This experiment explores the concepts surrounding viscous flow. The objective of the experiment is to determine the relative roughness of the pipe in question and determine the corrected diameter for this pipe. The data shows that the experimental diameter is not the actual diameter of the pipe; in fact the diameter of the pipe is actually smaller than the given diameter. The pipe diameter is believed to be decreased as a result of long term use and a buildup of corrosion within the pipe. This experiment also studies the effect of relative roughness on the fluid flow. The data within shows that the expected relative roughness and the calculated relative roughness are very different; this also is believed to be an effect of the corrosion within the pipe.IntroductionThe objective of this experiment is to revisit and clarify the concept of fluid flow in pipes, and more specifically viscous flow.
The Two Ways of LifeThe GuestCamus, Albert Camus, The Guest. Norton Anthology, P. 1509-1520This short story begins with depicting the landscape and weather of school where the main character, Daru, lives. Then, the old gendarme and the prisoner, Arab, suddenly visited the schoolhouse. The old gendarme told Daru that take Arab to Tinguit, where the administration and polices are expected to see him. At the end of the story, Daru let Arab to choose his own way. The Arab had two choices; one way was to the Tinguit, and the other way to be free. The Arab finally chose the way to the Tinguit. He could be free, but he wanted to pay for his sin.People always have the choices to face in life. In this short story, the Arab chose the way to the Tinguit, police station. It was tough decision for him since he had to spend rest of his life in prison, but he was willing to pay his sin by confessing it rather than live free with guilty. People have conscience like the Arab, but sometimes they have non on the left, on the other hands, is called Virtue. She recommends him to go the hardest path with her. This piece of art represents the choice of life, so there is a thread of connection between the Guest and the Choice of Hercules. The pleasure leads people to take easy way, but there is nothing after that delight. The virtue shows the hardship, but there is a glory and better outcome than the way pleasure leads. The Arab decided to take the way virtue leads since he does not want to enjoy the freedom with guilty. He must have thought hard to win the battle with himself like people always do in their lives. The Road Not TakenFrost, Robert. Mountain interval, The Road Not Taken. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916. 9. Print. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fairAnd having perhaps the better claim,Because it was gis poem was written by Robert Frost and consisted with four paragraphs. The first paragraph explains the situation; a man walked to the forest and saw the two ways he had to choose. He was thinking which way to go since he could not see the other side of the roads. In the second paragraph, he chose one way which was grassy and wanted wear. He knew he could not travel both ways. So, he was realizing how the way leads on to another way in third paragraph. The fourth paragraph describes the decision of the life. He said that he made a difference in life. This poem describes the choice of the life. He was considering between the two ways. Once he took one way, he has to stick with it. After that, he does not know the result of what he chose. In the fourth paragraph, he heaved a sigh. It could be a sigh of relief or regret, but he made a choice and could not go back. The Arab made a choice to the police station, and he knew he could not come back from his decision. The Arab knew his future wed, dead, and buried. Then, the third day He rose again from the dead. This movie describes the twelve days of hardship for Jesus Christ.Jesus prayed for Himself in the first scene of the movie and said that if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. He did not want to die at the cross, but that was not God’s will. He could do whatever He wants to do, which means He had a choice, but He follows the will of God. He had a mission to rescue mankind by crucifying at the cross. If He chose to live, the mankind is still a slave to sin according to Christian view of this movie. He chose the hard way to pay for men’s sin. As a result, the Guest and the Passion of the Christ connected with this choice. Even though the Arab went to hard way to pay for his own sin, but both of them went to the same way.Choices For Life Hyperlink "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRZHKNHoRfc" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRZHKNHoRfcMcLaughlin, John, Choices For LifeThe right way might be the hardest way and longest way, but that is worth to go through in order to get stronger. Modern Day FriendshipThe world’s population had grown over seven billion. Accordingly, there are so many different kinds of people in the world. Each of them has a different personality, life, and goals. People get along with some particular people and know each other closely, and that is called friend. Friendship is simply the relationship between friends, and it is a very personal and unique. The friendship trend, however, changes according to the times, and the society shows similar trend throughout the world. The short story of Higuich Ichiyo “Separate Ways” shows friendship between two protagonists. This story well reflects the friendship trend of modern day.In modern life, most of people are having a hectic time and working too hard to get a living. They become more self-centered spending a lot of time thinking about how they can get a better life. The relationship between people is not what it used to be. In order generations, people were living in the same