草衣 意詢에 對한 一考察 － 詩書畵 三絶과 關聯하여 － (A Study on the Choeui Euisun)

초록

한국불교사에 있어서 草衣 意恂(1786-1866)만큼 다양한 문화를 섭렵한 인물도 그리 많지 않을 것이다. 그는 조선후기 불교계의 大禪匠이요, 한국 茶道의 中興祖는 물론 茶聖으로 추앙받고 있다. 거기에다 詩書畵에 능한 三絶이요, 梵唄에도 뛰어났던 것으로 잘 알려져 있기 때문이다.
草衣의 禪思想을 茶禪一味로 볼 때 그의 詩書畵는 어떻게 설명할 것인가? 體用은 不離요 不二라면 당연히 用이라고해야 한다. 따라서 禪‧茶‧詩書畵는 하나인 것이다. 그래서 草衣와 禪, 草衣와 茶, 그리고 草衣와 詩書畵는 따로 떼어놓고 생각할 수 없다.
그런 草衣를 불교의 관점에서 본다면 위대한 선승(禪僧)이요, 차(茶) 문화를 이끈 점에서는 훌륭한 茶人이다. 또 사대부들과 어울려 시를 읊을 때는 詩僧이었음이 분명하다. 이처럼 그는 한 시대의 문화를 원융ㆍ회통시킨 대표적인 문화인이었다. 그렇기에 僧侶라는 賤한 신분임에도 불구하고 사대부들과 함께 할 수 있었던 것이다.

영어초록

In Korean Buddhism, there is few one like Choeui Euisun(草衣意詢, 1786-1866) who had dipped into the diverse cultures. He was held in high esteem as the Daeseonjang(大禪匠, the great master of the zen Buddhism) of the late Chosun Dynasty Buddhism and was respected as not only the Jeungheungjo(中興祖, the father of the Korean tea ceremony restoration) but also the Daseong(茶聖, the great master of the tea ceremony) in the Korean tea ceremony. In addition, he was known as the talented person in various fields of poetry, calligraphy and painting(詩書畵). Furthermore, he had the distinguished ability in Beompae(梵唄, a kind of the Buddhism music).
How do we explain poetry, calligraphy and painting of Choeui when we regard his zen philosophy as Daseonilmi(茶禪一味, the tea and the zen have the same taste.). Cheyong(體用, both the body and the action of an object) can not be separated. If the concept, Cheyong, is not two, one should tell that the zen and the tea are the bodies and that poetry, calligraphy and painting are the actions. Consequently, the zen, the tea, poetry, calligraphy and painting are the same. So we can not regard 'Choeui and the zen', 'Choeui and the tea', and 'Choeui and poetry, calligraphy and painting' as separate things.
From this point of view, it is obvious that he is the great zen monk, the man who led the tea culture and the poetry monk when he composed a poem with the sadaebu (士大夫, the upper ranks of society in the Chosun Dynasty). Thus he was the representative man who promoted the development of the culture of the time. Therefore, he participated with the sadaebu in spite of his humble social position, the monk.
