초록

Wat Nawamintararachutis, Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States is the Thai Buddhist temple. This temple has established to celebrate the 60th anniversary of coronation of King Rama IX (King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great), and located in Raynham, near Cambridge which is the place King Rama IX was born. In 2008, Thai government led by Mr. Samak Sundaravej, the former Prime Minister granted 500 million THB (about 14.70 million USD) to build this temple alongside NMR Thai Cultural Council. Therefore, Wat Nawamintararachutis became a third overseas Thai Buddhist temple that Thai government involved in the establishment. Since the establishment of Wat Buddapadipa in London, UK in 1966, Thai government has never supported the government´s budget for the establishment of overseas temple for four decades.
The 500 million THB (about 14.70 million USD) were funded from the National Reserve Fund with some purpose as follows; 1. Wat Nawamintararachutis and NMR Thai Cultural Council could introduce Thai culture and Theravada Buddhism to the United States, and that could make Thai people feel proud of it. 2. Wat Nawamintararachutis recalls King Rama IX who has had a charismatic authority beyond the constitutional monarchy system. 3. Furthermore, Thai government could reveal the respect for King Rama IX through this temple, and also could divert Thai people’s attention away from domestic political circumstances. In the continuing political uncertainty, Thai government's devotion to Theravada Buddhism would be intensified in various ways.
