The Hunger Games Chapter 1 to 5 _Free WritingAlly Kim (670)After I read this Hunger Games book, I considered about the mechanical and ascribed life as be set. Districts of Hunger games are no different from the reality of life these days. My own personal experiences can be also used to prove this point. Every day, we have to study hard at school, even private educational institute from the elementary school to the moment have a job. We have to unceasing effort as much as possible to compete against the other people want to survive. This being so, my mind got me thinking about a Mannerism. In fact, the dictionary definition of Mannerism is losing the creativity and freshness by taking an attitude or a regular form it has always been routine. According to their repeated daily life, modern people who lost their originality usually express their conditions are fall into mannerism. Practically, about 75% of office workers replied they already became stereotyped themselves. Also, most famous entertainers and artists confess that had a hard time of it. Despite this, what’s important from now is how we overcome these differences. Therefore, we must never forget ourselves and be proud of who we are. However, the truth is…It’s easy to forget, but sometimes we need to remember that we are not a product of society…like people who lives in areas of 12 Districts. When put my thought together, this is what I like to say, “Just do what want and live for yourself!” even if it can be a difficult and time-consuming process.
Ally Kim (460)Prof. Brian BittnerApril 22, 2015Compare and Contrast Essay: Noah (2014) & Evan Almighty (2007)The majority of people may be aware of the story about the Noah’s Ark. In the Bible, Noah’s Ark is the vessel in the Genesis flood narrative (Genesis chapters 6-9) by which God saves Noah, his family, and a remnant of all the world’s animals from the fold. Both films Noah (2014) and Evan Almighty (2007) are based on the biblical Noah’s Ark. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, an American action-adventure film Noah is the motif of Noah’s Ark story from the Book of Genesis, chapter 6 to 8. It is mainly about Noah’s dramatic life to save his family from a disastrous flood that overturned to the world. Noah can be compared with Evan Almighty, which is a combination of fantasy and comedy as working with biblical quotes. The story begins with God contacting the congressman Evan Baxter and telling him to build an ark in preparation for a great flood. Both Noah and Evan Almighty are impressive films due to their setting, the character development of God, and their mood.As mentioned in the Book of Genesis, chapter 6, verse 14, both movies begin their stories with the creation of the Ark to receive a revelation of God. However, both films have some differences in their setting. Noah uses the background as it appeared in the Bible. On the other hand, known as a modern version of Noah, Evan Almighty is set in New York, USA. In fact In the Bible, Noah’s Ark is limited to Noah’s family, 3 daughters-in-law, and in the case of animal, 7 pair bonds if they are faithful and one pair bond if they are unfaithful. However, in the movie Noah, Noah sets a limitation that his family and only one pair bond can get into the Ark. In addition, there are two important characters that do not appear in the Bible but give tension to the story. One is the first daughter-in-law, Ila, and the other is Tubal-cain who is the biggest antagonist of Noah. Unlike three daughters-in-law in the Bible, Ila appears as the only one daughter-in-law in the film and plays a role as a catalyst that gives a feeling of tension during the time in the ark. Unlike Noah, The movie Evan Almighty, Evan dose not put a condition on board limit in. Additionally, he had three sons as stock characters but there are no characters such as daughter-in-law who make some tension in the role. There are only those people who disagree such as his boss, town people, and his wife, but no appear antagonistic character such as Tubal-cain in Noah. There are two important characters in the biblical Noah that appear with totally different personality in both films. Noah is the protagonist of the movie. He is a severe father and has a strong sense of responsibility. Noah sets indiscriminate limits to his family and other people. Noah acts with strict control when his first daughter-in-law Ila is pregnant; he even tries to kill babies for the reason that they are unfaithful. Dramatically, Noah calms down his mind and realizes what the most important thing is. On the other hand, in the movie Evan Almighty, Evan, who is newly elected as a congressman, suddenly meets God in human figure and receives a mission to build a huge ark in the middle of Washington. At first, Evan ignores and laughs at the weird mission. However, several materials to make the ark are delivered and hundreds of animals start to bother him and continually follow him around in pairs. However, the townspeople start to antagonize Baxter as he begins the construction of the ark. Baxter is further criticized for being looked as a joke when he wears sack cloth on a regular basis. Congressman Long, who once supported him, becomes the antagonist as the people begin to turn against Baxter.Compared to Noah that has a serious mood, Evan Almighty includes enough humor to satisfy. Even animals do their part to provide a fair share of humor. In the role of God, Morgan Freeman offers wisdom to people. In addition, Steve Carell, who appears as Evan, does an exceptionally sufficient job in delivering humorous dialogues. A number of animals in this film are overwhelming. All in all, humor is an important element in the storyline. In my opinion, Evan Almighty is a more successful movie compared to Noah. In Noah, there was no clear cut message or point to the movie, and even the story seems to drag on. If the director intended to slide off in a tangent, the movie would have been more exciting to watch. On the other hand, Evan Almighty is a well-meaning movie that can make people feel good and probably allow them to realize that one can change the world if he or she does just one thing at a time. This is because one person can someday be a whole nation and later the whole world. It has some humorous elements combined with some good meaning and messages within the story. Furthermore, it contains happy music and a great ending that makes me want to get up and dance.
