Ⅰ. Introduction

Extensive epidemiological studies performed in many countries have shown increased blood cholesterol levels, or more specifically, increased coronary heart disease. There is also substantial evidence that lowering total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels will reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease.(Bichhoff et al. 1992, 1996)
HMG-CoA reductase (E.C 1.1.1.34), the rate-limiting enzyme in endogenous cholesterol synthesis is 97KDa glycoprotein and catalyses the reductive deacylation of HMG-CoA to mevalonate in a two-step reaction.(Daniel et al. 1999, Frimpong et al. 1993, 1994) The stereospecificity of HMG-CoA reductase was illustrated in Fig. 1. A finely tuned mechanism modulates the biosynthesis of mevalonate, the precursor of isoprenoid group that are incorporated into more than a dozen classes of end-products(Fig. 2). These include sterols, especially cholesterol, involved in membrane structure; heam A an ubiquinone, which partake in electron tansport ; dolichol required for glycoprotein synthesis ; isopentyladeine, present in some transfer RNAs; and intercellular messengers, such as cytokines in plants, farneylated mating factors in
