  • [영어에세이] 영화 센과 치히로의 행방불명 분석 An analysis of The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro
An analysis of ‘The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro’When I was very young, I remember watching the movie, ‘The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro’ in a theater holding my mother’s hand. Although I cannot remember the whole story, the adventure of a young girl, who was around my age at that time, was so fascinating for me. And, this year, I re-watched this movie by chance. On a sunny day, a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro was moving to a small town with her parents. Along the way, the family found a ruined, mysterious amusement park and went into there. When Chihiro got seized with fear after her parents became pigs, she met a boy named Haku. Haku explained about the mysterious place. The place was where supernatural beings take a break and, to escape from there, Chihiro had to work in Yubaba’s spa. So Chhiro started to work in the spa under the condition of losing her name and being called ‘Sen’. This movie develops as Chihiro works and goes through various experiences. There used to badventure of a girl. To start with the conclusion first, the movie is criticizing today’s capitalist society consumed with greed. Today’s capitalism is broken down by greed. What we have to fear in today’s capitalist society is ‘greed.’ This capitalism with greed maximizes people’s self-interest and finally intensifies human alienation. Human society with limitless egoism making no account of community is no different from a jungle. So, from now on, let’s analyze this movie one by one.First of all, Chihiro’s parents represent ‘materialism’ in today’s capitalist society. In other words, Chihiro’s parents are representing the modern people who are imbued with materialism. At the beginning of the movie, they just eat some food without permission from the owner. Chihiro asked them “What if the owner of this food got mad later?” But they just say “We can pay for it later. Let’s eat first”, “Dad has enough money and also many credit cards, too.” That is, her parents just thought in a materias both parents turned into two pigs. At this point, Chihiro’s parents represent modern people’s greed, too. Generally, the word ‘pig’ is regarded as a symbol of greed and indolence. Similarly, in this movie, ‘pig’ is a reflection of insatiable and self-centered modern people with bourgeois attitude. The following three factors stand for the dehumanizing effects, results of modern capitalism with excessive greed - Kaonashi, employees in spa and people in tram. Dehumanization, or human alienation is the biggest problem that capitalism caused. Under the capitalist system, products made by human beings dominate workers rather than being dominated by workers. Like this, human alienation arises as they degenerated into just tools for manufacturing. Kaonashi refers to modern people’s loss of identity in capitalism. The word ‘Kaonashi’ means ‘having no face’ in Japanese. In addition, in this movie, since ‘Kaonashi’ had no voice, he talked with other borrowing voice of a frog by swallowing it. Lmilar implications with the word ‘face.’ Especially, a name can be the number one identity people can have. Therefore, having any name means the absence or loss of identity. In this regard, Kaonashi symbolizes modern people getting lethargic and losing identity in capitalism.Faces of employees in the spa also show a dark side of capitalism. In today’s capitalist society full of materialism, people live their lives forgetting their own name and individuality. Faces of employees in the spa were exactly the same. The spa is operated under the capitalistic system. The spa is built under vertical relationship from the lowest floor where boiler geezer works to the highest floor where Yubaba lives. Yubaba kept watch on her employees at the highest floor. The reason why all the employees had the same face is that they became a kind of slaves who only covet money under a system of ‘avarice.’ In other words, the materialism made people and, by extension, societies become de-individuated.Lastly, e reminds of heartless modern people going to work by subway in early morning without any interest toward other people. This highlights that the “alienation” is not just a problem of an individual but a problem of the whole society. So, their feature shows people’s image in modern society alienating each other because they had no time to take care of others. People are absorbed only in working hard to get more money than others. In this way, this movie, ‘The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro’, criticizes today’s capitalist society and materialism demanding the needs of changes in modern society through various symbols-pigs, Kaonashi, same faces and even transparent people. Although she experienced a lot of difficulties, Chihiro, or Sen, didn’t give up. Brave Chihiro just did what she had to do sincerely in order to get back to her world. Unlike other beings losing their identity in hard labor, Chihiro did not forget who she is till the end. I agree with this topic. The fact that money i

  • [영어에세이] 한국의 사교육 열풍에 관한 에세이 Korea, addicted to private education
Korea, addicted to private educationHave you ever taken private education when you were young? Maybe, most of you would answer, “Yes”. Korea’s fever of private education is stronger than any other countries in the world. Korea has retained the number one position in rankings about private education among OECD countries, too. In addition, the Washington Post introduced Korea as an ‘education-crazy’ country. This private education craze in Korea can cause many serious problems in our society. So, we have to realize the magnitude of this problem and look for some solutions for this problem.Prior to the beginning, I would like to give a definition of a private education. Private education is a contrary concept of public education. So, it refers to education done outside of the institutions controlled by the government. Usually, the private education is for making up for what students lack at school. Since the extent of understanding in one class can be different and there are some studentsn it.From now on, let’s look at the private education in Korea where the private education is a serious social issue. Today, many Koreans are seriously addicted into private education. When we search for Korea’s private education on the Internet, there is a lot of news about it, especially negative news. Also, we can easily hear the word ‘goose father’ and ‘Chimat-baram’, which reflect current state of the private education in Korea today. The term ‘goose father (Gireogi appa in Korean)’ means a Korean father who sends their children and spouse abroad for the sake of the children’s education and works in Korea alone. And the term ‘Chimat-baram’ has a meaning similar to the ‘soccer mom’ in America. So, it refers to a Korean mother who interferes in their children’s education excessively. Moreover, according to a survey in 2014, about 71% of students have experienced the private education. Also, about 26% of students in Seoul spend over five hundred thousand won per month. Then, I would l it’s a very small increase, the rate of participation got increased in 2015 than last year. Let me go into a little more detail - the rate of participation in private education in each subject. Participation in general subjects including Korean, English and math was 20% higher than in other subjects like art, music and P.E. And among general subjects, English and math had the highest rate of