Yun Jeong ChoiEnglish 1026/25/2004The catcher in the eyeCompanies want to target specific people who are going to buy their products. Companies use advertisement to attract consumers. Young women might be interested in fashion because they often want to be the best dressed woman in their specific group. I am also greatly interested in clothing. We all have bought clothing impulsively after seeing an advertisement. Many advertisers think about how to appeal to young women in their late teens to late 20s because young women are sensitive to beauty. In a competitive young women’s clothing market, it is especially important to understand young women’s sensibilities.I chose two advertisements for women’s clothing to analyze; one for the Gap and one for the Ralph Lauren. The Gap advertisement shows three women, approximately late teens to early twenties, at the beach. They are dressed casually but fashionably. The first woman wears an orange and red tank top and khaki casual pants with a can and a blue floral bag. The third woman wears a green and blue tank top and jeans. The third woman also has a bewitching smile on her face. They wear casual bracelets. The bracelets look good against their tanned wrists. There are three women on an excursion to the beach. The weather is sunny and balmy. They get some sand in their clothes and on their bodies, and are deeply tanned. Their wavy, light brown, shoulder-length hair seems to be healthy. Their hair is flapping in the wind. Two women put their hands into their pockets. The three women seem to feel at ease. The Ralph Lauren ad from Vogue shows one woman in her mid-to-late twenties. She leans back comfortably on a pink and white striped chair, with one leg resting on one of the arms, and other resting on the chair casually. She wears a luxurious pink suit, a soft pink silk shirt and a pearl necklace. The pearl necklace looks fine with her luxurious suit. She also wears a belt with large pink polka dots on a black background, and he left side. Her straight, black, pulled back hair has a neat, tidy, modest appearance. The two opposing advertisements target different aged women. Obviously the Gap advertisement is aimed at late teens to early twenties women who wish to be fashionable and active with their friends. Mid-to-late twenties women have more opportunities to go to formal functions because they often go to places for meetings related to work. They might wear more formal clothing for a wedding party, Christmas party, social evening, or other special occasion. My sense of the Ralph Lauren advertisement is that it is targeting women older than teenagers, perhaps college-educated women who wish to appear elegant. The color of both advertisements influences the image. The Gap advertisement uses bright color. Bright color generally gives an energetic, active impression, so the overall image of the Gap advertisement is vivid, fresh, lively, sprightly, and bright. Everything about the Gap advertisement signifies you pink, white and black. Pink usually gives a charming, attractive, feminine impression. Black in fashion gives an elegant, stylish impression. So, the Ralph Lauren advertisement combines comfort and elegance. The Ralph Lauren advertisement has a polished, refined, graceful atmosphere.Regarding camera methods, both advertisements are shown as a close-up shot to increase the intensity of the subjects. However, in the Gap advertisement, the models’ faces are shown directly facing the camera. This represents that models are feeling confident about their clothing. On the contrary, a side view of the model is shown in the Ralph Lauren advertisement. This suggests a lofty, noble quality. Also, both advertisements emphasize the model rather than the background because advertisers want us to focus on the product.Hair style and posing create a different emotional effect. In the Gap advertisement, the models’ hair is wavy, light brown, flapping in the wind. This highlights the health beauty, youttudents who have a desire to keep up with fashion. The model’s hair in the Ralph Lauren ad is straight, black, and pulled back. This suggests tidiness, elegance, and thoughtfulness. The model in this advertisement does not sit upright but leans comfortably. The advertisers chose this pose because this pose appeals to women who want to be comfortable as well as elegant. The woman in this advertisement is possibly a well educated member of a company, who buys clothing to show off status. As we see, two companies appeal to young women using their different approaches. Both advertisements are effective. The Gap ad effectively appeals to teenagers who want to wear comfortable, fashionable, activity clothing, evoking a bright, energetic, and active image. The gap ad uses bright color that gives an energetic, active impression. The Ralph Lauren ad also effectively appeals to mid-to-late 20s women who wish to wear polished, refined, formal clothing, evoking a luxurious, elegant image. The Ralph
