요한복음은 예수님에 대한 믿음을 권면하고 독려하는 복음서라는 것은 일반적인 상식이다. 요한복음에서 믿음의 주제가 상당히 중요하다는 사실은 “믿는다”(pisteu,w)는 동사가 신약의 사용 횟수 241회 중 98회가 등장하고 있다는 점뿐만 아니라, 이와 유사한 단어들이 많이 등장하고 있는 점에서 잘 나타난다. 믿는다는 동사와 관련된 일부 단어들은 ‘오다’, ‘따르다’, ‘영접하다’, ‘알다’ 등이다. 이에 대하여 좀 더 구체적인 논의를 위해 다음 자료를 참고할 것. 요한복음의 저자 사도 요한은 20:31에서 “오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라.”고 그의 저작 목적을 분명하게 밝히고 있다. 유상섭, 설교를 돕는 분석 요한복음, (서울: 규장, 1999). 저자는 요한복음 전체의 저자를 예수님의 12 제자중 하나인 세배대의 아들 사도 요한으로 믿는다. 요한복음에 “사랑하는 제자”로 언급된 사람 (13:23, 19:26, 20:2)이 바로 사도 요한이며 요한복음 전체의 저자로 본다.
요한복음이 예수님을 이미 믿은 사람을 위해서 기록된 것인지 아니면 불신자를 예수 믿게 할 목적으로 기록됐는지 아니면 이 두 목적을 다 가졌는지에 대하여는 학자들 사이에 논쟁이 일어나고 있다. 일부 주석가들은 20:31을 저자가 사용했을 것으로 가정되는 소위 표적 자료에 원래 속한 것으로 보고, 20:31의 목적 진술은 요한복음 전체보다는 1-12장에 국한된 것으로 이해한다. 그러나 이러한 이해된 너무 인위적인 것이기 때문에 수용될 수 없다. 20:31에 대한 논의를 위해 다음 자료들을 참고할 것.
