Some English Proverbs몇몇 영국속담들All over the world, in all countries, we find short, wise sayings that are uesd by ordinary men and woman, sayings that have been handed down from one generation to another. Some of these sayings are calles ‘proverbs’, and a proverb has been defind as ‘the wisdom of many and the wit of one’.전 세계 국가들, 우리는 짧고, 보통 남녀들이 사용하는 현명한 속담들이 한 세대에서 다른 세대로 전해진다. 이런 말들을 ‘속담’이라고 말하고 속담은 많은 지혜와 재치로 정의 내려진다.It is interesting and amusing to study a nation's proverbs. They tell us much about the habits and customs of the people who use them. We must remember, however, that proverbs are often in the kind of language used a long time ago. No language remains the same from one century to another. A language, unless it is a dead language like classical Greek, is always changing. That in why, in many English proverbs, there are words that are used with a meaning different from the modern meaning. In English proverbs we find many examples of words that have changed their meaning.국가. 그러나 속담은 가끔 오래된 언어를 사용한다. 언어는 다음 세대에도 동일하게 유지되지 않는다. 만약 죽은 언어 같은 고전 라틴어나 고전 그리스어가 아니라면 언제나 바뀐다. 그 이유는, 많은 영국속담에 단어들의 의미가 현대의 의미와는 다른 의미로 사용되고 있는 이유이다. 영국속담에서 우리는 많은 의미가 바뀐 예들을 찾을 수 있다.One afternoon Mary West went to a shop to buy some oranges. “I'm sorry,” said the greengrocer, “but, all the best oranges have gone. The word meat today means the flesh of animals used as foare eaten in most countries. But at one time meat had a much wider meaning; it meant food of any kind. If so, you should remember the proverb ‘A stitch in time saves nine.’ If the torn place, or the hole, is mended at once, the work will not take long, and will need little effort. If you do not do the necessary repairs at once, the torn place will get wores, or the hole will get larger. It will take you a much longer time to repair it. It is always better to do these things at once. If someone asks you to lend him fifty pounds and promises to pay back the money in three months’ time, you do not lend it to him until you feel sure that the man will be able to repay you, and that he is honest.
