초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and structure of the experiences that the families of persons
with AIDS endure. Methods: This was qualitative research using the phenomenological method. Data, which was
collected using an in-depth individual interview of five female caregivers, was analyzed by Colaizzi's method. Results:
Six themes emerged from the analysis: 'Denial of reality' is the unimaginable feeling after discovering one of the family
members is infected. 'Disease to be buried secretly in their heart' is the yoke to bear as well as the distress to conceal
the AIDS infection. 'Resigned acceptance and incessant caring' is a coping method for their fight against AIDS, unwillingly
accepting it. 'Relative and absolute burden' is family responsibility, relatively or absolutely more serious and intolerable
compared with other diseases. 'Inevitable sense of family duty' is a family feeling, intolerable yet unable to give up
the infected, and the importance and growth of family is recognized while looking after the infected. 'Wishes for a better
future' means a need for recovery and prejudice from AIDS. Conclusion: This study is expected to be useful in the development
of nursing strategies and interventions for the families of persons with AIDS.
