♠ In the 17th century, Korea became a vassal state of China and was cut off from outside contact until the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. Following Japan's victory, Korea was granted independence. By 1910, Korea had been annexed by Japan, which developed the country but never won over the Korean nationalists, who continued to agitate for independence.

⇒ The Manchus invaded from the north, fighting on all fronts to out the Ming Dynasty. Invasions in 1627 and 1636 established tributary relations between Korea and the Manchu's Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). But it didn`t mean that Korea became a vassal state of China. Only Korea paid tribute with Chinese troops because of oppression.
And the Sino-Japanese War was just an aggressive war. It isn`t right that following Japan's victory, Korea was granted independence. Japan, in particular, had ambitions of occupying Choson and when she was convinced that victory over China was certain, Japan mobilized its military forces. Japan then drove China out of Choson and marched south with the government army as its puppets to suppress the peasant army(Tonghak). The 200,000 peasant troops under Chon Pong-chun's command engaged in repeated battles with Japan. But they were no match for the modern Japanese army. Thus, the peasants movement, which had as its objectives revolutionary reform within government and society, in addition to the expulsion of foreign forces, ended in failure.