Topic: ‘Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspirations’Tomas A. Edison1.Good morning audiences, thank you for coming today. My name is Ally Kim, and he is a member of our team, Jackson. We’re the team who highly agree with this famous quote.‘Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspirations’ from Tomas A. Edison who is an American inventor. Therefore, we are going to argue why this quote is correct answer. And why we’re exactly agree with this answer with each argument reasons.First of all, Jackson’s going to argue with his topic sentence that is.. Be hard working is the key of success. No one can be genius since they were born. Genius knows their goal and potentials then push themselves to the limit. Plus he will prove it with common sense and examples in real life. Then, I’m going to argue that Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspirations, and as a representative sentence is… Genius finally can be perfected with numerous efforts and hard times and little genius talent. In order to demonstrate objectively my argument, I will claim with expert opinion and a famous example as a common sense. Thank you.2.Thomas Alva Edison is very relevant in our present day context. It means that it is hard work that makes a person a genius. Edison was of the view that geniuses are made, not born. I agree with his views. Not everyone in this world who has good luck is a genius. Usually we find that the people who work hard to achieve their goal are the ones who are successful.3.Behind the achievement is neither talent nor genius but is persistence. An obstacle always happens with everyone and every day. The conqueror is a person who can endure with them. Does the patient is reason for success of Einstein. He becomes the famous scientist and his accomplishments are well-known around the world. Therefore, I totally agree that genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspirations. To stand with learning is initiative of accomplishment. Brilliance men cannot success without learning. School is not only one method to acquire knowledge but also the outside. For example, Newton, a man who explores the gravitation theory, he sat down under apple tree and noticed that the apple fall down from the tree.At that time he wondered, what is the reason for make object fall down to the ground. Afterwards, he read up and researched until he found this hypothesis and took a long time to disseminate his idea to the world.Practice make perfect. If a man has talent but do not practice, his achievement will not be come as a genius man who is conceited in this gift and leave their time wastefully. To summarize, There are many reasons for accomplishment and talent is one of its. However, it is not the most important thing. We possibly can success in our life if we have a gift b ut we definitely success if we have perseverance to learn. Thus, ‘Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspirations’ It is a highly accurate answer.
4-Point CritiqueAlly Kim, 470Professor. Brian20.Jan.2015Description:The title of this artwork is Poetry of Classical Hymns Series drawn by Richard Krepel, who is a SCAD Illustration Professor. It was created in 2005, and Archival inkjet print was used in this artwork. There are primary elements such as line, shape & form, value, color. The subject matter of this artwork includes Expressionism and Romanticism.Analysis:This picture is composed of five lines: vertical lines for the woman’s position, curved lines for the shape of skirts, woman’s legs and arms, and gesture lines for the woman’s body figure praying for something. Also, short, spiral lines are combined to create a repetitive curve for background and that line also decorated on her skirts. Lastly, we can see the direction that her hands and eyes indicate. Even though lines are not actually drawn or incorporated in this artwork, it creates an implied line, which is an imaginary line from a figure’s eye to a viewed object. I personally think that the most important thing in this picture is shape and color, because the woman’s curved shapes describe the movement that is both fluid and predictable. In this picture, emotion becomes as a gentle waves because there are not only expressed the color with white but no primary colors. The soft warm colors and subtle changes in value help the artwork emphasize a feeling of warmth and peacefulness.Interpretation:As I observe this picture at the first time, I feel depressed. The overall mood of this picture can be warm, but if I look closely at the picture, it can be recognized that this painting also contains lamentable incident or saddest story. When I see the red maples which indicate organic shape on left down side, I feel dreary and lonely about the fact that winter is coming now. Looking in painting for woman, I can find a face overcast with sorrow and her figure is praying for something eagerly and sincerely. Also, the spiral patterns in the background of this painting describe her anxiety, especially the blue one. In addition, this artwork reminds me of my mother, because I have experienced a severe surgery on a femur. It reminded me of my mother’s worry about my health at that time. Furthermore, this painting seems to reflect a woman’s feeling who is praying for stabilization of the family in situation of war.Evaluation:From my point of view, this artwork is quite successful because it makes viewers think deeply about the meaning that is truly implied in this artwork. When we see works of art, the most important thing is whether it’s possible to review or criticize the artwork from different perspective, and how it arouses viewer sympathy by considering on the artwork.
