초록

This paper is to explore Puritanism and Puritanic community represented in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter in its historical context. Hawthorne depicts its ambivalence through Puritanic community that advocates for the cause of godliness and religious passion. In fact this Puritanic community is far from the ‘righteous’ society that the members seek for. Here he shows the conflicts, repressions, and hatreds, inferring the lives of his Puritanical New England ancestors. By putting Hester and Dimmesdale as the cental characters of the sin of adultery, which breaks away from God’s Providence, Hawthorne criticizes the duality of the community through the hypocrisies that the members of the community reveal. After all, Hester’s ‘A’ gradually is thought of as the meaning of ‘Able’ or even ‘Angel’ not as that of Adultery, which also implies the possibility of the change of the community, In conclusion, Hawthorne seems to suggest that though Puritanic community makes many trials and errors, it makes great contributions towards the development of the democracy in American historical context.
