1. 연구의 필요성
임종은 삶의 마지막 과정을 의미하며, 이 시기에는 신체적·정서적 변화가 집중적으로 나타나 전문적인 돌봄이 요구된다. 통계청(2022) 자료에 의하면 전체 사망자의74.8%가 의료기관에서 임종을 맞고 있으며, 이는 10년 전보다 약 15% 증가한 수치이다. 의료기관 내 임종 비율이 높아지면서 임종기 돌봄의 상당 부분이 의료진의 역할과 책임으로 집중되고 있다. 이처럼 병원에서 임종을 경험하는 비율이 높아지면서, 대상자가 인간으로서의 존엄을 잃지 않고 마지막 시간을 보낼 수 있도록 돕는 전인적 접근이 더욱 요구되고 있다. 이에 따라 임종 단계에 있는 환자와 가족에게 제공되는 간호의 중요성은 이전보다 한층 더 강조되고 있다(Becker, Hannon, & Russell, 1994).
이러한 변화 속에서 간호사는 임종 대상자의 존엄성, 자율성, 삶의 질과 관련된 다양한 윤리적·실무적 갈등을 경험하게 되며, 환자가 존엄한 죽음을 맞도록 돕는 중요한 역할을 수행한다(Park & Kang, 2020).
