As time goes by, they inevitably go through lots of decisions and changes such as having babies or quitting their jobs to raise their babies, and so on. At first, everything seems to be new and unstable so that people usually are grateful for just small things. But, as we all experienced, we don’t have much time to appreciate for everything all the time. It is natural that people become indifferent to what they receive from others at regular interval and get tainty or unstableness is getting smaller.“At the time Gregor had bent all his endeavours to helping the family to get over the commercial catastrophe, which had plunged them all into complete despair, as quickly as possible. And so he had begun working with an especial zeal and almost overnight had moved from being a little junior clerk to a travelling salesman, who of course had earning power of an entirely different order, and whose successes in the form of percentages were instantly turned into money, which could be laid out on the table of the surprised and delighted family. They had been good times, and they had never returned, at least not in that magnificence, even though Gregor went on to earn so much money that he was able to bear, and indeed bore, the expenses of the whole family. They had just become used to it, both the family and Gregor; they gratefully took receipt of his money, which he willingly handed over, but there was no longer any particular warmth about it. Because of his job, which requires that he travel constantly, Gregor cannot develop relationships, and so he has no close friends. Moreover, Gregor’s feelings of alienation from his parents also come from the family’s financial circumstances. When he first started earning money to support the family, his parents showed a great deal of gratitude, which Gregor enjoyed. But as Gregor and the parents became accustomed to the new family condition in which Gregor was now the care-taker, the parents’ gratitude gradually diminished and Gregor no longer felt the same feeling of joy in providing for ts grew apart as a result.However, the greatest consequence of Gregor’s metamorphosis might be the psychological distance it creates between Gregor and those around him. Gregor’s change makes him literally and emotionally separate from his family membersindeed, from humanity in generaland he even refers to it as his “imprisonment.” After his transformation he stays almost exclusively in his room with his door closed and has almost no contact with other people. At most, Grete spends a few minutes in the room with him, and during this time Gregor always hides under the couch and has no interaction with her. Furthermore, he is unable to speak, and consequently he has no way of communicating with other people. Lastly, Gregor’s metamorphosis literally separates him from the human race as it makes him no longer human. Essentially he has become totally isolated from everyone around him, including those people he cares for like Grete and his mother. In fact, the alienation caused by Gregor’s must like Gregor in the novel, many fathers finally become money making machine as time goes by. Then, what should they do not to become an outsider? As we learn over the course of the story, there are two apparent causes for alienation. Physical and emotional connections are very important within family members. If they are underestimated, it will definitely cause miserable life of man as a patriarch. Fathers should remember that earning money for family is not enough to have a close relationship with family members. The thing is money is a means for happiness, not an ultimate goal. In some countries including India, still those things remain and women’s lives are miserable (Rahul Abhijit Sirohi). Then, why does it happen? Do you think women are really inferior, unwise, and unintelligent compared to men? Definitely, that is not true. Accordingly, it is not fair to treat women badly. The ‘Punishment’ was written because of discrimination on women and there might be three possible reasons why Chandara doesn’t save herself. Those are minds in manner of revenge toward her husband, renunciation of miserable reality, resistance to injustice.Every single man is afraid of losing his partner regardless of his attitude of treating his loved one if he loves one (Megan R. Moran). In ‘Punishment’, Chidam grabs Chandara by her hair, dragged her back to the room to lock her in, which explains how he usually treats her (Tagore 2). In end of the chapter 2, she turned her heart and soul away from Chidam, and it’s the starting point of misery. It’s because she’s been forcibly taught how to reply for the inquiry without her genuine consent. It is just Chidam’s thought that everything will go fine only if she follows his indication. But, that’s not the case. She knows her husband still loves her based on the fact that he tries to save her (Tagore 3). As she knows he will become very miserable if she dies, so she does it to make a clear revenge toward him.Of course, even though the desire of making a big revenge in a fury might motivate people to do something, but it’s not enough to let them die (Bloom, S. L.). If then, we can figure out another reason for her decision which might be the renunciation of miserable reality. She doesn’t want to see her husband at last moment, instead, wants to see her mother, which seems that she already gives up her life (Tagore 3). As she feels huge misery in her life due to the oppression by men and society, she has no reason for living which results in killing herself. There is no hope, no joy, and no reason for her living. Those who commit suicide have the same mind-sets just like she has.Besides from two reasons, third possible reason exists. That is the resistance to injustice. Even though there are no direct witnesses for the murder, all villagers believe in what Chidam and Ramlochan say without thinking (Tagore 2). There was no scientific way of investigation at that time, of course; still there had to be some kind of investigation. The court and police only relies on what they say including her confession, and it’s not fair to the accused (Tagore 3). The last word she says is that “To hell with him”, (Tagore 3) which seems outwardly the hatreds toward her husband, but also might sound like pessimistic voice toward the world overlooking injustice.In conclusion, it’s hard to say Chandara decides to die for just one reason, because human’s instinct to live is very strong if there is a reason to survive (Beetle). Therefore, it’s reasonable to see the picture in a way that she decides to do that because of her complex mind-sets. If one reason is omitted, then she might want to live. Three possible reasons of her decision make us gloomy regardless of whichever reason she has. Why should she be hung up or accept guilty even though she does nothing wrong? It’s ridiculous.
