Essay #2 (Describe)Consideration about what I want to be in the futureconsidering my real hero- introducing a character from a movie who I think interesting -Submitted by Yeji KohD#10439124For English Comp 1 W/LabMWF 2pmInstructor Ms, BeverlyDue date ’14.10.11 FriFollowing the wind, short hair flaps. Big brown eyes slowly show the twinkle concled under long lashes. When he opens his eyes, his face is filled with curioustiy for world. He streched his strongly grabed hands toward sky. At that moment, a streak of light peeps out through the clouds. His blond hair is glistening like his eyes. Every creature in his land see the moment that little brave king gets blessed from sky, and lower their head to show their whole respect. This baby who received worship from everycitizen at the first birth day is my favorite lion, Simba.Last weekend, I watched the movie, Lion King, again. Simba was still cute. However, I also think that Simba looks nothing like other characters made by Disney. Like thws the pride world is his kingdom. So he never afraid of anything. Little lion always looks shiny as much as his golden fur because of his confidence. But the problem was that it was not the bravery from his inside. Therefore, the young prince acted lashly. Of course, it was natural for a child. Actually it can be compared with everyone’s childhood being innocent without fear. Like me, who thought herself to be a great person like king, he acts fearlessly and gets into troubles. Sometimes, pains and obstacles are too huge to endure alone. So some choose to avoid and run away from terrible reality. The death of his hero, father Mufasa, caused him to escape from everything. He let the pride world go. This is the most interesting parts of this movie. When other heros meet adversity, though they also feel frustrated but through several ways, mainly stimulus from their lovers, they get new energy and struggle with the problem. As we know, finally, they succeed to overcome every concern. Unli any thought, this movie was a battle of Simba and Scar. However, the core point is conflict between the pride land life and Hakunamatata jungle. The wide green glassland represents reality. On the other hand, colorful, peaceful and isolated (the jungle is ideal place. Hakunamatata world is a land of milk and honey where everyone dreams to go always. There are no worries, nerves, shortage, bad memories from past, fear for future and responsibilities for everything. The place provides cut off from past remained in real society. In my case, America is almost Hakunamatata jungle. Frankly, exchange student program is a challenge for me, but at the same time, it is also a delay from thinking future. In South Korea, now is the time for me to make a decision among those three ways; going to graduate school, getting a job or being idle. There are many duties come from my past and future. And society wants me to get perfect grade, earn money, work for whole day and give up others that I am interfor my parents and homecountry university, I take money not rich but also enough to live without working. Collaboration of those factors means real free time. During 2 months in U.S, I did a lot of things non-related with my major and future. I spent my time on drawing, learning how to play guitar, watching many movies, taking trips, standing whole day at meuseum, taking part in festival, going to gym, sleeping, watching very colorful sky and changing cloud shapes and so on.Now, I feel totally satisfied to be in U.S. I really don’t want to go back to Korea. If I can get some money for whole my life without any burden about my parents, I would be remained all my life as a student. The time after I graduate is really horrible in my imagination because I live perfect happy life here. No matter what I feel now, time goes fast. I am going to come back my pride land. It is why I am so proud of Simba. If I describe the figure of heroes, it will be like this; A hero feels nervous. On his or herce. Believing that the choice is meaningful and valuable for not now but future makes hero strong enough never to lose.I think Simba is a real hero at that instant when he chooses to sacrifice his comfortable and ideal life to do right things. He left the jungle. Then, he had to face his fault and glommy past again and accept his farther’s death to come back to pride land. It requires a large amount of real bravery to Simba.I can’t sympathize his feeling now, but rather, I yearn for his bravey. And I hope I will be like Simba. During I spend my one year in here, I want to get the courage to go to South Korea with confidence of myself. I hope I will be a master to treat conflict situations without anger. I hope I will be familiar with unfamiliar things. I hope I will fully aware of a word; Life. I hope I take my answer about how to live. I hope I will have my value words which I will never give up even if tomorrow does not come. Because I saw Simba who is more happier in pride land than

South Korea is world-famous country for high-quality of 4G internet speed. Because people and company culture in Korea consider fast speed more important than anything. Reader Response Log #2Once More to the LakeE. B. WhiteSubmit By Yeji Koh / D#10439124For English Comp1 W/Lab (MWF 2pm)Instructor Ms. BerverlyDue date Sep, 29, 2014Objective CommentsE.B. White is a famous writer. I read his book before; Charlotte’s Web in South Korea. That book’s description very impressed me. The motion of the swing was expressed very well through rhythm of sentences so it makes reader feel like seeing the scene directly. It is also same with this essay. He draws a lake in Maine through variety words and emotional touch. Reader can imagine the lake; a peaceful, secluded and beautiful landscape. He invites readers to the lake where he had a journey with his son. Not only with his son, also White had been the lake before several times with his father. Destination of those trip was almost not changed for a long time. As a result, lake became a connection medium of past and present. On the time of writing, he was a farther. However, he often lost his position, he projected his sprit upon his son’s eye because of the same place, same atmosphere. As a result, during the trip, he felt back to the childhood. He described the lake as an unchangeable, clear and comfortable nest, even though the time when he lived passed through a lot of advancement of technology. He had suffered every big events in modern society; World War, great economic expansion and depression, social revolution like those. Therefore White and audience crossed time’s path. Recognizing