김우창 비평의 문학사 담론과 역사인식 방법론 (Discourse on Literary History and Methodology of Historical Awareness in Kim, U-chang’s Literary Criticism)

초록

이 논문은 김우창 비평의 문학사 담론과 역사인식 방법론을 상세하게 규명하고자 했다. 이를 위하여 1) 한국 현대시사의 담론 2) 한국 현대소설사의 담론 3) 진보주의 역사인식 방법론이라는 세 가지 의제로 나누어 논의를 전개하고자 했다.
김우창 비평 전체를 수미일관하게 관통하는 진보주의 역사인식 방법론은, 그것의 핵심어인 “구체적 전체성”이라는 개념 속에 이미 포함되어 있다. “구체적 전체성”은 기성의 지배적인 현실 원리로 존재하는 “드러난 전체성” 뿐만 아니라, 아직 도래하지 않은 “감추어진 전체성” 또는 “보다 넓은 차원의 전체성”이라는 말로 축약되는 시간적 연속성과 역사적 변화의 가능성을 전제하는 개념이기 때문이다.
김우창의 한국 현대문학사 담론은, 그것을 둘러싼 사회적ㆍ역사적 사실들에 대한 실증적이고 귀납적인 검토를 포함하지 않는다. 따라서 그것은 실제적이고 구체적인 문학사 기술이 아니라, 그 자신의 역사철학적 이념과 방법에 따라 한국 현대문학을 연역적인 방식으로 범주화ㆍ유형화ㆍ분류화한 것에 불과하다는 비판을 벗어나기 어렵다. 그의 문학사 담론이 결국 역사적 실증성과 구체성을 담보하지 못하는 것은, 그 자신이 선취한 역사인식 방법론을 현대 한국문학사의 전개 과정에 그대로 대입하는 자리에서 비롯된다.
그러나 이러한 문제점은 한국 현대사 전체가 안고 있었던 한계인 동시에 우리의 현대 학문 체계 전반이 감당할 수밖에 없었던 후진성에서 나온다고 보는 것이 합당할 것이다. 이 한계에도 불구하고, 그의 문학사 담론은 한국문학이 성취해야 할 긍정적 가능성의 자리를 그 어떤 논의보다도 탁월한 이론적 수준에서 제시해주었기 때문이다. 김우창 비평이 한국 현대 인문학 전체의 기념비적 업적으로 기록되어야만 하는 근거 역시, 이러한 긍정적 가능성과 높은 이론적 수준에서 나온다.

영어초록

This paper aims to investigate the discourse on literary history and methodology of historical awareness in Kim, U-chang’s literary criticism in detail. For this, it develops the discussion into three topics; discourse in the history of modern Korean poetry 2) discourse in the history of modern Korean novel 3) methodology of historical awareness of progressivism.
Progressive historical awareness consistently penetrating his whole literary criticisms is already included in its keyword ‘concrete totality’. Because ‘concrete totality’ is not only ‘veiled totality’ which exists as a established dominant reality principle but also a concept which premises the possibility of historical change and temporal continuity being contracted as the term ‘unveiled totality’ or ‘wider dimension of totality’.
Kim’s discourse on the history of modern Korean literature does not include a positive and inductive review of socio-historical facts surrounding it. Therefore, it cannot get away from criticism that it is not an actual and concrete description of literary history but merely a result of deductive categorization and classification of modern Korean literature according to his own historical philosophical ideology and method. The reason for his discourse on literary history not being able to secure historical substantiation and concreteness comes from the place where he substitutes his methodology of historical awareness into the developmental process of the history of modern Korean literature as it is.
However, it is appropriate to say that this problem is caused from the limits modern Korean history has and at the same time from backwardness the whole system of modern learning has to deal with. Because his discourse on literary history has suggested the place for positive possibility modern Korean literature should reach to with the most outstanding theoretical level ever. These positive possibility and exceptional theoretical level give sufficient reasons for accepting his literary criticism as monumental achievements of the humanities in modern Korea.
