문학 교육의 관점에서 본 고전소설의 '우연성과 초현실성' - <최척전>의 교사용 지도서 분석을 중심으로 (Happenstance and Surreality of Classic Stories In Aspects of Literature Education - Based on the Analysis of a Teacher’s Guide for Tale of Choi Cheok(崔陟傳))

초록

본고는 고전소설의 일반적 특징으로 언급되고 있는 ‘우연성과 초현실성’이 고전소설에 대한 잘못된 선입견을 조장하는 주된 요소임을 지적하고, 이에 대한 적절한 교육 방안을 모색하기 위해 기술되었다. 그리고 이상의 문제의식을 구체화하기 위해 <최척전>을 수록하고 있는 문학 교과서의 교사용 지도서 내용을 점검하였다. 점검 결과, 우선 <최척전>은 역사적 사건으로서의 전쟁(정유재란)이 서사 전개에 활용되면서 기존의 소설에 비해 ‘사실성’이 강화된 작품이라는 점을 문학사적 의의로 강조하고 있었다. 한편 우연성과 초현실성을 드러내는 화소도 여전히 존재함을 부각하면서, 이를 ‘고전소설의 일반적 특징’ 차원에서 분석·정리하였다.
문제는 <최척전>에서 보이는 ‘우연성과 초현실성’을 곧바로 조선 후기에 유행한 영웅 소설의 그것과 동질적인 것으로 규정하고, 나아가 그러한 요소가 <최척전>의 사실성 확보라는 문학사적 의의와는 구별되는 일종의 텍스트적 한계인 것처럼 교육의 방향을 제시하고 있다는 점이다. 이는 결국 사실성을 보다 철저하게 구현한 소설만이, 소설이라는 장르의 본령에 다가선 것이라는 암묵적 전제가 깔려있다는 점에서 재고의 여지가 있다. 더욱이 해당 지도서의 관점은 고전소설과 현대소설을 사실성의 확보라는 규준을 통해 구획함으로써 양자 사이의 이질성을 강조하는 결과를 낳을 수도 있다는 점에서 반성적 성찰이 요구된다.
교육 현장에서 발생할 수 있는 이상의 문제적 상황을 극복하기 위해서는 무엇보다 ‘우연성과 초현실성’의 이면에 잠복해 있는 역사적 맥락과 의미를 함께 환기할 수 있는 교육적 관점이 절실하다. <최척전>의 경우, ‘장륙불의 현몽’이나 이산을 겪었던 가족들의 극적인 재회는 단순히 사건 전개를 위한 우연적이고 초현실적인 화소가 아니라 실제로 전란을 겪었던 당대의 많은 사람들이 <최척전>을 통해 받았을 문학적 위안을 가능케 한 요소로서 교육되어야 한다. 그리고 이러한 교육적 관점을 확보하기 위해서는 소설 장르를 넘어 당대의 전쟁 체험이 반영된 일기와 전(傳) 등의 부대 자료에 대한 폭넓은 이해가 필수적으로 요청된다. 특히 많은 교사들이 수업 진행을 위해 자주 활용하는 교사용 지도서의 경우, 그 집필 과정에서 작품의 창작과 향유를 둘러싼 역사적 맥락을 충분히 조명할 수 있는 다양한 자료를 활용함으로써 교사들이 보다 온당한 작품의 분석과 감상에 이를 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to point out that happenstance and surreality, both popular characteristics of classic stories and folktales, are the main factors that promote prejudice against the tales themselves, and to seek proper education methods to fix this. In order to clarify the point at issue, the content of a teacher’s guide for a literature textbook that contains The Tale of Choi Cheok was examined. After a careful study, it became clear that the teacher’s guide claims that The Tale of Choi Cheok has significance in the literature history because, compared to the other existing classic stories, the tale enhanced reality in it by utilizing the war(丁酉再亂) as a historical event for narrative development. At the same time, however, it highlights that the story still has episodes that reveal happenstance and surreality, and analyzes and arranges them according to the “general characteristics” of folktales and classic stories.
This kind of categorization of these attributes is problematic, as it defines happenstance and surreality, present in The Tale of Choi Cheok, as the same as those found in heroic fictions which were popular in the late Joseon Dynasty and, furthermore, it suggests that such factors are limiting elements which are distinguished from the significance of literature history of The Tale of Choi Cheok, its securing realism. After all, there is room for improvement in that the teacher’s guide has implicit premise that only a story with realism more thoroughly embodied in it can reach the proper province of the genre of fiction. In addition, the point of view of this guidebook requires reflective introspection in that it classifies classic stories and their modern counterparts by the criterion of securing realism, which may result in emphasizing the heterogeneity between the two.
To overcome such problematic issues that may arise in the practical education field, it is necessary, above all, to have an educational perspective that can call attention to both the historical context and meaning that lie behind happenstance and surreality. In the case of The Tale of Choi Cheok, Buddha’s appearance in a dream or the dramatic reunion of once-separated family members should be taught not simply as accidental and surreal episodes used to develop the story, but as elements that enabled many people of the time who actually were suffering through a war to find literary comfort and peace of mind in it. Also, in order to secure such educational perspectives, having a comprehensive understanding of other related references, such as journals and biographies reflecting the war experiences of the time, not to mention the fiction genre itself, is essential. It is key that teacher’s guides used to guide classroom curriculum contain a variety of materials that fully present the historical context surrounding the creation and consumption of literary works so that teachers are able to analyze and appreciate them in a more proper way.
