected that Phillies’ batting power was somewhat better than that of Yankees’. Yankees’ batters have a delicacy at bat, but because of a slump of key batters during post-season, specialists predicted that the Yankees pitchers would suffer from those sluggers.The best pitchers versus the most powerful batters, can you make decision which one is better? Neither is an answer. The biggest differences between the Yankees and Phillies are the camaraderie and the belief between members. They’ve had 26 champion rings since 1923, except this year. They are a long history team. Though they haven’t had the champion ring since 2000, they believed that they could win the World Series, because they are the strongest team who has 26 rings in MLB. The leader, Derek Jeter, and a star player, Alex Rodriguez, didn’t get on well each other, for a while. However, from time goes on, they believed each other, not only between Jeter and A-Rod, all the members. And some players, like Nick Swisher who ranked in fifth of bigmouth in MLB, created a pleasant atmosphere in a clubhouse. When the World Series began, their spiritual strength was the peak more than ever. Based on these reasons, they trusted each other, and finally, they got the championship. Additionally, the Matsui who had the slump in post season got the MVP, because of the record of 8-for-13 with three homeruns and 8 RBI during the World Series.The Yankees and Phillies are not the teams that I support, but I like the Yankees better than the other. The strong lineup of pitchers, batters who show their talent in need, and the most important thing, the ‘belief’, make me the fan of the Yankees this year. Furthermore, these kinds of sports give me a lot to think of me. I’ve learned much from sports, sort of friendship, trust, cooperation, and so on. From these reasons, I like to watch sport games. I really can’t wait for next season. Anyhow, I’m sorry Chan-ho, Park. You are the best player in MLB for me, but I don’t like the Phillies as much as the Yankees. Good luck all of you!

It was a story of melting iceberg, and showed some effects of this phenomenon. Many scientists believe that it is a result from ‘The Green House Effect’, which is another term for GLOBAL WARMING. So, what is the global warming? Simplifying the meaning of the global warming does not only mean that global temperatures are rising but also atmospheric carbon dioxide is increasing its projected continuation. Why the CO2 is danger is, when the Sun heats the earth, some of this heat escapes back to space, but because of CO2, some of the heat can’t escape the earth, so it makes the earth hot. Some people do not care about the global warming, but it’s really time to think about our Earth. There are several major effects of global warming, especially.One of the important consequences of global warming is the alarming rate at which the polar ice caps and other glaciers are melting, as I mentioned before. The polar ice-cap melting is causing the increasing level of oceans and the changing shore lines on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The loss of many coastal wetlands is inevitable and a great risk of flooding in coastal communities can occur as sea levels rise. There might be no lands to live on.Secondly, as the earth is getting warmer, unpredictable climate change is the most important consequence of global warming. Most scientists believe that the warming of the climate will lead to Hyperlink "http://www.panda.org/resources/publications/climate/xweather/" more extreme weather patterns such as: hurricanes, super-storms, drought and longer spells of dry heat and intense rain. As emissions of greenhouse gases continue to trap more and more of the solar energy which has to be dissipated, it is resulting in a variety of climate change which can turn stronger storms, more intense precipitation and, higher winds. They surely hurt people and cause damage our surroundings.Finally, our friends, the animals, are disappeared. Sea levels rise, because of iceberg melting, and climate changes make the animals can’t live on the earth. The Polar bears I’ve seen in the documentary, ‘a tear of North Pole’, are one good example. Iceberg is melted, they can’t move a lot to hunt their prey. And when they move from a glacier to other one, there are no glaciers to land for taking a break, because lots of glaciers are melted! In course of time, they will be disappeared. Like Polar bears, many animals that live on only specific temperature will be exterminated. Maybe, humans will be the last turn.Global warming, a man-made disaster is mainly caused by greenhouse gases from human activity. Melting iceberg, changing climates, and disappering animals, all of these phenomenos are made by human! These acts of nature cannot be completely solved by human power, however it is possible to slow down the process global warming. We need to figure out the ways to curve the global warming phenomenon. We should make efforts individually in life, and we can act as a life preserver for our planet. We, as a society, must do everything in our power to preserve the delicate balance of nature.

It’s very acceptable situation nowadays, and many queer events are held in many places. Although I’m not a gay and also have no gay friends, I can understand them and accept these situations. And whoever they are or whatever they like, they are the same person like you and me. Their marriages also can be occurred, if the love is existed between them. We just have to respect their opinions and do not blame them. Although some people believe that they are the abnormal people, they are the common people who have a little different characteristic.Many people have a negative view of gay people, but they are the same people like us. When we were in a mother’s womb, we’d been affected by hormones that our mother had. So, if you got a lot of hormones from your mother when you were in the womb, you could have been a person who likes the same gender of yours. It means every people have their own taste. It is just different degrees of hormones. They are not a problem person, but just a little unique.They are the people like us, so they can marry between same genders. Many people feel unpleasant when they see the gay couple, but that’s all! We have no damages from their marriages. They are rather helpful in many fields than harmful to people. Because of the gay people’s characteristics, which have the merits of both men and women, they contribute to fashion, design, and so on, sort of sensitive fields. They have lots of talents, but because of the condition of society, they can’t come out to the light. They just hide their special abilities because of the stereotype of society caused by the majority of people. Therefore, we should respect their thoughts and ideas, and then, we must give them a chance to show their hidden talents.Some people say that they admit the gay couple, but they don’t agree with gay couple’s right to have a baby. They also say that when their children watch those gay couples, it is not good for their children’s education. But why do you think so? Your child can be confused by his or her identity while they are growing up. Teaching that being a gay is a bad thing like a criminal act can give your children more confusion. We should teach our children the right sexual identity. We should respect our children because they are the one person before your daughter or son. In this point, gay couples are better than ordinary couples. The gay couples have the wide view of the sexual identity, at least.A substantial number of people are afraid or hateful of homosexuals. Because many people think they are weird and being uncleanness usually. On the contrary, they are rather very sensitive and delicate. This kind of thought is a stereotype exactly. Because of these stereotypes, homosexuals can’t come out this society. So, I want to recommend some events of homosexual. In Korea, about once or twice a year, ‘Queer Festival’ is held in Jong-no. You can see many gays there and talk with them. Then you’ll learn from them that we are friends and we are equal ‘human’.
