How does the structure enhance or produce the meaning of the poem? There are indeed many appreciations to be praised in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight such as chivalric idea, beautifully ornamented language that the poet renders, supernatural factors, and so on. However, above all the prized elements embedded in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the core role of the structure of the poem is indubitably significant. “No one who reads Sir Gawain and the Green Knight fails to notice its elaborate, symmetrical structure. Everywhere in the poem are balance, contrast, and antithesis.”(1) There are significant formal aspects and symbolic features in relation to the Gawain - poet’s craftsmanship which comprises the structure of this poem. All the intricately interrelated parallels which form the symmetric structure of the poem signify the formal aspect of the poem. Moreover, symbolth Gawain’s perfection, holy knightly virtue and pride, the poem ends with Gawain admitting his imperfectness. Hence, the symbols introduced in this poem communicates vis a vis the symmetric scenes in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Two armoring scenes of Gawain fully answer the two contrasting symbols – the pentangle and the girdle. The first armoring scene which takes place when Gawain is leaving Arthur’s castle is decorated in a tone which renders Gawain’s pride and his perfection through his shield – the pentangle. The pentangle represents the “trauthe,” or the truth which embraces fidelity, integrity, and perfection. Since the pentangle symbolize ‘the endless knot’, it suggests all directly linked virtues which hold up together for the pursuit of perfection. Gawain becomes gay and courageous after wearing this shield and goes through all the hardships in his vile journey. However, the parallel scene which takes place when Gawain is leaving the Green Chapel is rendered in a rather ntains omniscient view and able to control Gawain’s destiny, he indulgently, or rather playfully condones Gawain and gives the girdle back. The two reactions of the court and Gawain correspondingly portray the change of Gawain and the court people– their maturing, if not, just acceptance and realization. The reaction of the court when Gawain leaves Arthur’s castle to find the Green Knight for their covenant, renders sorrowful atmosphere. Yet, since Gawain is considered as being the best knight of all, Gawain and the court people still keep certain pride in Gawain’s departure – believing that he will succeed in his journey. The apparent failure of courage of other knights enhances Gawain’s chivalry nature, where everybody looks upon him as perfected human. Hence, the court people at the table are not impervious to his failure while the Gawain - poet warns the dooming future Gawain’s will face. Gawain is also full of pride and doesn’t question his ability and holds up the pentangle shields created by the Gawain - poet, or human, exercises the priestly function and performs the role of the god by indulgently forgiving Gawain’s fault. These contrasting factors delineate the maturing of Gawain - realizing and understanding his human nature by accepting the girdle. If the first confession is perform with his self ratification and yet full of pride, the latter one renders his total acceptance of human natureThe Gawain - poet’s elaborations of his structural and symbolic design as well as his way of speaking also skillfully reflect his attempt to render ‘perfection’ through his work of art. All the cyclical symbols and symmetrical structure allow the poet’s omniscient view of the whole story. Gawain, who is introduced as a perfect knight, even fails to see the parallels and his destiny to come. This perfect knight shows flaws since he exemplifies the linear image – or the human nature. However, the Gawain - poet sees everything and even warns Gawain of his dooming destiny, bwain abandons it by accepting the girdle. This demonstrates the human’s lack of power to be perfect, and human is already fallen after the sin committed by Adam and Eve. Therefore Gawain culminates his supposedly perfect feature and accepting the girdle calmly in memoir of his mistake as well as his imperfectness.Apart from the pentangle and the girdle, the Green Knight who the Gawain - poet created is indeed significant as well in understanding his attempt to attain the perfect feature. The Green Knight is able to talk headless, which means that he is the supernatural character. He also sees Gawain’s future from the start, and teases Gawain with all the corresponding hunting and bedroom scenes – which gives him cyclical power. He later even absolves Gawain from his sin, taking over the prerogative role of the god. The Gawain - poet’s attempt to create such character that is able to perform apocalyptic role and possess godly feature renders his desire to achieve eternity through art. P2
