본 연구는 외계생명체(EBE, Extraterrestrial Biological Entity) 영화와 종교 현상의 교차점을 탐구하며, 특히 신종교(NRM, New Religious Movements)의 형성과 연관된 측면을 분석한다.
<프로메테우스> (Prometheus, 2012), <어라이벌> (Arrival, 2016)과 같은 외계생명체 영화들을 통해, 이들 영화 속 외계생명체 묘사가 종교적ㆍ신화적 서사와 어떻게 공명하는지 살펴본다. 또한, 제2차 세계대전 이후 UFO 및 외계생명체에 대한 신념이 어떻게 형성되고, 대중문화에 자리 잡았는지를 역사적 흐름 속에서 추적한다. 나아가, 이러한 믿음이 신흥 종교로 발전한 사례를 분석하며, 라엘리안 운동(Raelian Movement)을 중심으로 UFO 기반 종교 현상을 조명한다.
외계생명체 영화는 종종 외계생명체를 적대적인 침략자로 설정하거나, 반대로 인간을 초월하는 고차원적 존재로 묘사하며 인류의 존재론적 의미를 탐구하는 데 기여한다. 이러한 영화적 서사는 창조, 종말론, 구원과 같은 종교적 주제와 맞닿아 있으며, UFO 신앙 및 신종교 형성의 기초가 된다. 라엘리안 운동은 이러한 종교적 상상력이 실제 신앙 체계로 전환된 대표적 사례로, 과학적 요소와 신비주의적 세계관을 결합한 독특한 신학적 구조를 보여준다.

This study explores the intersection of extraterrestrial biological entity (EBE) films and religious phenomena, particularly in relation to the formation of new religious movements (NRMs). By examining major EBE films such as Prometheus (2012) and Arrival (2016), this study investigates how the portrayal of extraterrestrial beings resonates with religious and mythological narratives. Additionally, it traces the historical development of beliefs surrounding UFOs and EBEs since World War II, analyzing their integration into popular culture. Furthermore, it examines cases in which these beliefs have evolved into new religious movements, focusing on the Raelian Movement as a representative example of UFO- based religiosity.
EBE films frequently depict extraterrestrial beings either as hostile invaders or as transcendent entities surpassing human existence, contributing to existential inquiries about humanity’s place in the universe. Such cinematic narratives align with religious themes such as creation, eschatology, and salvation, forming the foundational basis for UFO faiths and the emergence of NRMs. The Raelian Movement exemplifies the transformation of religious imagination into an actual belief system, combining scientific elements with a mystical worldview to construct a distinctive theological framework. By analyzing these trends, this study explores how contemporary media dissolves the boundaries between science and religious beliefs, facilitating the formation of new modes of spiritual thought.
In conclusion, this study suggests that the human pursuit of transcendental meaning persists even in the era of advanced science and technology, and that faith continues to evolve in diverse forms. EBE-based religions expand the boundaries of traditional religious frameworks while offering novel interpretations of the relationship between humanity and the divine. This phenomenon illustrates how the sacred can emerge in unexpected ways within modern culture, where religion, science, and mythology intertwine.
