As a nonsmoker, it is hard to stand it when people smoke as they walk down the street. Yesterday, I had the same experience while walking to a subway station. It was not only I who frowned because of it. Smoking on the streets makes people feel bad. It is like “One man smokes and another gets hurt.” Therefore, I think that smoking on the streets should be banned. There are three reasons for why I think so.Firstly, smoking on the streets is one of the primary sources of secondhand smoke, and it is definite that being a secondhand smoker is basically not good for my health. Moreover, secondhand smoke is more injurious than smoking firsthand. According to Division of Periodontology in University of Minnesota, secondhand smoke contains over 4000 chemicals including more than 40 cancer causing agents and 200 known poisons. In addition, secondhand smoke contains twice as much tar and nicotine per unit volume as does smoke inhaled from a cigarette. Thus, I am quite sure that nobody wants to be a secondhand smoker.Secondly, we cannot anticipate when or where we will be affected by people who smoke on the streets. For example, we could compare instances between ‘going to a pub’ and ‘walking down the street.’ When we go to a pub, we expect that we would meet some people smoking. It is because we know that pubs allow people to smoke. On the other hand, in many countries such as Singapore, we do not always expect that we would meet some people smoking on the street. The streets are not for smoking but for walking or driving to a destination.Lastly, there are an insufficient number of trashcans on the streets, and smokers do not carry an ashtray all the time. Therefore, people who smoke on the street are likely to drop ashes and toss cigarette butts on the road. The ashes are going to move about with winds. Then, they could become stuck to other people’s clothing and make the clothes’ owners feel angry. Cigarette butts are everywhere, and many street cleaners have to clean them up.These three reasons are why I insist that we should ban smoking on the streets. First, smoking on the street causes easily secondhand smoke to other people. Second, we do not always expect to inhale smoke from cigarettes on the streets. Third, smokers who are smoking on the streets usually litter the roads with ash and butts. It makes the streets dirty. Therefore, if we ban smoking on the streets, we can walk on clean streets and do not have to worry about secondhand smoke.
