초록

유가의 의사소통에 담긴 기본 정신은 무엇보다 언행일치 정신이다. 다시 말해 언어보다는 행동 즉, 실천을 우선으로 여기는 의사소통관이다. 이는 유가의 언어관이 철학적 혹은 언어학이라는 독립적인 학문의 관점에서 뿐만 아니라, 사회를 구성하는 일원으로 살아가는 중에 자연스럽게 터득해야 하는 행동방식의 하나이기 때문이다. 유가 의사소통의 핵심은 사회적 소통도구로서의 언어행위에 있다. 즉 사회 속의 의사소통 도구로서의 언어행위에다 사회를 유지시키기 위한 윤리적 덕목으로서의 도덕을 결합시킨 점에 있다. 그래서 유가의 언어관은 실천을 중시할 수밖에 없는 것이다. 현대의 의사소통에서 말보다는 실천이 중요하게 다뤄지는 것 역시 기본적으로 유가 사상에 근저하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 유가의 대표 경전으로 손꼽히는 『논어(論語)』, 『맹자(孟子)』, 『순자(荀子)』를 대상으로 다루게 되겠지만, 무엇보다 공자의 사상을 오롯이 담아낸 『논어』를 중심으로 살피고자 한다. 공자의 일상생활이 충실히 담긴 일종의 어록이라 할 수 있는 『논어』는 그의 소통방식을 들여다볼 수 있는 소중한 자료임은 두말할 필요가 없다. 여러 제자들과의 수많은 대화들이 오가는데, 그는 항상 넓은 마음으로 대화의 문을 활짝 열어 상대의 이야기에 귀 기울이며 의사소통하려는 모습들을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 공자는 기본적으로 상대를 존중하는 태도를 가졌고, 특히 제자들 각각의 개성에 부응해서 성실히 소통에 임했다. 대화의 상대에게 관심을 가지고 상대의 입장에 맞게 자신의 의사를 전달하고자 했다. 결코 일방적으로 의사를 전달하지 않았으며 항상 상대의 입장을 고려하면서 말했다. 또 공자는 진실성이 없는 말은 침묵보다 못한 것이라고 보았으며, 상대에 대한 진정한 관심과 진실한 마음이야말로 언어를 넘어서는 가장 중요한 의사소통의 본질이라 여겼다. 유가의 의사소통방식은 이와 같은 개방성과 정직성 그리고 자신과 다른 의견을 묵살하지 않는 상대의 존중과 배려 그 자체였다. 따라서 본고에서는, 이러한 유가의 의사소통방식을 살펴보기 위해 1)정직하고 진실한 소통, 2)겸손과 상대방의 개성을 존중하는 소통, 3)경청과 침묵의 소통, 4)상황에 적절한 소통 등으로 나누어 고찰하였다. 이러한 내용이 의미를 갖기 위해서는 현대의 의사소통에 적용해도 적절한지일 것이다. 이런 차원에서 유가의 의사소통은 현대의 의사소통 상황에도 상당부분 부합할 수 있고, 무엇보다 실천할 수 있어야 하는 ‘실용성’ 차원에서도 큰 의미가 있다. 올바른 의사소통에 대한 필요성은 현대에도 여러 교육기관에서 의사소통교육을 적극적으로 실시하고 있는 데서 확인할 수 있다. 이런 추세에서 유가의 의사소통방식을 차분히 곱씹어볼 수 있다면, 단지 보여주기 식의 의사소통 스킬이 아닌, 인성교육과 접목시킬 수 있는 일석이조의 기대효과도 충분하다고 생각한다.

영어초록

The first and foremost principle of Confucianism in communication is consistency of speech and action. In other words, the conception of communication in Confucianism gives priority to action or practice over speech. Because Confucianism view of language is not only as an independent academic viewpoint of philosophy or linguistics but also as a way of action that individuals should learn naturally as members of society. The core of Confucian communication is linguistic action as a means of social communication. That is, linguistic acts as tools of communication in society are combined with morality as the practice of virtue needed to maintain society. This explains the emphasis on practice in the Confucian view of language. The greater importance of practice than words in modern communication is also rooted in Confucian ideas. This study examines some of the greatest Confucian classics such as the Analects of Confucius, Mencius, and Xun Zi, with a focus on the Analects as containing the full ideas of Confucius. Being a collection of Confucius’ quotations fully reflecting his daily life, the Analects provide valuable insight into his ways of communication. The book includes extensive conversations between Confucius and his pupils. In these conversations, it is easy to find him opening the door of dialogue widely and listening with a broad mind to conversation. Confucius had an attitude of respect toward others and was sincere in his communication with his pupils, suiting his words to the individuality of each. He showed interest in the individuals he conversed with and tried to deliver his opinions according to their positions. He always took their positions into consideration, never delivering one-sided opinions. He believed that silence was better than insincere words and that true interest in others and a truthful heart were the essence of communication beyond language. The Confucian ways of communication are thus characterized by openness, honesty, and respect and consideration for others without ignoring differences of opinion. In examining the Confucian ways of communication, the present study categorized them as 1) honest and sincere communication, 2) humble communication respecting the individuality of others, 3) communication based on careful listening and silence, and 4) communication suited to the circumstances. It is important to determine whether these ways of communication are appropriate to modern communication and retain significance today. In this respect, the Confucian ways of communication are applicable to a majority of modern communication situations and have great significance in terms of practical effectiveness. The need for correct communication is shown by the active provision of communication education by many different educational institutions in modern society. If people continue considering the Confucian ways of communication calmly in this way, they will combine it with personality education beyond simple communication skills to persuade others of what should be done.
