설화에서 공유된 자연생명의 생태학적 재해석과 재창작 (Ecological Reinterpretation and Re-creation of Natural Life Perception Shared in Folktales)

초록

지구 가열화로 인류는 기후비상사태에 직면하고 있다. 인간의 일방적 자연정복이 빚어낸 생태학적 자연 재앙이다. 생태위기의 과학적 인식보다 설화의 생태학적 인식이 공감력과 함께 실천 기능이 더 크다. 따라서 설화의 생태학적 자연인식으로 생태위기를 극복하는 것이 인문학적 대안이다.
설화의 자연생명 인식은 우주의 생성에서부터 상호 소통에 이르기까지 여러 층위를 이루고 있다. 첫째 우주는 인간의 남녀처럼 음양 교섭으로 생성되고 천지만물을 낳는다. 둘째 자연생명은 인간처럼 살아 있으면서 인간생활에 불가사의한 위력을 미친다. 셋째 자연은 인격적 존재로서 인간과 대등하게 상호 교섭한다. 넷째 자연생명은 인간보다 도덕성이 더 우월하다. 다섯째 탁월한 인간은 자연과 서로 소통이 가능하다. 이처럼 설화적 세계에서 자연은 인간에게 여러 모로 영향을 미치고 서로 교섭하며 소통하는 인간 이상의 생명으로 인식된다.
설화에 나타난 생태학적 세계관을 실현하려면, 기존의 과학기술과 학술연구, 문예창작을 모두 혁신해야 한다. 과학계는 가)사람들이 자연생명과 소통할 수 있는 번역기를 발명해야 하고, 설화학계는 나)설화를 인간중심의 상투적 해석에서 벗어나 생태학적 시각으로 재해석하는 연구를 하며, 다)기존 설화를 생태주의에 입각하여 재창작하거나 후속편을 새로 창작해야 세계관의 전환이 가능하다. 그러한 실천으로 ‘은혜 갚은 까치’, ‘꾀 많은 토끼의 재판’, ‘토끼와 거북이 경주’ 등의 설화 재해석과 재창작을 시도했다.
생태위기를 극복하는 인문학적 대안을 위해 고정관념을 해체해야 한다. 기존 설화의 서사구조를 뒤집고 인간중심주의를 극복하는 생태학적 탈중심주의로 설화 재해석과 재창작 작업이 긴요하다. 설화학자도 작가처럼 재창작을 시도하고, 작가도 재창작으로 학자처럼 새로운 해석의 전망을 제시한다. 학자와 작가는 둘이면서 하나이고 하나이면서 둘이다. 생태학적 세계관은 분절적 관계에서 총체적 관계를 열어가는 것이다.

영어초록

Humanity is faced with a climate emergency that global warming has brought about. This is an ecological natural disaster caused by the human unilateral conquest of nature. The ecological perception found in folktales can elicit greater sympathy and action than the scientific awareness of the ecological crisis. Therefore, overcoming the ecological crisis with the natural perception of folktales can be a humanistic alternative to the climate crisis.
The perception of natural life in folktales consists of several layers from the creation of the universe to mutual communication. First, the energies of yin and yang, like human men and women, interact with each other and create the universe, from which all creatures are born. Second, natural life, living and breathing like humans, exerts mysterious power to human life. Third, nature, as a personal being, interacts with humans on an equal basis. Fourth, natural life is superior to humans in morality. Fifth, some outstanding humans can commune with nature. In this world of folktales, nature is recognized to have influence on human life and is perceived as a higher being than humans who interacts and communicates with each other.
To put into action the ecological worldview shown in folktales, it is necessary to innovate all the existing scientific technologies, academic research, and literary creation practice. The scientific community needs to invent a translator that enables people to communicate with natural life, and the folktale researchers are required to conduct studies to reinterpret folktales from an ecological perspective, breaking away from the human-centered conventional interpretation. For a transition in the worldview, there is a need for the re-creation of the existing folktales or the creation of their sequels based on ecologism. As a practice of such approach, this study attempted to reinterpret and re-create Korean folktales such as “The Magpie Who Returned the Favor,” “The Trial of the Tricky Hare,” and “The Tortoise and the Hare.” To find a humanistic alternative to overcome the ecological crisis, approaches to dismantle stereotypes are required. In other words, it is crucial to reinterpret and re-create folktales in order to reverse the existing narrative structures and overcome human-centered values. Folktale researchers should recreate existing stories like writers, and writers should present new interpretations like scholars based on rewriting work. The scholar and the writer are two but one, and one but two. The ecological worldview is about forming a holistic relationship from a segmental relationship.
