초록

본 연구는 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈<흑백요리사: 요리 계급 전쟁>을 분석하여글로벌 OTT 플랫폼에서 K-콘텐츠가 경쟁서사와 공정성의 환상을 어떻게 구축하는지 고찰한다. 서바이벌 오디션 형식의 리얼리티 프로그램인 <흑백요리사>는 ‘흑수저’와 ‘백수저’라는 계급적 은유를 통해경쟁 서사를 형성하며, 넛지 이론의 선택설계를 활용하여 경쟁 구조를 재구성한다.
<흑백요리사>는 최종 우승자를 선정하는과정에서 한국 서바이벌 오디션 예능의 특징인 계급 서사와 공정성 담론을 두드러지게 반영한다. 한국 사회는 급격한 경제 성장과 함께 계급 이동의 가능성을 이상적으로 인식했으며, 이는 계층 간 상향 이동에대한 동경을 불러일으켰다. 이러한 사회적인식 자체가 사회 혁신을 이끄는 동력으로작용해 왔다. 프로그램은 참가자들이 개인의 노력과 재능만으로 경쟁자를 제치고 승리하는 과정을 통해 지위 상승과 신분 이동의 기회를 얻는 것처럼 그려낸다. 제작진은 명확한 규칙과 시스템을 제시하여 경쟁의 공정성을 강조하고, 이를 통해 시청자들에게 공정한 경쟁이 이루어지고 있다는 인식을 심어준다. 그러나 이러한 서사적 구조는 현실 사회에서의 계급 이동 가능성을 과장하거나 왜곡하는 경향이 있다.
특히 ‘흑수저’가 노력과 재능만으로 ‘백수저’의 세계에 진입할 수 있다는 서사는 시청자들에게 비현실적인 희망을 제시한다.
이는 한국 사회의 계급 이동이 구조적으로제한되어 있으며, 상층계급이 더 유리한지위를 차지하고 있는 현실과 상반된다.
본 연구는 행동경제학의 넛지 이론을 적용하여 TV 프로그램 <흑백요리사>에서 나타나는 ‘공정성’과 ‘경쟁 서사’가 사회적불평등을 은폐하고 공정성의 환상을 구축하는 방식을 비판적으로 분석한다. 선택설계가 참가자들의 의사결정과 경쟁 행동에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, 경쟁 이론을 통해 프로그램의 경쟁 구조를 규명한다. 콘텐츠 분석 방법을 통해 경쟁 서사와 공정성 환상이 콘텐츠 제작 과정에서전략적으로 활용되는 양상을 탐구하였다.
연구 결과, K-예능 콘텐츠는 글로벌 OTT 플랫폼을 통해 사회적 계층 이동의 가능성을 이상화하면서 구조적 불평등을 간과함으로써 공정성의 환상을 재구성하고 있다.
이는 K-콘텐츠가 사회적 현실을 재현하는방식과 시청자 인식에 미치는 영향을 이해하는 데 시사점을 제공한다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the Netflix original series <Black and White Chef: Cooking Class Wars> to examine how K-content constructs the illusion of “fairness” on global OTT platforms. <Black and White Chef> forms a competitive narrative through class metaphors of “black spoon” and “white spoon,” and restructures the competitive framework using nudge theory. As a survival-style reality program, <Black and White Chef> prominently reflects the class narrative and discourse on fairness characteristic of Korean survival entertainment through the process of selecting the final winner via a type of audition process. In Korean society, the possibility of upward social mobility has been idealized alongside rapid economic growth, leading to a longing for upward movement between social strata. Within the program, it appears that participants are provided opportunities for status elevation and social mobility by overcoming competitors and winning through individual effort and talent. The production team emphasizes the fairness of competition by presenting clear rules and systems, thereby conveying to viewers the image that fair competition is being conducted. However, this narrative structure tends to exaggerate or distort the possibility of social mobility in real society. In particular, the narrative that a “black spoon” can enter the world of “white spoon” solely through effort and talent instills a hopeful illusion in viewers. In reality, social mobility in Korean society is structurally limited, and the upper class occupies a more advantageous position, which contradicts this portrayal. This study critically analyzes how <Black and White Chef> conceals social inequality through “fairness” and “competitive narratives,” thereby constructing the illusion of fairness, by applying nudge theory from behavioral economics.
In this process, it examines the impact of choice architecture on participants’ decision-making and competitive behavior, and elucidates the essence of the competition structure within the program through competition theory. The research was conducted using literature review and content analysis methods, and it thoroughly explores how competitive narratives and the illusion of fairness are strategically utilized in the content production process. The study’s results suggest that K-entertainment content idealizes the possibility of social mobility through global OTT platforms while reconstructing the illusion of fairness in a way that overlooks actual structural inequalities. These findings provide significant insights into understanding how K-content represents social realities and affects viewers’ perceptions.
