Lady or tigerA man had to choose between opening one of two doors. In one, there was a lady who the princess hated and in the other, a tiger that was waiting for the man. The man was worried. Finally, the man opened one door to find the hungry tiger waiting for him. The man was confused. He thought that if he opened the door which princess told him to open, there would be a lady. However, there was something about the princess that the man didn’t know.First, the princess hated the lady who behind one of the doors. This fact is well known because Stockton wrote, “how in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth and torn her hair.” We can see that the princess extremely disliked the lady. Therefore the princess would not like to see the man marry the woman who was behind the door.Secondly, the character of the princess was strange because of the influence of her surroundings. Seeing the hatred that the princess had for the lady behind the door, it seems that she inherited her the character of her father, the king. Even if the princess had been kind and good-natured in her youth, seeing her father’s actions must have tainted her character. Therefore, the princess probably became crazy in her inner mind. The author said that king was barbaric, and the author did not seem to be sure about the integrity of the princess’s character. Taking into account the stated factors, it is likely that the princess’s character was strange.Thirdly, in the period background, in the first part of the reading, the author said that the kingdom existed “in the very old time,” probably several thousands of years ago. In the case that this event occurred in very old times, this was a time when most people believed there was world that existed after one’s death. If the man married the lady who was behind the door, the man’s feeling and the princess’s feeling must be very painful. It seems reasonable that the princess would select the tiger rather than lady, because even if the man had to be killed, the princess believed that at least in this case, the man’s and her soul could meet together in another world. One doesn’t know what came out the door, the tiger or the lady. However, combining the above-discussed factors, it is certain that the princess told the man the door where the tiger was located. In the described situation, the man couldn’t live with princess whichever door he chose. If this story was a movie, some fantastic ending could be possible, such as the man killing both the tiger and the king, and living with the princess happily ever after, but in reality, that kind of a story is not possible. The princess had to make a difficult decision, and the result of her choice was the tiger.