Yun Jeong ChoiEnglish 10104/28/2004ADHD and RitalinADHD has affected thousands of families in the world and my family has not escaped the reach of this disorder. Growing up in Korea, my cousin’s attention deficiency started to be apparent when he was in primary school. He could not sit quietly for a minute at home or school. Have you ever imagined just how serious the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) of many children is? More and more children have been diagnosed with the disease each year. I would like to find out which treatment is right for children from doing this project. To search for sources, I used SIRS and Expanded Academic ASAP. I used ADHD and Ritalin as keywords while doing this search. Most parents do not think of children with ADHD affecting their school and social life. They have a tendency to think of a hint of ADHD in their children is just a part of growing up and do not see a need to have it corrected or treated. Negligence may result in serious sidein “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”, the symptoms of attention deficit are as follows: make many careless mistakes; demonstrate a short attention span; do not listen to others when they talk; do not finish homework; have difficulty in planning and performing activities systematically; and forget routines. The symptoms of hyperactivity are as follows: are unable to sit quietly; move around a lot; jump or climb impulsively; cannot take part in quiet activities; do not wait their turn; are excessively talkative; and interrupt others. Most doctors have diagnosed too many children who do not have ADHD as ADHD.In an article entitled “Ritalin update for counselors, teachers, and parents” in Education (Winter 2003), Hazel L. White writes, “many children are inappropriately diagnosed and treated (Nevada Nurses Association [NNA], 2000). There are other conditions that produce similar symptom of ADHD. Anything from chronic fear to mild seizures can make a child seem overactive, quarrelsomrun in families, so there are likely to be genetic influences. Children who have ADHD usually have at least one close relative who also has ADHD” (7).Also, children are susceptible to ADHD as a result of an increase of anxiety caused by such traumatic factors as the breakdown of the family unit. Divorces are becoming common. My friend’s sister, who has experienced a divorce, is likely to sit restlessly, go around the classroom, answer at inappropriate times, speak nonsense, and frequently make careless mistakes. In addition, addictions can be a cause of ADHD. Those who are addicted to computers, television, and video games have something in common. They are restless unless they are either at a computer, television, and video games. Watching TV does not require thinking on part of students. They get used to being entertained so they forget how to think.Unless such children receive proper treatment, they are likely to grow increasingly frustrated and lose their confidence, which is broug. White in “Ritalin update for counselors, teachers, and parents”, “Ritalin is the most frequently prescribed medication for the treatment of individuals who have ADHD” (1). However, when doctors consider a diagnosis of ADHD, most doctors have a tendency to attack the effects, not the causes. Ritalin has been over-prescribed. A drug treatment will not be effective without addressing the family or addiction problems. Ritalin is the simplest solution, requiring only a few pills a day, but should not be thought of as a complete solution. The stimulant Ritalin has side effects such as decreased appetite, loss of weight, hypersensitivity, anxiety, increased blood pressure, and irritability (Hazel L. White, 6). Also, Children have been found to abuse Ritalin. Shankar Vedantam and Matthew P. Blanchard, in their article “A Growing Concern Over Ritalin” in Philadelphia Inquirer (25 Jan. 2001), say, “As use of Ritalin has exploded in the last decade, doctors and drug-control officials say the medse children become dependent on drugs to solve their problems. Many educators say the advantages of Ritalin outweigh the disadvantages. According to the article “A Growing Concern Over Ritalin”, Ritalin when used under a doctor’s supervision is not dangerous. Hazel L. White writes, “Stimulant mediation had consistent positive effects on academic achievement test scores” (8). Ritalin is safe and helps children control their behavior. In other words, Ritalin helps children focus, pay attention and be more successful at school and home. However, without using Ritalin, I believe we can free children from ADHD. First of all, parents should be aware of ADHD’s influence on their children’s school life. Parents can take active measures to treat ADHD at home and through medical clinics. Reasonable ways to help the students can be assisting them with daily routines and a specific daily schedule. Even more importantly, parents should make an effort to control their children’s computer use by limitiity.
