신라 황룡사의 창건과 진흥왕의 왕권 강화 (The Foundation of Hwangyong temple and King Jinheung's Royal Authority Strengthening in Silla)

초록

본 논문은 신라 황룡사의 창건 과정을 살펴봄으로써 진흥왕이 창건을 통해 궁극적으로 목적했던 바가 왕권 강화였음을 검토하고자 하였다. 주지하는 바와 같이 황룡사는진흥왕 14년(553)에 새로이 궁궐을 지으려던 터에서 황룡이 출현하자 사찰로 변경되어창건되었다. 그런데 궁궐은 왕권을 상징하는 가장 강한 표상이므로 진흥왕과 황룡사 창건의 관계가 정치적 상관성을 갖는 이유가 여기에 있다.
발굴조사 결과에 따르면 현 황룡사지의 지반은 원래 늪지였다. 따라서 우선 궁궐 건설의 계획을 수립하고, 늪지의 매립과 같은 대규모 토목공사를 진행해야 했다. 진흥왕14년이라는 황룡사 창건 연대는 궁궐이 사찰로 변경된 시점을 나타낸 것이다. 이는 늪지의 매립이 6세기 중반에 완료되고 인근에 도로가 조성되었을 것으로 추정한 연구에의해 입증된다. 이때 조성된 도로는 격자문 도성의 주된 유구로 이와 궤를 같이 하여 황룡사의 寺域이 확정되었다.
북위와 일본의 사례를 통해서 검토해 본 결과 이러한 도성제도는 율령의 제정･반포와 일정한 상관관계를 형성했다. 곧 율령에 의한 통치제도를 확립하기 위해 도성을 정비하고 궁궐을 건설했던 것이다. 이와 관련하여 법흥왕 7년의 율령 반포 및 동왕 18년의 제방수리 명령에 주목했다.
법흥왕을 이어 즉위한 진흥왕은 전대의 정치･사회적 분위기를 이어 받는 한편, 유년에 즉위한 까닭으로 왕태후와 이사부의 섭정을 받았다. 그러나 재위 초기는 섭정에대한 부정적 인식의 확산과 전쟁･대규모 토목공사 등으로 인해 각종 정치･사회적 문제가 야기되었다. 이는 궁궐 건설에 대한 부정적 인식 및 계획 변경의 원인이 되었다.
그런데 황룡사 창건에 대한 연구를 진행함에 있어서 반드시 주목해야할 것이 창건의 결정적 역할을 했던 ‘황룡’이다. 이에 여러 기록에 의거한 고대인의 인식 체계를 기준으로 하여 다각도로 황룡의 분석을 시도해 보았다. 곧 황룡은 상서로운 징조로서 정치의 衰缺함을 은폐하고자 한 의도로도 볼 수 있으며, 다른 한편으로는 상실한 수호신인 황룡을 잡기 위해 사찰을 세우고 호법룡의 역할을 부여한 것으로도 해석할 수 있다. 황룡에 대한 이러한 인식은 황룡사 창건에 정당성을 부여하였다.
親政 이후 더욱 강력한 왕권을 위해 전륜성왕사상을 수용한 진흥왕은 즉위의례적創寺 행위인 황룡사 창건을 통해서 왕위의 정당성을 획득하고 왕권을 강화하고자 하였다. 결국 황룡사는 왕권 강화의 기틀을 확립하고자 한 진흥왕의 종교적 상징물이자 정치적 권력 기반으로 작용하였다.

영어초록

This study try to confirm that King Jinheung pursued ultimately royal authority strengthening through the foundation by looking the process of foundation of Hwangyong temple in silla. As every knows, Hwangyong temple was founded by changing from making the new royal palace to the temple at 14 year of King Jinheung. There is the reason why it have a political relationship between foundation of Hwangyong temple and King Jinheung because a palace is symbol of royal authority.
According to excavation investigation, the ground of Hwangyong temple area was originally bog land. Therefore, it devised a plan to build of palace at the first and had to progress grand-scale public works such as reclaim bog land. However, provided it takes notice at researcher's estimation that some roads was made near the temple after end of the reclaiming bog land at the middle of the sixth century, the period of foundation as 14 year of King Jinheung is pointing the changing time from royal palace to the temple. The roads which is made near temple is the main ruins of gridpattern capital system, in sync with it, Hwangyong temple was demarcated the temple area.
On investigation in the case of the northern Wei Dynasty and ancient Japan, this capital system formed consistent correlation with establishment and proclamation of the law. Which mean, modifying of the capital city and building royal palace to establish a ruling system by the law. In relation to this, it's took note of proclamation of the law at 7 year of King Bupheung and command of repairing dike at 18 year of same King.
On the other hand, King Jinheung who ascended following King Bupheung inherited political and social moods of previous generation, He was acted as regent by the Empress Dowager and Isabu because King came the throne when he was young. However, in the early reign of King Jinheung, it was occurred various political and social problems with the diffusion of negative awareness about the regency and the war･grand-scale public works. It was became the cause of negative awareness and changing of plan about building of the palace.
But we surely have to take notice of Yellow Dragon which was an active role on the foundation in the study about foundation of Hwangyong temple. So I tried analysis from various angles about Yellow Dragon by awareness stage of the ancients on the many data. That is to say, Yellow Dragon can be considered in a intention that it try to cover up political flaw as auspicious sign, on the other hand, it can interpret to give a role of the Dragon as the defence of a Buddhism for catching the Yellow Dragon lost patron saint. This awareness about Yellow Dragon legitimized on the foundation of Hwangyong temple.
After the politic by himself, King Jinheung accepted Cakravartin idea to more powerful royal authority. Then he tried to acquire legitimacy of the throne and strengthen royal authority through a sort of the ceremony of a accession to the throne. Finally, Hwangyong temple works as a religious symbolic icon and political power base for King Jinheung who tried to build up the basis of King's power.
