Chinese and Japanese have a great deal of antagonism between them. Historically, they have hated each other. The way the Chinese came over was mostly different from the Japanese. The main pull of the Chinese to America in 1848 was the discovery of gold in California. Mostly young Chinese men were the ones to come over. The Japanese, on the other hand, only sent well-educated men. In 1638 there was actually probation on immigration. Then a United States navy officer, Condor Perry, helped to try to establish trade with Japan in 1850. In 1886 Japan allowed citizens to go with strict regulations included that they would only let the best educated men and their families go to America in order to set prime example of Japan. They had to fill out forms for destination, purpose, employment, wealth, and education.
The reasons for the Chinese and Japanese to come to America were similar in that they were both seekers of employment. However, due to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 that kept out Chinese, agriculture in West was decreasing, and needed workers. Therefore the Japanese filled a lot of those positions. Another similarity for the Chinese had connections called the Six Companies in which they pooled their resources and pay for the Chinese to come over to places like San Francisco.
