Frankly speaking, I was not that familiar with UNESCO at least two years ago. Looking back then, it is such a shame that I did not have any clue for what UNESCO had done so far and what it has sought for. The first time when I took UNESCO seriously in my life was when I noticed the term "ESD(Education for Sustainable Development)". By devoting myself in teaching students at school, I have been surprised all the time whenever I find my students unaware of what is happening around the world.

Hanyang Univ. English Education2006030517 Kwon YujinWhat does Pride and Prejudice stand for as a title? As a title of the book usually carries the implication of the overall story, Pride and Prejudice is no exception. Through the story, two general human emotions, pride and prejudice are pervasive among main characters. People unconsciously have those feelings, which happen very naturally. Following the stream of the story, readers can see how the main characters bear those emotions and how they go through in the story. Readers can easily sympathize with the characters because they have undergone those emotions at least once in their life.It is said that the female protagonist, Elizabeth, stands for prejudice and the male protagonist, Darcy, acts for pride, or vice versa. From my perspective, however, I would not say that certain character represents either pride or prejudice. That point of view can be one way of many viewpoints. It seems to me that lots of the characters reflect both pride and prejudice while the story goes on.As for those two emotions, pride mainly comes from one’s excessive self-satisfaction on certain point of oneself. Being contented with oneself is good for self-esteem, but it would have a negative influence on social relationship if the person falls into self-conceit. One’s self-conceit makes others feel uncomfortable with him/her. In other words, it keeps others from being closer with him/her and vice versa. As an example, Darcy is fully satisfied with his family background and social class. Through his attitude and behavior, his pride gives off involuntarily to people in the village of Longbourn, which results in their no preference toward him. In the case of Mrs. Bennet, her pride is all about the beauty or charming of her five daughters. Her pride makes her believe that there is no candidate for bride of rich men in Longbourn. This results in her astonishment and shock when she receives the news of Charlotte’s marriage to Colins. After the news, needless to say, she gives the cold shoulder to Charlotte and Mrs. Locas. The other one, prejudice, happens when the person sets his/her own standards and sticks to those standards toward others. As the professional term, the labeling theory, proves the huge effect of prejudice to others, one’s prejudice blocks the understanding and accepts to others. As Elizabeth’s prejudice to Darcy makes her blind to his genuine affection toward her, one’s prejudice can be a barrier in the interaction with others. In the case of Colins, he thinks one’s wealth is everything about one’s nobility and civil character, he could not see the other side of the rich which comes with the lack of morality. Based on his prejudice, Colins’s entire submission to Lade Catherine is described ridicule, which makes readers laugh at him and pity him.As the story goes on, I can see most of the characters experience these two emotions, pride and prejudice, in their way. In the case of Elizabeth and Darcy, it might seem to be a main part of the story, but that’s not the point. From my standpoint, the writer seems to try telling us that how naturally those two emotions come from and bring with certain consequences. People could not be free from those two emotions in their life. What’s important is that they should know the danger of those emotions and how to balance their emotions not to be extreme in their relationship with others. As humans are social animals, they are sensitive to each other’s emotions. That’s why humans’ emotion could play an important role in their interaction with others.

*Describe the role of interaction in the classroom and suggest your idea to maximize student-student interaction in the classroom. In the past, language teaching was principally teacher-centered. The role of teacher was usually described as a director of classroom. By presenting grammatical items and reading aloud sentences, teachers tried to deliver their language knowledge to students. Through classroom teaching, students were supposed to be passive by memorizing what teachers teach and imitating what teachers model. Unfortunately, there was no room for students` autonomous language learning. As the main stream of language learning theory has focused on learners` communicative ability, however, classroom language teaching has subsequently changed since 1980s. The role of interaction is regarded essential in the language acquisition. As a result, teacher`s job is to facilitate students` interaction with other students.

We find ourselves surrounded by various advertisements every day. It is not too much to say that we live in the world of advertisements. From things for everyday life to luxury goods, all choice we make when we buy things is subconsciously influenced by imprints of advertisements we have. Depending on how deep and sharp impression the advertisement gives us, our frequency of purchase for goods could be different. Under this power of advertisements, we can get advantages in the dimension of three parts. To begin with, we can get information of things on market through advertisements. This is very helpful for us as all of us are in the position of consumers. Through advertisements, we can see the feature and function of products,

With the advances in technology, we start off our day by checking international news or sending e-mails beyond our borders. It seems our understanding of other cultures is getting deepened as we are exposed to various cultures. However, there is always an intercultural misunderstanding based on different cultural patterns. Cultural patterns mainly include values and communication styles. Several tips of Korean cultural patterns can help foreigners to adjust themselves in Korea. In the first place, Korean places an emphasis on collectivism. Korean considers the benefits of majority as the most important. They are likely to follow the majority opinions. For example, when Korean people choose where to have a lunch, they do not show their preferences but wait for others to suggest ideas. After one person makes a suggestion, others would follow the suggestion even though they do not like that much. This is a common case of Koreans when they are asked what to eat or what to do, they usually say “I have no preference.” The other case of collectivism is presented by the use of “Us”. Korean usually add an adjective “Ours” before a noun such as our home, our car, our family or our country.Secondly, Korean’s communication styles are indirect. Koreans do not state their opinions in a direct way. They think the direct communication style sounds impolite and unfriendly. Instead of giving their opinions with “yes” or “no”, Korean tends to make excuses to deliver their opinions indirectly. Besides, there is a special term called “Nun-chi”. By definition, “Nun-chi” refers to the subtle art of listening and gauging another's mood. As Koreans do not give their opinions explicitly and do not show their feelings in front of others, listeners need to guess other’s intended message or hidden feelings in the context. With the knowledge of cultural patterns, we can reduce conflicts and mutual misunderstanding between people. Even though we are affected by international mass media, an individual has his/her own cultural background which influences greatly on his/her communication and perception. As the world becomes globalized, what we need is the deep understanding of different cultural backgrounds to minimize the intercultural misunderstanding which might be the cause of insecurity.
