초록

정보를 선택하고 가공하여 새로운 형태로 구성하는 큐레이팅 저널리즘(Curating Journalism)은 소셜 미디어의 영향력이 커지면서 탄생한 저널리즘이다. 소셜 미디어에서 유통되는 큐레이팅 뉴스는 다른 언론사의 뉴스에 일정한 기획과 재구성을 통해 보다 맥락적이고 균형적인 뉴스를 제공함으로써 기존 저널리즘이 갖고 있는 단순 객관보도와 편협한 정파보도의 문제점을 보완할 수 있을 것으로 기대되었다. 하지만 큐레이팅 뉴스가 기존 주류 언론의 뉴스를 베껴 쓰는 관행과 저작권 문제로 언론의 비판을 받고 있으나, 젊은 층 이용자들은 오히려 가치 있고 믿을 수 있는 뉴스를 충분히 소비하고 있다고 여기는 상황이다. 동시에 큐레이팅 뉴스와 기성 언론의 차이를 구분하지 못하고 큐레이팅 뉴스의 품질을 기준으로 전반적인 주류 언론의 취재와 보도 관행에 대해 비판하며, 나아가 전통 뉴스 미디어가 생산하는 뉴스를 불신하고 외면하고 있는 것도 현실이다. 결국 큐레이팅 뉴스의 가치가 사회적으로 불투명한 현실 앞에 놓여 있음을 보여주는 상황에서, 큐레이팅 뉴스의 현주소를 진단하고 문제점과 한계를 검토하여 개선 방향과 대안책을 제안해야 할 필요성이 제기된다. 이에 본 연구는 소셜 미디어에서 유통되는 큐레이팅 뉴스가 내용적, 형식적 차원에서 어떤 특성을 갖고 있는지 살펴보고, 나아가 공정성과 심층성을 기준으로 큐레이팅 뉴스의 품질 수준을 확인했다. 이를 위해 인스타그램에 <인사이트>와 <위키트리>가 게시한 뉴스들을 대상으로 내용분석을 진행했다. 분석 결과, 내용적 측면에서 큐레이팅 뉴스는 시의성, 근접성, 흥미성의 뉴스 가치를 중심으로 방송과 연예, 스포츠와 같은 문화 관련 주제를 주로 보도하며, 연성화 경향이 강했다. 형식적 측면에서는 역피라미드 구조와 스트레이트 유형의 뉴스가 가장 많이 보도되었고, 대부분 이미 공개되어 있는 정보를 중심으로 뉴스가 작성되었다. 공정성 측면에서 큐레이팅 뉴스의 전체 취재원 수는 평균적으로 1.22개였고, 취재원 유형으로는 타 언론사 보도 및 방송사 자료가 가장 많았다. 큐레이팅 뉴스의 절반 이상은 완전히 단일 관점에 해당되었으며, 허핀달-허쉬만 지수 측정을 통해 특정 보도의 주제에 편중되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 심층성 측면에서 큐레이팅 뉴스의 분석력은 과정과 결과만을 포함한 채 사안의 원인이나 전망을 제시하지 않았고, 뉴스의 깊이 역시 사건 중심의 과정과 결과만을 보도하는 이벤트 중심의 뉴스가 대부분을 차지했다. 또한 익명 취재원보다 투명 취재원이 많이 활용됐지만, 익명 취재원을 사용했을 경우 해당 취재원에 대한 설명이 뉴스에 제공되는 경우가 적었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 종합했을 때, 소셜 미디어상의 큐레이팅 뉴스가 연성화되고 흥미 위주의 보도로 이용자들을 자극해 클릭을 유도하는 것은 더 큰 자극이라는 악순환 고리로 이어지게 만들어 저널리즘의 가치를 하락시킬 수 있다. 이 과정에서 무분별한 복제를 통해 큐레이팅 뉴스의 생산이 이루어진다면, 결국 국내 언론 환경 전반에 ‘약탈적 뉴스’라는 퇴행을 불러올 것이다. 큐레이팅 저널리즘의 발전과 위상을 정립하기 위해서는 생산 구조, 유통 구조, 소비 구조라는 보다 복합적인 단계에서 해결책을 모색할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

The practice of curating journalism, encompassing the selection, processing, and organization of material into novel formats, has gained prominence alongside the increasing impact of social media. The curating news disseminated on social media was anticipated to address the shortcomings of oversimplified, unbiased reporting and biased journalism in traditional media by offering a more comprehensive and impartial news experience. This would be achieved by ongoing strategic planning and restructuring of news content sourced from various media platforms. Nevertheless, this phenomenon frequently disregards copyright laws as it centers on the act of replicating news articles from established media sources. Furthermore, younger users perceive these replicated articles as both valuable and reliable. They are also unable to distinguish the difference between curating news and traditional news, criticize the overall mainstream media and reporting practices based on the quality of curating news, and even distrust the news produced by traditional news media. Consequently, the significance of curating news is confronted with a socially obscure actuality, thereby necessitating an evaluation of its present state, identification of its challenges and constraints, and the formulation of potential avenues and alternative remedies. Hence, this research investigates the attributes associated with the curating news on social media platforms, specifically focusing on the aspects of content and formality. Additionally, it undertakes an assessment of the quality of curating news by evaluating its fairness and depth. To this end, a content analysis was conducted on the news posts from <Insight> and <Wikitree> on Instagram. The findings were as follows. In terms of content, curating news prioritized timeliness, proximity, and interest as news values with a primary focus on culture-related topics such as broadcasting, entertainment, and sports, with a strong tendency toward soft news. In terms of formality, the news reports predominantly employed inverted pyramid structures and straight news. Notably, most of the news was based on publicly disclosed information. In terms of fairness, curating news typically cited an average of 1.22 sources, with other media reports being the most commonly referenced source types. Moreover, over half of the curating news had a single viewpoint, and the Herfindahl-Hirschman index showed a concentration of coverage on specific topics. In terms of depth, curating news mainly offered an analysis of the process and result of events but often lacked the provision of cause and prospect on the issues, leading event-centered news to prevail. Furthermore, despite the higher prevalence of transparent sources compared to anonymous sources, the news articles seldom included justifications or rationales for the utilization of anonymous sources. Therefore, the aforementioned findings indicate that the practice of selectively curating news content on social media platforms and the utilization of attention-grabbing news stories to engage users may result in a detrimental loop that undermines the value of journalism. If curating news is carried out by thoughtless duplication, it will ultimately result in 'predatory news' practices. To enhance its standing in the field of journalism, it is important to explore resolutions at a more intricate level encompassing production, dissemination, and consumption.
