초록

본고는 식민지 근대화로 인해 물상화되어가는 농촌의 현실을 문제화한 『신개지』의 서사가 갖는 내재적 의미를 밝히고는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 작가 이기영이 『신개지』의 서사에서 세속적 금욕 윤리를 근대의 성립을 가능하게 한 발전의 동력으로 인식하고 있다는 사실에 주목하였다. 세속적 금욕 윤리는 『신개지』 서사의 내적 구성 원리로 작용하고 있는 것이다. 이런 문제의식에 서서 본고는 세속적 금욕 윤리가 『신개지』의 서사에서 구조화되어 나타나는 양상 및 그것의 역설적 의미망을 규명하고자 했다. 본고에서 밝힌 논점은 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다.
첫째, ‘신구 생활의 대조’를 통속적으로 그려낸 『신개지』 서사는 하감역이 계산적 합리성과 세속적 금욕 윤리를 바탕으로 전근대적인 공간의 표상 ‘달내장터’에서 부를 축적하게 된 내력을 부각하고 있다. 하감역이 보여준 이 두 가지 삶의 태도는 새롭게 부상하는 근대적 삶을 표상한다. 이런 맥락에서 하감역의 삶에 내면화되어 있는 세속적 금욕 윤리는 ‘신구 생활의 대조’를 위한 준거로서 서사적 의미를 갖는다.
둘째, 작가 이기영은 『신개지』의 서사에서 식민지 근대화 과정의 공간적 표상 ‘신개지’의 발전이 초래한 물상화된 농촌 달내골의 현실을 비판적으로 문제화하면서 ‘견실한 시골 청년’ 윤수를 통해 달내골의 물상화된 현실을 극복하고자 하는 서사적 욕망을 드러내고 있다. 윤수는 ‘달내골’을 지배하는 식민지 권력의 표상 하감역 집안을 ‘상대할’ 수 있는 유일한 인물이다. 윤수의 행위가 감옥에서 배우게 된 ‘사색하는 법’에 근거하여 이루어지기 때문이다. ‘사색하는 법’은 근대적 자아의 자기 관계를 나타내는 개념으로, 하상오로 대변되는 ‘신개지’ 읍내 유지들의 허위의 삶과의 대립적 관계 속에서 윤수가 제시한 ‘진실한 생활’의 내적 근거가 된다. 여기에서 ‘진실한 생활’이란 근대적 노동 관념을 표상하는 근면화된 노동의 실천으로 특징지어진다. 바로 작가는 윤수에게 체현된 근면화된 노동의 실천을 통하여 물상화된 농촌의 현실을 극복하고자 하는 서사적 욕망을 드러낸 것이다.
그러나 윤수를 매개로 제시한 근면화된 노동의 실천이라는 『신개지』의 서사적 비전은 인간의 육체적 감각과 감정에서 비롯되는 구체적인 욕망을 억압할 수밖에 없다. 근면화된 노동의 실천 또한 세속적 금욕 윤리의 산물이기 때문이다. 이런 맥락에서 과거 윤수의 약혼녀 순남이 그를 향한 ‘상사일념’으로 고향을 찾아왔지만 윤수의 금욕주의적 태도로 인해 ‘봉천행’ 기차에 몸을 싣는 것으로 끝나는 『신개지』 서사의 종결은 금욕 윤리에 바탕을 둔 근면화된 노동 실천을 탈구축하는 역설적 의미를 상징적으로 드러내준다.

영어초록

This article aims to reveal the inherent meaning of the narrative of New Developed Land(Singaeji) which problematize the reality of a reified rural because of colonial modernization. For this, it was noted that Lee Giyoung recognize a secular ascetic ethics as the driving force of development that led to the establishment of the modern in the narrative of New Developed Land. A secular ascetic ethics is the narrative inner organizing principle of New Developed Land. Based on this awareness, this article was to elucidate the way how Lee Gi Young problematize secular ascetic ethics and its paradoxical means. Issues discussed in this article can be summarized as follows.
First, the narrative of New Developed Land which is depicting ‘the contrast between the old and the new life’as vulgar is Ha Gamyeoka highlighted the history of wealth on the basis of secular ascetic ethic and calculative rationality in Dalnae Marketplace, pre-modern representations of space. The attitude of the two lives he showed is a symbol of modern life forms emerging. In this context, secular ascetic ethic that is internalized in Ha Gamyeok’s life has a narrative meaning as a criterion for ‘the contrast between the old and the new life’.
Second, Lee Giyoung critically problematize the reality of a reified rural, Dalnaegol which is caused by development of ‘New Developed Land’ which is the spatial representation of colonial modernization, and reveals the narrative desire to overcome the reality of a reified rural Dalnaegol through a robust training rural youth named Yunsu. He is the only character capable of dealing with Ha Gamyeok’ house which is a symbol of the colonial power that dominates, as well as Dalnaegol, ‘New Developed Land’. His every action is due to take place on the basis of ‘the law to speculate’ learned in prison. ‘The law to speculate’ here is the concept that represents a self-reflective act of modern self. It is embodied in the practice of ‘true life’ that Yunsu presented, which is opposed to the false life as represented by Ha Gamyeok’s son, Ha Sangoh. And ‘true life’ is characterized by the practice of diligent labor that represent the modern conception of labor. In short, Lee Giyoung is exposed to the narrative desire to overcome the reality of a reified rural through the practice of diligent labor embodied Yunsu.
However the narrative vision of New Developed Land is presented through the diligent practice of labor can only be repressed the specific desires arising from the human physical sense and feelings. Because the diligent practice of labor is also a product of secular ascetic ethic. In this context, the ending of the narrative of New Developed Land, which ends as Sunnam this past Yunsu fiancee came hometown to find him in a passion of love to leave their hometown again because of his ascetic attitude, illustrates the paradoxical meaning to deconstruction of diligent labor practice based on secular ascetic ethic symbolically.