participation. However, sadly and unfortunately, the participation rate of hobbies and cultural studies was only about 3%. These figures show the reality of Korea’s private education, which only focuses on the college entrance examination. Then, what caused this addiction in Korea on earth? There are four big causes of this problem. The first cause is dissatisfaction with the public education. According to a survey in 2015, 61.6% of people were not satisfied with the public education. And the second cause is parents’ excessive education fervor by the extreme competition in our country. Under these and facilities in public education. Still, there is a lack of appropriate capacity of educational facilities suitable for the operation of educational curriculum. Wrong view of education and educational environment can be the last cause. Today, a lot of people view the education only as a way to success in one’s life. Now that we have confirmed the causes, it is time to look for solutions for this problem. There are also four big ways to relieve this phenomenon. Securing high quality teachers to make more people be satisfied with public education can be one solution. More efforts need to be done to boost the education competitiveness in school and restore people’s trust toward public education. And also, improving the college entrance system is one way to solve this problem, too. Today’s college entrance system puts emphasis only on general subjects like math and English. This system must be changed to reduce the rate of participation in private education. The university authorities shosive private education inducing needless competition. So, making evaluations of all the subjects should be avoided. Instead only the core subjects need to be evaluated depending on the students’ aptitude and career. Breaking down the academic factionalism can be the last way. Academic factionalism is an attitude that places importance on people’s educational background regardless of their ability. This can make education system focus only on college entrance exams. In Korea, graduating from a so called 'SKY' university can guarantee success in one’s life. In addition to these solutions, there are some other solutions including reinforcement of parental education program and revitalization of extracurricular educational activities. Not everything about private education is negative. Private education is truly needed to catch up with other students in school or to grow children’s talent. However, if people take it indiscriminately like these days, there would be a lot of problems both inda.

  • [영어에세이] 그레타 툰베리의 기후변화 운동 Fridays for Future
Fridays for Future – Saving the Earth rather than Attending SchoolThe Oxford English Dictionary has chosen the term “climate emergency” as the word of the year. The term refers to a situation in which urgent action is required in order to reduce or, at least, halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damages. It’s the term that Greta Thunberg, who started the Fridays for Future movement as an action of love for the earth and the next generation, has been using to raise awareness on climate change. Greta Thunberg is a sixteen-year-old girl from Sweden with Asperger's syndrome, which is a mild kind of autism, and selective mutism. However, when there is a topic that she is interested in, she becomes an eloquent talker with her eyes twinkling. It’s when she talks about the environment and the future of the earth. In this essay, I would like to talk about the development of Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement, its goal, its effects and a roadmap for the any would think that climate change has adverse impacts only on natural environment, but humans are also severely affected by it. This is not only an environmental issue but also an urgent human rights issue, considering the enormous damage people may suffer in the future. The climate crisis causes natural disasters such as heat waves, cold waves, typhoons and wildfires, and creates food shortages and large-scale refugees. Nevertheless, governments all around the world are being complacent about the issue. The U.S. decided to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement arguing that remaining in the agreement would hurt the country economically. The South Korean government said it will decommission six older coal-fired power plants by 2022 for the earth. But, at the same time, it is also planning to build seven more power plants, which will lead further increase in greenhouse gas emissions because the scale of the power plants which will be retired is only half the scale of those which wimate change that devastates humans’ lives and consequently alleviate it. In order to achieve the goal, she encourages people to participate in the movement. She thought that the more people join the movement, the more amplified the voice for climate change is. Therefore, she decided to serve as a model for saving the earth so that she can inspire more people to take part in the movement. Because of the carbon emissions involved, Greta and her family refuse to fly. Instead of flying she often travels by train. According to the study of David Suzuki Foundation in Vancouver, carbon emissions at higher latitudes cause a series of chemical reaction that leads to an increase in global temperature. Also, she decided to go vegetarian to lessen their carbon footprint on the earth. She argues that meat consumption needs to be cut to prevent further climate change. A report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) shows that reducing the consumption of red meat helps fight against tthat she can do is to make the voters become more concerned about climate change and vote for candidates who are in favor of environmental policies.Greta’s movement for climate change, putting her words into direct actions, has become an inspiration to millions of people around the world. As a result of her effort, the movement has been spreading throughout the world including Belgium, Netherlands, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom in the form of students’ strike. Also, the hashtags #FridaysforFuture and #ClimateStrike emerged on Twitter. On March 15th, 1.6 million people from 133 countries participated in the climate strike. About 100,000 students in London protested with a sign saying, “we didn’t go to school to teach you one thing.” A student in Australia waved a placard saying, "we will go to school when the earth cools down." A lot of media throughout the world reported about the movement with interest. In this way, Greta and other young activists have been intenmate change. The Guardian revealed that the 20 multinational fossil fuel companies have released about 480 billion tons of energy-related carbon dioxide and methane, which accounts for 35% of total global emissions, since 1965. In addition, even though governments set out their policies for climate change, it is of no use if global conglomerates are not compliant with the policies. Hyundai Heavy Industry(HHI) was found to have violated Clean Air Act in the U.S. for four years, from 2012 to 2015. The company sold construction vehicles with diesel engines that were not certified under applicable carbon emission standards.Greta Thunberg and other teenagers who have participated in Fridays for Future movement have inspired people worldwide. They raised their voices holding their head up to save the earth even at their young age. Even now, there would be a lot of students somewhere on the earth gathering and shouting, "Let's change the world to prevent climate change!" But, one thing is req.

