Medieval castles in the southland of Gyeonggi, are mostly located near village, to control a traffic route, and to supplement and to reinforce the fortress used untill Goryeo dynasty that had been constructed during three kingdoms of Korea and Unified Silla period. And their inside space is too confined that long-term sit-in is impossible, except Bongnamri mountain fortress. Not only the extent of castles are usually under 1,000㎡, but also the relative altitudes are lower than the others. In case of stone fortress, Construction method of rampart is similar with other area, but in case of earthen ramparts, there is no stone alignments of the stylobate, and also ditriglyph is narrow, 155cm. These aspects have difference with other protective fortress known as Goryeo dynasty. And it probably because of the geological factors that there is no rugged mountain in southland of Gyonggi and regarding a traffic route that connect the interior and the coast as important.
Also, military defense system, in this area, make the best use of the fortress which already built before, and castellation had been proceeded the surroundings. Therefore, the one of characteristic of defense system in southland of Gyeonggi is not defending on the each castles but associating with many fortress nearby. Land traffic routes show this appearance. Along with this condition, new castlellations at the substance of sea route were went along for the area defense. And that has the possibility related with the marine transportations started in the beginning of Goryeo dynasty.
To analyzing the protective fortress in the southland of Gyeonggi, the result is that was not built in the Goryeo dynasty first. The origin of protective fortress in the southland of Gyeonggi, Korea, is Namhan- sansung fortress which built in the Silla-Tang war period. As well, it had been built during the Unified Silla period, and the tradition of protective fortress goes on to the Goryeo dynasty.
