박열의 일왕폭살계획 추진과 옥중투쟁 (Park yeol’s Japanese Emperor Assassination Plan and Struggle of Law Court)

초록

1923년 9월 1일 관동대지진 와중에 조선인을 6천여 명 이상 학살하고 6천여 명을 불법검속한 일본 제국주의세력은 학살의 책임을 모면하기 위해 박열과 그의 애인 가네코 후미코(金子文子), 그리고 불령사 동지들을 체포했다. 박열은 조사과정에서 동지들을 보호하기 위해 자신이 그해 10월 황태자 결혼식에 맞춰 폭탄투척 계획을 세운 바 있다고 당당히 밝혔고, 金子文子도 이 계획을 알고 있었다고 주장했다. 이를 빌미로 일본정부는 뚜렷한 물증이나 계획전모를 밝히지 못했음에도 불구하고, 두 사람을 ‘대역죄인’으로 만들어 사형에 처하려 하였다.
그동안 박열의 일왕폭살투쟁에 대하여는 일본 검찰의 신문조서를 ‘1차사료’로 삼아 연구되었다. 하지만 이는 사실을 숨기려 했던 당사자들의 진솔한 기록이 부족하다는 점에서 많은 한계와 오해를 갖게 하였다. 이에 이 글에서는 그동안 폭탄유입과정에서 제대로 평가하지 못한 관련자의 진술을 활용하여 실행여부를 재평가하고, 옥중활동에 참여했던 관련자의 기록도 주목하였다.
이를 통해 밝혀진 바는 첫째, 그동안의 연구와 달리, 박열은 치밀한 준비와 다양한 경로를 통해 모두 5차례에 걸쳐 폭탄유입을 추진했고, 마침내 유입에 성공하였다. 이는 그동안 일본 검찰조사과정에서 알려진 4차례의 추진 이외에도 불령사 회원 최영환을 통해 중국 다물단으로부터 폭탄을 전해받은 것으로 확인할 수 있다.
둘째, 박열과 가네코 후미코는 옥중에서의 검찰신문과 법정투쟁을 통해 천황제에 맞서 철저히 투쟁하였다. 일본 사법부는 심문과정에서 천황제를 비판하는 두 사람에게 여러 차례 전향을 시키려 노력하였으나, 모두 실패하고 말았다.
셋째, 1926년 7월 23일 가네코 후미코의 갑작스런 죽음은 정확한 시간이나 원인도 밝혀지지 않았고, 일본 형무소측의 일방적인 처리로 타살의 혐의를 짙게 하고 있다. 당시 현장으로 찾아간 동지들은 그녀가 옥중에서 임신하게 되자, 일본 형무소측이 낙태수술을 감행하다가 죽게 만들었다고 판단했다. 고인의 유해는 일본경찰의 감시와 많은 마찰을 빚은 후 박열의 고향으로 보내져 묻힐 수 있었다.
넷째, 1925년 5월 당시 옥중에서 찍힌 박열과 가네코 후미코의 이른바 ‘괴사진’은 이후 담당 판사가 파면 당하게 만들고, 일본 내각이 붕괴되는 등 큰 파장을 불러일으켰다. 이처럼 박열과 가네코 후미코의 일왕폭살계획 추진에 이어 당당한 옥중투쟁은 일본 제국주의와 천황제의 뿌리를 근본부터 뒤흔든 일대 사건이었다.
