결정론과 자유 (Determinism and Freedom)

초록

자유에 관한 철학적 논의의 역사는 꽤 길다. 특히 근대에 와선 자유가 근대과학의 결정론적 세계관과 잘 부합되지 않는 부분이 있었기에 더욱 큰 관심과 논란을 불러 일으켰다. 그것은 그 배경에 중세신학과 근대과학 간의 충돌이라는 더 큰 세계관의 싸움이 깔려있었기 때문이기도 하다.
자유와 결정론의 마찰에 관한 근대 이후 지금까지의 논의는 주로 양자, 즉 자유와 결정론이 양립가능한지 아닌지에 그 초점이 맞추어졌다. 양립론이 맞는지 아니면 불가양립론이 맞는지를 논하고자 하는 것이 이 글의 목적은 아니다. 그 보다는 자유와 결정론이 “양립가능하다” 또는 “아니다”라고 할 때 일반적으로 철학자들이 말하는 ‘자유’란 정확히 무엇을 말하는지, ‘결정론’은 또 무엇을 뜻하는지 하는 기본적인 문제부터 가능한 한 일상적 경험에 비추어 한 번 반성해보자는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 특히 자유개념과 관련하여 거기에 지금까지 철학자들이, 특히 양립론자들이 주목하지 못했던, 따라서 별로 논의가 되지 않았던 의미는 없는지를 두 가지 측면에서 한 번 고찰해보았다. 그 두 측면은 모두 ‘철학적’이라는 말로 특징지어질 수 있는 것들로서 간단히 말하여 그 하나는 욕망이나 두려움, 공포 등과 같은 인간적 구속으로부터 벗어날 수 있는가 하는 문제와 관련된 측면이고, 다른 하나는 인과법칙과 같은 정해진 틀에서 일탈할 수 있는가 없는가 하는 문제와 결부된 측면이다.

영어초록

Whether freedom is or is not compatible with necessity is one of the problems with which many philosophers have been annoyed for centuries. The so-called 'compatibilism' and 'incompatibilism' are well known labels for two different reponses to the problem. To try to decide which one, compatibilism or incompatibilism, is true is not the purpose of this paper. What I would like to do here in this paper is to reflect what exactly the concepts of freedom and determinism mean when freedom is claimed to be compatible with determinism, and to try to raise a couple of questions with respect to the concept.
Diagnosing the dispute between compatibilism and incompatibilism as 'merely verbal', Hume, a classic compatibilist, urges us to accept 'the doctrine of necessity' as a plain matter of fact, in both material and mental worlds, and at the same time to acknowledge that we have liberty, which means that we have “a power of acting or not acting, according to the determinations of the will”.
That one has a power of doing whatever he wants would mean that one is able to do it. Simply being able to do something, however, would not be enough to capture and clarify, the philosophical sense of freedom, just because there are many which have a certain ability to do something without being called to be free. For instance, it makes a perfect sense to say that an airplane can fly, but it must be quite awkward to say that it is free.
Upon trying to make the concepts of freedom and determinism clear, I foundthat there may be some aspects with respect to freedom which would not be captured by the traditional conceptual scheme. So I tried to pay a special attention to two important aspects of freedom, both of which, I think, can be characterized to be 'philosophical' as opposed to 'political' or 'social'. Whether or not the so-called 'philosophical' freedom does make any sense, and if it does at all, what its sense would be, is one of the problems which I personally would like to tackle. The so-called 'philosophical' freedom has, as I think, at least two aspects to be considered: the one has to do with something like a mental emancipation from all kinds of human wants or desires - freedom has been commonly claimed to be found in being able to do whatever one wants or desires, but here it lies in giving up or withdrawing such desires - , and the other with a possibility whether one could tread a path of life which is different from the one regulated and determined by a kind of causal law.
