無畏國統 丁午와 원간섭기 백련결사의 전개 (National Preceptor Muoe and the Development of Baekryeon-gyeolsa during the Period of Mongol Intervention)

초록

본고는 丁午의 활동을 통해 원간섭기 白蓮結社의 변화가 갖는 의미를 추구하였다. 14세기 전반 백련결사의 변화에 대해 了世가 개창한 백련결사의 정신을 지키는 세력과 변질되어 親元化․귀족화된 세력으로 二元化하여 이해해왔고, 충렬왕의 妙蓮寺 창건이 백련결사 변질과 분열의 계기라고 하였다. 그러나, 이 시기의 정오로 대표되는 백련결사를 이원적으로만 구분지어 보기는 어렵고, 정오와 묘련사와의 관계를 특별히 중요하게 볼 수 있을지 재고해 보아야 한다. 우선 정오는 天 과 밀접한 관계가 확인되며, 정오의 사상과 활동 그리고 고려 天台宗史에 대한 인식 역시 천책과의 관련성 속에서 계승과 변화의 측면을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 또한 정오와 문도들은 개경으로 진출한 이후에도 백련사와의 관계를 지속하고 있고 정오가 묘련사 주지를 지내기는 했으나 묘련사와 관련해서는 그다지 주목되는 활동이 보이지 않는다. 대신 백련사 인근 암자인 용혈암 및 괘탑암과 하산소로 지정된 용암사 및 금장사 중수, 고려 천태종의 중심사찰인 국청사 중창, 그리고 『법화경』을 중심으로 한 佛書간행과 寫經이 그의 주된 활동이다. 이중에서 국청사 중창이 갖는 의미는 여러모로 중요하다. 무엇보다도 이 과정에서 백련결사가 천태종단을 대표하는 위상을 확보하였다. 정오는 국청사 중창을 통해 천태종의 정통성을 확립하고자 했고, 이러한 자신감은 천태종 개창자로서의 義天에 대한 재인식과 천태사상에 대한 정치적 해석으로 발현되었다. 정오의 활동은 14세기 백련결사가 천태종 전체를 아우를 정도로 성장한 모습을 보여주는 한편, 고려후기 지방교단 주도의 개혁적인 불교운동이었던 백련결사가 원간섭기 개경교단 주도의 보수적인 불교로 회귀함으로써 결국 결사정신이 쇠퇴하는 14세기 고려불교의 전반적인 동향과 한계를 보여준다.

영어초록

This study aims to explore the significance of changes of Baekryeon-gyeolsa(白蓮結社, the White Lotus Association) developed through the activities of Jeong'o(丁午), National Preceptor Muoe, during the period of Mongol intervention. The changes of Baekryeon-gyeolsa in the first half of the 14th century have been dually understood by dividing into two opposing forces; one is the party holding fast to the founding spirit of Baekryeon-gyeolsa established by Yose(了世), and the other is the party gradually turned into pro-Yuan(元) dynasty and become part of the aristocratic class. It has been also understood that the watershed moment of the deterioration and division in the Baekryeon-gyeolsa was establishment of Myoryeonsa(妙蓮寺) by King Chungryeol(忠烈王). However, considering the activities of Jeong'o during that period, a member of the Baekryeon-gyeolsa it is difficult to discern whether the Baekryeon-gyeolsa was dually divided or not. First of all, Jeong'o is confirmed to have had a close relationship with Cheonchaek(天 ). In terms of his intellectual succession and changes, his philosophy, activities and his insight of the Cheontae Order(天台宗) history in Goryeo need to be reviewed on the basis of his relationship with Cheonchaek. In addition, the fact that Jeong'o and his disciples maintained a relationship with the Baekryeon-gyeolsa even after they moved to Gaegyeong(開京), capital of Goryeo indicates that the activities of Jeong'o can be seen as an extension of the activities of the Baekryeon-gyeolsa. Though Jeong'o served as the head monk of Myoryeonsa, he seems to have been relatively inactive while he stayed there. Instead he was mainly engaged in the reconstruction works of Yonghyeolam(龍穴庵) and Gwaetapam(掛塔庵), both located near Baekryeonsa and of Yong'amsa(龍巖寺) dedicated to retired Royal Preceptor or National Preceptor and Geumjangsa(金藏寺) as well as the refurbishment work of Kukcheongsa(國靑寺), a major temple for the Cheontae Order in Goryeo. His major activities also include publication and transcription in gold of Buddhist scriptures, mainly the Lotus Sutra. Among these activities significance of the refurbishment of Kukcheongsa is important in many respects. Above all it was in the process of the temple’s refurbishment that the Baekryeon-gyeolsa obtained the representative status of the Cheontae Order. Jeong'o tried to secure the legitimacy of the Cheontae Order through refurbishing work of Kukcheongsa and his pride derived from this project was eventually manifested in reappraising Uicheon(義天), founder of the Cheontae Order and in political interpretation of the Cheontae thoughts. Through Jeong'o's activities, it is noted that the Baekryeon-gyeolsa was developed during the 14th century as the dominant force embracing the entire Cheontae Order. On the other hand, his activities also show the overall trends and limitations of Goryeo Buddhism during the 14th century that the Baekryeon-gyeolsa, the reformative Buddhist movement in the late Goryeo led by the local Buddhist sects, lost its founding spirit in the end by returning to the conservative Buddhism led by Gaegyeong sect during the period of Mongol intervention.
