영문판 <구운몽>의 독자 반응과 향유 양태 -The Nine Cloud Dream의 독자평을 중심으로- (Responses and Consumption Patterns of English-Speaking Readers to The Nine Cloud Dream)

초록

이 글의 목적은 영문판 <구운몽>을 본 독자의 미적 경험과 반응에 기반하여 한국 고전소설의 향유 양태를 살핌으로써 텍스트의 현재적 의미를 찾고 K-스토리로서 고전소설의 향유 외연을 확장하는 데 있다.
영어권 독자들에게 <구운몽>은 모험-로맨스-역사 판타지, 환상적 동화, 불교 메타소설, 성장소설, 우화 등 다양한 유형으로 읽혔다. 작품의 다면적 성격은 여러 논란을 일으키며 향유층의 분화로 이어졌다. ① 모험과 로맨스 판타지에 중점을 둔 독자층, ② 로맨스 판타지 이상의 의미가 있다고 본 독자층, ③ 판타지와 우화적 성격을 모두 아우른다고 본 독자층 등으로 나뉘었다. 이들은 서사의 초점을 양소유에게 혹은 성진에게 두는가 하면, 두 세계를 넘나들며 텍스트의 의미를 복합적으로 조명했다. 작품에 드러난 유불도의 세계관, 다처제, 환몽 구조 등은 타 문화권의 콘텐츠와 <구운몽>을 잇는 통로로 작용하며 작품의 감상 범주를 넓히는 데 기여했다.
독자들은 인물이 지나치게 완벽하고 과장되며 서사가 등장인물의 욕망에 맞춰 흘러갈 뿐만 아니라 주인공의 행위를 정당화하는 방식으로 꾸려진다는 점에 주목했다. 갈등을 최소화하고 완벽한 인물을 지향하는 문학적 특질은 서양의 현실성과 대조되면서 비현실적 작품으로 인식하게 하는 한편 긍정 에너지를 지닌 작품으로 느끼게 했다. 여성 인물에 대한 관심은 20세기 독자부터 현재 독자까지 이어졌다. 이들은 17세기 가부장제 사회에서 여성이 보여준 주체성과 높은 교육 수준에 놀라고 다처제 구도로 인해 여성 서사가 확장되었다는 점을 짚어내기도 했다. 독자는 환몽 구조, 서사적 반전, 공사상 등 철학적 깊이에 매료되었지만, 서사의 반복성, 남성 중심적 사고, 일부다처제, 지나친 교훈성 등에 대해서는 비판적 시선을 드리웠다.
끝으로, 독자의 반응과 평가에 토대하여 한국 고전소설의 영역 방향을 모색해 보았다. 중국을 배경으로 삼은 한문소설의 영역할 때 중국 표기법을 주로 따랐으나, 오독을 줄이고 한국소설의 정체성을 명료화하는 차원에서 한국 표기법을 적용할 필요가 있었다. 그리고 한국 영문판 서문과 주석은 독법에 강한 영향력을 미치므로 객관적 정보와 더불어 작품의 쟁점과 서사 문법을 소개함으로써 텍스트의 다채로운 매력을 감상하도록 돕는 전략이 요청되었다. 이러한 고민이 더해진다면, K-스토리로서 고전소설의 향유 범위는 더욱 확장될 수 있으리라 본다.

영어초록

This article aims to explore the various modes of enjoyment associated with Korean classical novels, specifically through an analysis of the aesthetic experiences and reactions of English-speaking readers to The Nine Cloud Dream, authored by Manjung Kim and translated by Heinz Insu FenkI. This study seeks to examine the understanding and approach of English-speaking readers towards Korean classical novels, and to establish a foundation for expanding the influence of these novels as an integral component of the K-Story phenomenon.
Readers interpret The Nine Cloud Dream through a diverse array of genres, such as adventure-romance-historical fantasy, fantastical fairy tales, Buddhist metafiction, bildungsroman, and allegory. The multifaceted nature of the work has sparked various controversies and led to the fragmentation of its readership. The elements expressed in the work, such as religiosity, polygamy, dreamlike structure, and the ambiguity between reality and illusion, serve as a bridge for readers to connect with content from other cultures through The Nine Cloud Dream. Additionally, readers take note of how characters are often portrayed as excessively perfect and prone to exaggeration. They are also interested in the narrative technique where the story progresses in the direction desired by the characters and the protagonist's actions are described as justified. Interest in female characters among readers has continued from the earliest translations to modern audiences. These readers are surprised by the assertive voices and high levels of education of women in novels set against the backdrop of a male-dominated society. Furthermore, they note that the narrative of women has been expanded due to the polygamous structure. They are attracted to the dreamlike structure and narrative twists, and are captivated by the philosophical depth, such as the concepts of karma and fate. However, they criticize the narrative for its repetitiveness, male-centric thinking, polygamous structure, and excessive didacticism.
These reader responses provide several insights for translating Korean classical novels. Although Korean classical novels written in Classical Chinese and set in China have primarily used Chinese-style romanization, it is necessary to switch to Korean-style romanization. Translations of introduction and annotations strongly influence reading interpretations. They should be written in a way that provides objective information and helps appreciate the issues and appeal of the work. This research will assist in understanding the consumption patterns of The Nine Cloud Dream and will serve as a foundation for expanding the influence of Korean classical novels as part of the K-Story initiative.
