11/30/11What They Fought ForThe book ‘What They Fought For 1861-1865 by James M. McPherson’ contains the letters and diaries of nearly one thousand Union and Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. The letters and diaries they wrote show perspectives of what the soldiers of the Civil War fought for and explain why and what motivated these soldiers to volunteer and to risk their lives for what they believed was right. The first chapter of this book contains letters and diaries of Confederate soldiers while second chapter that of Union soldiers. These letters and dairies give me best answers of reasons and motivations they choose to fight in the Civil war.According to the book the confederacy was their country to Confederate soldiers. They did choose to fight for liberty and independence of their own nation and people this is reflected in the diary by the captain in 4th Alabama “I am willing to fall for the cause of Liberty and Independence,” and in a Missouri lieutenant’s diary “fighting gloriously for the undying principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government”. A young Confederate infantry wrote “We are fighting for our liberty, against tyrants of the North who are determined to destroy slavery” his idea supports that they also fighting for to preserve slavery. They believed that without slavery the South could not exist as it had. The defense of home land is one of the most powerful motivations to Confederate soldiers, evidence from a statement by Illinois sergeant “fighting to keep an enemy of [their] own neighborhood and protect [their] property”. The patriotism is another great motive to Confederates. The book stated “Of 374 Confederate soldiers whose letters and diaries I have read, two-thirds expressed patriotic motives”. The author summarized “Confederate fought for independence, for their property and way of life, for their very survival as a nation. The reason for North fought for the war is noted in the second chapter of the book northern soldiers’ wartime letters and diaries. In a letter from Missourian enlisted man to his parents “We fight for the blessings bought by the blood and treasure of our Fathers”. The main purpose for Union soldiers was the desire to preserve the United States as a unified republic and to prevent its dissolution by the rebels. Many Union soldiers believed that they were fighting to preserve the republic that their ancestors had built. One Minnesota sergeant wrote “My grandfather fought and risked his life to bequeath to his posterity…the glorious Institutions” now threatened by “this infernal rebellion.” Northern soldiers were almost racist as Southern soldiers so slavery was not a big issue to them in first year of the war but after Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation, which officially freed slaves that were being held in Confederate controlled areas, slavery became more of an issue for many Union soldiers, slavery became more than an issue. One private from New York expressed “Thank God the contest is now between slavery and freedom, every honest man knows what he is fighting for”. In some ways, the reasons given for fighting by the Union and Confederate soldiers were similar. The both sides believed that they were fighting to preserve the heritage and ideals of those who fought in the Revolutionary War.In conclusion, I had very hard time to understand this book because of difficult vocabulary and grammar construction. I read the book three times to fully understand what author was trying to say. Before I started to write this paper I believed that the primary cause of American Civil War was those on the Southern side to preserve slavery and those on the Northern side to end slavery. But this was much more complex than what I believed in. In the book, Soldiers’ letters and diaries contain much evidence of what they fought for. I really impressed this book now I realized the most important reasons of all that the Confederate soldiers fought were for the ideas of liberty and independence. By contrast, slavery was not the primary reason that the Union fought the war. They were fighting to preserve the Union and their republican form of government.
