초록

Because Seoul is a melting pot for Korea’s socio-cultural heritages, artisans’ contributions to representation of Seoul’s cultural values have not been fully appreciated until the present day. It is well known, however, that artisans’ design sense and ability are the primary bases for design of many artifacts in Korean society. It may be possible to represent traditional cultural and spatial characteristics in the works of artisans through new garden design. This was the Seoul city government’s main objective in hosting the 2015 Seoul garden festival in Pyeonghwa Park near Sangam-dong. The Seoul Artisan Garden design was primarily intended to convey both spatial messages and symbolic implications of artisans’ concepts of traditional Seoul culture. The garden itself comprises four layers representing these concepts: the artisan as a person, the tools used, the crafts made, and the nature employed to expose the image. The natural aspects of grass and flowers in the garden interrelate both within and beyond the boundaries of a large, single circle, giving contrast effects. The symbolic image of the relationship between artisan and nature is expressed by the method of displaying grass with crafts in the background, or arranging flowers with repeated shrub partitions as main visual objects. This design metaphor offers a unique method for attracting strong visual curiosity, thereby conveying symbolic meanings of Seoul artisans’ cultural heritage to garden visitors.
