알타이언어의 새로운 연구 방향에 대하여 (A New Direction of Research on Altaic Languages)

초록

알타이언어(관점에 따라서는 알타이어족이라고 부르기도 한다.)는 세 어파를 포괄하는 개념이다: 튀르크어파, 몽골어파, 만주퉁구스어파. 최근까지 한국에서 알타이언어들을 연구하는 관점은 오로지 한국어의 계통을 연구하기 위해서였다. 즉 한국어의 조상이 알타이언어와 관련을 가지고 있으며 비교 연구를 통하여 그 관계를 정립하려고 한 것이다. 이러한 연구는 어느 정도의 성과를 얻었지만, 한국어가 알타이어족에 속한다는 확정은 하지 못한 채 답보 상태에 머물러 있다고 볼 수가 있다. 게다가 알타이언어 학계에서는 알타이어족이 존재하지 않았을 가능성이 있다는 연구도 상당한 지지를 얻고 있다.
이 글에서는 절멸 위기에 직면한 만주퉁구스어파의 두 언어의 현지 조사 경험을 참고로 하여 앞으로의 알타이언어 연구 방향을 제시하였다. 첫째, 어원어의 경우 이 언어의 어휘 구조가 문화적으로 매우 흥미가 있음을 보였다. 둘째, 만주어 구어의 예를 통하여 중국어의 요소가 이 언어의 음성, 음운 문법 분야에 크게 영향을 미치고 있는 점을 보임으로써 절멸 언어의 일반적인 특징을 보였다. 다른 한편으로는 알타이언어들은 지구상에서 가장 연구가 덜 된 언어이다. 따라서 이 언어에 대한 연구를 통해서 일반언어학적으로도 크게 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 한국의 언어학자들도 인류의 가장 귀중한 문화유산인 언어가 사라져 가는 것을 막기 위하여 또는 사라져가는 언어를 기록하여 두거나, 그 언어들을 교육하여 절멸 위기를 해소하는 작업에 나서야 할 것이다. 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 두 가지 목표를 동시에 수행하게 된다. 즉 첫째는 절멸 위기의 언어를 문서화(Documentation)하는 세계 언어학계의 노력에 동참한다. 둘째는 한국어의 계통을 밝혀 줄 수 있는 가장 귀중한 언어 자료를 문서화해 놓음으로써 장래의 연구에 대비할 수가 있다.

영어초록

The Altaic languages (also called the Altaic language family from a different point of view) includes three language branches: Turkic, Mongolic, and Manchu-Tungusic. Until recently, the viewpoint of Altaic language research in Korea has been solely directed towards the genealogical study of the Korean language. That is, they have tried to work out the relationship between Korean and the Altaic languages through comparative study, with a speculation that the language from which Korean developed is in relation with the Altaic Languages. Although such research yielded achievements to some extent, the question of whether to classify Korean into Altaic remains unanswered. Besides, the research in which they suggest the possibility that the Altaic language family itself might not have existed, is rather gaining significant supports among scholars.
In this study, we emphasize that we aim to conduct research on the Altaic languages from a new angle with the results of previous research at its foundation. We view dead languages or endangered ones with a small number of speakers as one aspect of the critical situation where humanity is losing its cultural diversity. Quite a number of the Altaic languages, particularly most of the Manchu-Tungusic branch are facing extinction. Linguistic societies around the world today are raising efforts to document endangered languages. Linguists in Korea, too, will have to be actively involved in fulfilling the task.
We present here research direction for the future under the guidance of our fieldwork experience of two Manchu-Tungusic languages that have become vulnerable to loss. One of the findings is from Ewen, in which its word structure reflects a very interesting cultural background. Spoken Manchu as well provides a typical characteristics of endangered languages; it is observed as being significantly influenced by Chinese on its phonetic, and phonological grammar. Research on these Altaic languages is also a contribution to general linguistics, since the Altaic languages are virtually the least studied languages on earth.
Korean linguists will have to put in all their effort to stop languages―the most valuable cultural property of mankind―from disappearing, by making records of languages that are falling out of use, and teaching those languages in order to save them from vanishment. In this way, we will achieve two goals at the same time. Namely, the first one is that we participate in the struggle of linguists around the world involved with the documentation of endangered languages. Secondly, we perform a service for future study, by documenting data of the most valuable languages that could shed light on the genealogy of the Korean language.
