호주는 제2차 세계대전 종전 이후 일본을 심각한 위협으로 인식하며 더 이상 태평양에서 안전을 보장해줄 수 없었던 영국의 그늘에서 벗어나 미국과의 협력 관계를 새롭게 구축하고자 했다. 그 결과 호주는 1951년 미국, 뉴질랜드와 앤저스 조약을 체결하였고, 이는 호주가 태평양에서 영연방을 대표하여 미국과 협상 테이블에 앉게 되는 계기를 제공하였다.
그리고 호주는 이어진 인도차이나 위기와 대만 해협 위기에서 미국과 영국 간에 갈등이 발생했을 때 맹목적으로 한쪽의 의견을 좇는 대신 자국의 이익에 부합하는 최선의 외교적 행보를 펼쳐나갔다. 호주는 인도차이나 위기 시 미국이 섣불리 움직일 수 없도록 영국과 의견을 일치하여 단호히 대응하였고, 대만해협 위기 시에는 미국과 영국 간 갈등의 골이 깊어졌을 때 중재자로 나서 태평양 지역 영연방의 대표로서 입지를 분명히 했다.

After World War II, Australia regarded Japan as a significant threat and sought to establish a new partnership with the United States, moving out from Britain’s shadow, as Britain could no longer ensure security in the Pacific. Although Australia’s initial efforts were hampered by U.S. strategic priorities, its troop deployment during the Korean War demonstrated its strategic value and opened the door to negotiations with the United States. As Chinese forces entered the war, altering the military balance, the United States, eager to expedite The Treaty of Peace with Japan, sought to assuage Australian concerns by agreeing to a long-desired security pact. The ANZUS Treaty, signed in 1951, fell short of fulfilling Australia’s aspiration to share strategic plans with the United States. Nevertheless, it was a landmark moment, positioning Australia as a representative of the British Commonwealth in Pacific negotiations with the United States.
During the subsequent Indochina and Taiwan Strait crises, as tensions between the United States and Britain escalated, Australia refrained from blindly siding with either power. Instead, it carefully navigated its diplomatic course, striving to adopt strategies that best aligned with its national interests, advancing step by step toward pragmatic and balanced solutions. During the Indochina crisis, Australia aligned with Britain to firmly oppose U.S. military intervention, fearing that escalation would broaden the conflict. In the Taiwan Strait crisis, Australia acted as a mediator when divisions between the United States and Britain widened, solidifying its role as the Pacific representative of the British Commonwealth.
Moments when the United States extended its hand to Australia to expand intelligence-sharing mark some of the most pivotal points in the development of the U.S.-Australia alliance. Initially, the U.S. proposed intelligence liaison exchanges primarily as a means to counterbalance British influence. However, following the Taiwan Strait Crisis, Washington came to recognize Australia as a vital strategic partner in the Pacific and formally invited it to join the UKUSA Agreement. This marked Australia’s entry into the Five Eyes intelligence network, a milestone that established it as one of America’s core allies. Moreover, it signaled the beginning of closer alignment between the United States and Australia in the Pacific region, laying the groundwork for deeper strategic cooperation.