  • [영어에세이] Marriage, a choice or a must 결혼은 선택인가 필수인가
Marriage, a choice or a must?Marriage is a system that has existed for an unbelievably long time, especially from ancient times in almost all the societies and cultures. A dictionary definition of marriage is “a form of union between a man and a woman both in legally and religiously.” Marriage helps a couple to build a more solid and developed relationship under the protection of their country. Also, marriage gives a responsibility as ‘a family’ and makes an environment to raise children. Like this, the ‘marriage’ is one of the biggest events in one’s life, a moment moving on to the next step in life. That is, the marriage gives people a starting point to live for their family and society, while they lived only for themselves about 30 years before marriage. However, with the increase of divorce rate and single family, the significance of marriage seems to fade away. Moreover, according to a survey by National Statistical Office, the percentage of people who thinks that marriage is a reonly 51.9%. This is a figure that greatly decreased from 64.7% in 2010 implying people’s views of marriage have changed a lot in recent years. Consequently, a question – Is marriage essential in modern society? - comes up. I would make an answer that the marriage is a duty, which is still required today. So, from now on, I would like to talk about the reason why I think like this focusing on the advantages of marriage.First reason why I think the marriage is a duty is that it provides a stable environment through a stronger union between a man and a woman. Getting married with someone would mean promising to be with their spouse for the rest of all their life. Although the ‘marriage’ is not entirely everlasting, it is a connecting link with responsibility between a couple that is not easy to break. In other words, the marriage eliminates the light and temporary sides of just simply loving relation. Of course, this strong relationship would not be appropriate for couples who just stay iships but the solid and official characteristic of marriage gives better environments both for keeping loving relationship and raising children. And a stable family can be the foundation of a stable society without any social problems.Next, people still have a faith in the social system of marriage. According to statistics, in the United States, about 4 in 10 divorcees remarried, which is a very common case around the world today. 43% of Americans who are in their twenties and thirties had remarried in 2013. This figure shows that a lot of people still hold a belief in marriage. The fact that they still put high values on marriage means that the marriage has its own meaning not only in one’s life but also in the world we live. Therefore, ‘marriage’ is not the outdated system which is not suitable for modern society. The third reason is people can raise their children. A family can make one’s life more meaningful and marriage is the foundation of a family. And a baby can be the very one ness to a family. Being a parent of a child is one of the greatest experiences in one’s lifetime and so almost everyone hopes to experience it. The joy derived from their baby’s little motion is beyond compare. Sure, people can raise children without getting married by adoption. However, to raise children in a healthy and better environment, marriage is essential. Plus, Married people would help their children to build up positive attitudes toward marriage so that the children can have more chances to success in their marriage. And lastly, the low birthrate problem can be also relieved by childbirth after marriage, too.The last and the most important reason can be the emotional stability that marriage offers. According to a study, married people have less chance to suffer from depression than those who did not marry. In harsh modern societies, a spouse can be a sanctuary of life giving emotional security. Just sharing joys and sorrows of life with lovers would make people feel much hapncountering hardships, people can feel relieved by just sharing it with their spouse. Marriage is a perfect drug to overcome any challenge. Plus, going through a lot of times together, couples would be able to shape more stable future with better understanding toward their spouse. In other words, married couples may have more chances to be happy than unmarried people. In married life, people can get positive energy being very satisfied with their daily life. And this positive energy helps people succeed in their work or other aspects. That is, marriage is just like drifting on the sea of happiness in everyday life.Like this, marriage accompanies many positive effects both in one’s life and our society. Human beings live in a complex society and evolve under its care. And, a family, which is based on marriage, is the most fundamental unit of a society. By strengthening the advantages of marriage that I introduced today, we need to develop our society. In conclusion, marriage should be cst.
