초록

본 논문은 존 파울즈의 『프랑스 중위의 여자』를 잘 이해하기 위해 원작과 영화 『 프랑스 중위의 여자』를 비교 분석한다. 파울즈의 소설은 전통 소설의 작품관과 작가관을 의도적으로 허물고 있으며, 빅토리아 시대와 20세기 후반을 동시에 다루며, 복수 결말을 작품 속에 담고 있기에 각색을 하는 일이 쉽지 않은 작품이다. 노벨상 수상작가인 탁월한 헤롤드 핀터의 대본에 기초를 두고 캐럴 라이츠 감독이 제작한 영화 『프랑스 중위의 여자』는 “영화 속의 영화”라는 장치를 통해서 두 시대를 영화 속에 담아내고 마지막 장면에서도 복수 결말을 제시함으로써 영화화하기 어려운 원작을 성공적으로 영상언어로 표현하였다. 물론 영화 속에서는 소설에서 중요하게 다루어진 실존주의 주제가 제대로 다루어지지 않음으로써 비판을 받기도 했다. 소설 독자는 영화가 원작에 충실할 것을 기대하나, 영화도 독립된 작품이므로 그것 자체의 예술성을 두고 성패를 평가하는 것이 타당하다. 소설에서 서술자가 작품 속으로 개입하는 간섭저자의 모습을 취하며 이 소설이 실재의 반영이나 재현이 아니라 순수하게 상상한 허구일 뿐이라는 것을 독자에게 반복해서 일깨워주는데 영화에서도 마이크가 애나를 사라로 혼동함으로써 이런 장치를 반영한다고 생각된다. 19세기의 엄격한 성 윤리, 체면과 형식 중시, 관습과 전통 중시 등의 시대정신이 찰스와 사라 그리고 어네스티나를 중심으로 어둡고 침침한 색조 속에 ‘영화 속의 영화’의 내용으로 효과적으로 처리된다. 대조적으로 개방적인 20세기의 시대정신은 밝고 환한 배경 속에 빅토리아 인물들을 연기하는 마이크와 애나를 중심으로 그려진다. 찰스와 사라가 배를 타고 행복한 미래를 향해 출항하는 첫 결말은 소설 속의 60장 결말을 반영하며, 마이클을 남겨두고 애나가 차를 타고 떠나는 두 번째 결말은 미흡하지만 소설 속의 61장 결과를 그리려고 시도한 것으로 보인다. 영화가 문학의 상상력을 제한하고 파괴하는 측면도 있지만, 영화는 선명한 영상을 통하여 원작을 이해하는 데에 많은 도움을 준다고 생각된다.

This paper makes a comparative analysis of a novel, The French Lieutenant's Woman written by John Fowles, and a film, The French Lieutenant's Woman, directed by Karel Reisz. The novel destroys traditional views on novel and novelist intentionally. It deals with both Victorian Age and 20th century. And also this novel contains multiple endings. Hence it can't be easily adapted or filmed.
Harold Pinter, a winner of Nobel Prize, succeeded in making a faithful adaptation of Folwles's novel. Reisz's film was made in 1981, based on this script. Karel Reisz's device is making 'a film within a film.' Modern actor and actress, Mike and Anna, love each other in the outer framing story. Their counterparts in the 19th century, Charles and Sarah, love each other in the inner framed story. Although Reisz's film has not caught existentialism theme, it can be highly estimated in the fact that he succeeded in depicting different ages and in suggesting multiple endings. Many early critics paid much attention to whether the film is a faithful adaptation of the original novel or not. But it is reasonable that a film possesses its own characteristics and it has to be judged by its artistic degree of perfection.
In the original novel, modern narrator tells Victorian story. Frequently he intrudes into the story, and pronounces his own opinions. Chapter 13 shows the reader an intrusive author who has a limited knowledge and control of characters and events in the work. He reminds us that a fictitious story, which we read believing it is a real story, is not a real story. The narrator blurrs the boundaries between reality and fiction. This illusive message is contained in the movie when Mike mistakes Anna for Sarah in the last scene.
Strict sexual morality, respectability and formalism, convention and tradition of 19th century are dealt with effectively in the dark and black background, focusing on Charles and Sarah of 'film within film'. By contrast, we can see free and open spirit of 20th century in the modern casts, Mike and Anna. First ending of the film reflects the original novel's ending of chapter 60. Sarah and Charles row a boat, sitting together, on the Windermere Lake. This is a happy Victorian ending. The film's second ending is different from the novel's one. Fowles's original text shows us an existential hero, Charles, who begins to lead his own life in chapter 61, but the film suggests a frustrated man, Mike, who failed to get Anna as his lover.
The original text is not easy to read and understand. And an average man, who didn't read the novel, will have some difficulty in interpreting the movie when watching it at first. But, the film, made of visual images, must help a reader to understand the original text very well, because the film is a comparative faithful adaptation of the original text. The experience of reading the novel also will be greatly helpful to appreciate the filmed version.