territory for a long ss one. The part of this affluence made people to lose their ability to share and trust. This trend of world changes the relationship and also the friendship between people. With the globalization, nowadays people can leave anytime and anywhere they want in order to get a better life. After that, in their busy daily life, they forget easily the people who were with them.In Separate Ways, two main characters are appeared: Okyo and Kichizo. Okyo, a seamstress in her early twenties, and Kichizo, an apprentice boy at the umbrella shop, are seems to have intimate friendship when they work in the same neighborhood. When Kichizo visited Okyo at late night, she was willing to give rice cake to him and promised to make a good kimono for him. They cared and worried about each other, Kichizo even wanted to believe that she is his sister. Then, being tired of all of washing and sewing, Okyo suddenly decided to move from the neighborhood to her relative’s house so that she can move on to a better lcould have stayed with him, but the life is about her not him or others. For this reason, the short story represents the friendship of modern day.The other reason is about the purpose of the friendship. Most of the purpose of friendship in modern day is utility and pleasure. The Reisman’s study reveals about the consideration in determining one’s choice and maintenance of friends. He also introduced the Aristotle’s classification stating “Aristotle described three purposes friendships might serve: utility, people choose friends who will be useful: pleasure, which Aristotle supposed would be common among the young, where friends are selected for amusement and play; and virtue, in which the friends admire and respect one another” (913). Aristotle also said the last type of friendship, virtue, is the most perfect and mature. Nowadays, however, there has been a decline in general deference in society, which means respect for others is fading away. People build a relationship by sharing thereabouts, but he met Okyo who takes care of him. He was persistingly left by someone whom he likes, Granny at the umbrella shop and Kinu at the dyer’s shop. It must be hard for him to understand about Okyo’s leaving since he left alone again. He considered her as his family, but it turns out she was just one of his friends who can leave him. Okyo was very friendly to all people, especially to the member of the umbrella shop because her landlord was the owner of the shop. She wanted people to come and visit her since she gets lonely living by herself. She invited Kichizo to hit the fulling block with mallet to take out his anger, and also helping her. This is their utility purpose of the friendship. Soon they became friends and found pleasure to each other. Okyo thinks him as a friend who can share their minds and talk about their job, but she could not admire him because he refused to be success rather than stay where he is while she waited for good luck to come. They could not share tntain their relationship, just like most of the modern society friendship. This short story make people think about the friendship and realize how complicated relationship we make in this world. Many people experiences the situation like Kichizo and Okyo, promising the better job opportunities verses inconvenience of moving away and leaving their friends. This kind of friendship seems to be in bad relationship, but that is reality. Not every friend is like them, some people are in the dilemma. In the story, Okyo also think Kichizo as her closest friend saying that he is her little brother, but that could not change her decision. Eventually, she left Kichizo to lead her own life. The ending makes people think what will happen in the future of the story. Two of them could meet again and be friends forever, or they cherish their memories and go their separate ways like the name of the story. This modern day of friendship trend will probably continue in the future unless people seek to bett014.
The main objective of this experiment is to understand and revisit the flow of liquid in a pipe and determine the true diameter of a pipe since it affects the flow hugely. The true diameter is the current diameter of the pipe that will be calculated using the data that we collected from the experiment. This diameter is different than the diameter that is provided by the manufacturer. Since the fluid that is flowing brings some particles, we expect to have smaller diameter after the analysis is done. The buildup of these particles also creates rust and corrosion in the pipe, which affects the relative roughness by increasing the drag of the fluid. After the analysis is done, we have found that the true diameter of the pipe is smaller than the manufacturer’s specification as expected. We recommend cleaning pipes that are in use will bring higher flow rate by reducing the drag in the pipes.
The main objective of this experiment is to recapture stress, strain and fully understand the relationship between them under the elastic zone of the materials using Hook’s law and use stress transformation equations when a load is applied in arbitrary direction. The other motivation is to verify the measured value of the strain and stress using transformation equations that are found by geometric manipulation. To accomplish these tasks we will load a structure with a constant load at a measured or specific location from the fixed point and measure the strain that it produces. Since most materials fail under 3500μ strain, the conventional measuring devices like scales that have low resolution (i.e. it can only measure 1/32 of an inch within 1/64) will not be used to measure the change in length. So to achieve this task we will be using strain gages that have high resolution and are able to measure small change in length up to ± 1μm.