the changed conditions of this time told us everything must change following the time. At the end of the story, the thinking about time goes further into dying like authors’ farther and himself.Subjective CommentsDuring reading this essay, I thought my heaven. My resting place for mental is countryside far from Seoul, in South Korea. I don’t have any children, even not married yet, my heaven have shown me the change always. When I was child, my family had to take an uncomfortable and long road to arrive there. However, the big and direct road was formed someday. After the road built, everything, surrounded my heaven, has been changed. Those changes will be continued. If I go to my heaven with my child, I would feel the futility of life.Anyway, I think every person has the place like the lake as their heaven. Each one’s heaven also is the calm, beautiful place. Especially those heaven are the center of the nature separated from modernized and civilized things. White touched remaining place in all person’s mind. Because human has the lake for themselves, we can sympathy his feeling.Often we forget the precious of family, friends and time. Day by day, the busy, tight life style and nagging stimulus make us buried in the impulse without thanks or happiness. As we can see from the essay, we are dying and living the limited time. That time is too short to express love and represent gratitude for everything. This essay provides audiences real homesick, chance to think about parents and children by showing soft, lyrical description. Therefore, I think it is appropriate for older people, almost the same generations of the writer at that time.
Essay #4 (Process)Helpful strategies to get high score with small input- Steps when we study for an exam -Submitted by Yeji KohD#10439124For English Comp 1 W/LabMWF 2pmInstructor Ms, BeverlyDue date ’14.11.12 WedIntroductionBefore 10 days, one man saw red star on calendar than said “should study.” Before 3 days, finally, he put textbook on the desk than said “should study” However, as you know, the cover is opened before 24hr from the exam. Even though he feels nervous about exam score, he still has a problem to concentrate on studying. Not only him, it is very common process of you and me.In my case, I wake up early. I drop coffee or tea because of my habit composed in high school and university. At the first time, I just hated to be at the same place. Café is an easy place to find and use. Now it became one of my habit. To make my room like café, I open tabs from such as youtube or other music site. This ritual, choosing songs, is acted very carefully. Sometimes, I hear new ages or cplaying Korean pop. On the other hand, when I study in Korean, I play American pop. After preparation, I start studying. Within 1 hour, my concentration is disturbed. Things which makes me stop studying, are almost the same with yours such as cleaning messy desk, visiting facebook, watching TV and so on. Repeating this process, I study shorter and spend more time doing other things, just remaining tight time to cover up all contents with insufficient memory. At that time, always I decide to stay overnight for exam. And after looking over all chapter, I fall asleep.InterviewI know more than 80% students feel and almost do the same with me. Interestingly, some of this lazy people start study late and get especially good grades. What difference conditions of studying make these big differences between similar lazy students? I picked two students; Song and Jessy. Even, I can guarantee both are lazy people. Then, what is different?First interviewer is Song. He is my boyfriend. And there is he has paid attention to class. When he starts reviewing, he can recall the classes and points. Also, he has noted something new and important things only. He says those notes are very helpful for him. In additions, he summarizes contents more simply by using photo or graph, diagram and so on. It is an easy and convenient way to understand and memorize. Even, sometimes, he makes up words into story to remember easily.Second interviewer is Jessy. She is my roommate. I have always watched movie with her or played guitar with her or went outside with her. Therefore, I can make sure she also put off studying much. Actually, in her case, she has to study twice. At first time, studying is in Portuguese, and second time is in English like me. I know it takes more time than just studying in Korean or Portuguese. Nevertheless, she always comes back to our room with a good grade from her nurse major. Strategic of Jessy is very interesting. It feels like she has very significantly special secretsat maximum. She shows some paradox for studying time. She says her best time to study is at night because of calmness and peaceful atmosphere. However, whenever she starts to study, her hears various kinds of noisy songs. During listening music, she notes important topics. She marks highlight parts by using colorful pens. At the last time, she reads her notes and books again and again.Conclusion.Now, I think good grades depend on how much you concentrate. Especially, lazy people should use their time efficiently. It means they should reduce the time to understand. Listening carefully in the class is very useful at this point. During understanding stage, people who get good grades reorganize texts simultaneously during listening. Using graphs, photos, diagrams and so on which can summarize contents, is a good way. After reading step – I mean making mind-book or note containing summarized pictures step – they should highlight their ones. Judging by what is important or not, based on undeuestions at the end of chapter on textbook is a very good way to confirm and back up their studying.Listening music depends on person. Logically, music is not helpful to concentrate. However, following students around me, playing music makes them refresh. Because of boring subjects, they always want to stop studying. In this case, choosing proper songs to pull up their study atmosphere sounds not bad.Another thing up to you is snacks. Small amount of snacks delivers energy source, glucose, to your brain and it will help you to think well in biological view. At the same time, some foods and heavy snacks can lead you to go to bed and fall asleep. In my retrospect, my friends and I ate for a long time and went to eat quite often. Because during meal time, nobody could touch us. I think it is a big reason every high school students gain huge weight. Please choose your snack and snack time carefully.Anyway, choosing and finding fit strategy with you makes you rest time. Also, it will be a by.
