<태원지>의 필사 배경에 관한 일고찰 (An Inquiry into the Background of the Transcription of Taewonji)

초록

본 논문에서는 <태원지>의 필사자인 조명교를 중심으로 필사 배경에 대해 살펴보고자 했다. 조명교는 <태원지>의 필사자로서 학계에 보고된 바가 있으나, 아직 그에 대한 상세한 고찰이 이뤄지진 않았다. 이에 본 논문에서는 『영조실록』과『승정원일기』, 조명교의 묘지명 등을 근거로 삼아 조명교의 당파에 대해 고찰함으로써, 몇몇 오해의 여지를 바로잡고 조명교를 소론으로 보는 견해를 확고히 뒷받침할 수 있었다. 조명교는 18세기의 인물로, 소론 계열 중에서도 온건파에 속하며 그러한 성향으로 인해 경종에 이어 영조의 탕평 정권에서도 꾸준히 활약한 관료 지식인이었다.
이를 밝힘으로써 필사 배경에 영향을 주었을 만한 요인들을 논할 수 있었다. 일차적인 요인으로는 소론의 학문적 경향을 들 수 있다. 소론계 지식인들은 일찍부터 천문학적 지식에 밝았으며 18세기에는 서구 지구설도 적극 수용하고 있었다. <태원지>의 필사 또한 이와 같은 소론의 열린 학문적 풍토를 배경으로 삼아 이뤄졌으리라 예상된다.

영어초록

This study aims to conduct a thorough examination of Cho Myung-kyo, the scribe associated with the transcription of Taewonji. Despite his recognition within academic circles as the scribe of Taewonji, a comprehensive analysis of his role remains conspicuously absent. Therefore, by meticulously scrutinizing historical sources such as the Yeongjo Sillok, Seungjeongwon Ilgi, and the name of the cemetery of Cho Myung-kyo, this study endeavors to rectify certain misconceptions and firmly advocate for the attribution of Cho Myung-kyo as a member of Soron (少論).
Cho Myung-kyo, a prominent figure of the 18th century, belonged to the moderate faction within Soron and served as a bureaucratic intellectual who actively contributed to Yeongjo's Tangpyeong policy. This assertion, based on extensive historical evidence, provides a nuanced understanding of Cho Myung-kyo's affiliations and ideological inclinations.
Moreover, this study delves into the underlying factors that may have influenced the transcription process of Taewonji. Foremost among these factors is the intellectual milieu of Soron, characterized by a propensity for open-mindedness and scholarly engagement. Soron's flexible approach to embracing new ideas, including those stemming from Western sources, likely shaped the transcription of Taewonji within a framework of academic pluralism.
Additionally, the evolving landscape of scientific thought during the early to mid-18th century emerges as a secondary determinant in the transcription process. The burgeoning influence of Western knowledge during this period prompted a dialectical discourse that sought to reconcile traditional worldviews with novel scientific paradigms. Taewonji reflects this intellectual tension by juxtaposing indigenous cosmological concepts with Western theories of the earth, underscoring the complexity of intellectual exchange during the era.
In conclusion, this study not only elucidates Cho Myung-kyo's role as a pivotal figure in the transcription of Taewonji but also sheds light on the multifaceted influences shaping intellectual production in 18th-century Korea. Moving forward, further research endeavors are encouraged to unearth additional archival materials and contextual insights, thereby enriching our understanding of the creation and reception of Taewonji within its historical milieu.