Essay #3 (Exemplification)Positive things in America with view of Stranger- Positive characteristics of Americans -Submitted by Yeji KohD#10439124For English Comp 1 W/LabMWF 2pmInstructor Ms, BeverlyDue date ’14.10.24 FriWhen we talked about this subject in class, my classmates told just negative characteristics of Americans; greed, mammonism caused by capitalism and so on. I thought those are really common aspects from all around world including South Korea, not only of America. However, I can understand that it is difficult to find something good and specific characters of where you are belonged to. I don’t have any idea about positive characteristics of Korea. Therefore at this paper I will show you my observation about positive things in America with the view of stranger. And I hope some visitors in Korea teach me positive characteristic of Korea too.I learned that the major and big difference between Korea and America is indifference. Korean culture is well developed in sharing and interfering with others. So, I easily understand this point and anticipate isolated life before arriving here. However, the indifference that I experienced is different with my concept. Almost Americans also have interest to another people and culture. Furthermore, Americans do not hesitate to express what they feel and think. To give more information or details about this point, every Americans have a big heart to make positive evaluate. For examples, one of my items which is very hot here is my glasses. For three days after I arrived at Philadelphia, I heard good comments about mine more than five times on the street. I used my glasses for a long time in Korea but I have heard those complements only from my few friends. Korean culture does not allow people to express their good impression to others, especially strangers, America culture, on the other hand, allow people to chat with new people through exchanging favorable reviews about their own items. As a result, nowadays, I make an effort to find unique review from the front everywhere.Without specific purpose to make good impression, a lot of people in here use positive words to improve, challenge and so on. I know my English is not good now. It is one of the reason why I am here. Anyway, when I made some mistake caused by misunderstanding or feel frustrated to communicate or my assignment, surrounding people here always offer words of encouragement. It is totally different atmosphere for me. Most times, I feel something wrong, Korean stimulates me to stand up again.Actually, speaking bad words directly to others is not a special thing in South Korea. We pretend those rude acts like caring and worrying him/her. When my cousin, who has lived all of her life in United States, came in Korea, she was really amazed and embarrassed. Including her grandmother, many relatives asked her a lot of questions that step into her private life such as “when do you marry?”, “Why did you break up with your ex-boyfriend?” and so on. Even she had to hear “your clothes is not proper. It is too much.” from a stranger on subway. Those are not desirable situations but they are big parts of Korea culture. Perhaps, Korean culture needs to adopt some indifference from America. Now, I know the indifference in Americans based on “respect” for each other. Respect is a major factor of happiness. Scientists say high quality happiness come from expression one person’s original interesting, feeling and recognition their value from surrounding people. However, eastern cultures under Korea, China, Japan, and so on reinforce the custom that makes young people obey to older people. As a result, a large proportion of the high school students in South Korea study every day from 7am to 10pm to fulfill the second factor of happiness. And just only small amounts of students choose first way and walk lonely way to be happy. They have to endure listening rebuke though they just started because of not having successful results. If the results is insignificant, they are still in isolated environment. It is the one of reasons that a lot of successful people get into wrong ways to remain glory or stop challenging. They do not want to back to be alone again. For another example, I am happy in America. My friends here do not care my details, non-similar behaviors and so on. Also they respect me. I am learning how I can show real respect to others. Living and Learning this fresh environment is big enjoyment for me. However, I don’t want to speak above Korean culture is bad, wrong or undeveloped. I just want to show that each country has each different culture. Also I want to remind my classmates, often, a lot of things which we take for granted are not natural in other sites. Especially, knowing those advantages that provide better environment to be happy is enjoyable and may be make some proud of your culture. Positive view and respecting others increase self-estimate; the most important factor of happy life.
