초록

19세기 이미 산업혁명의 성공을 거둔 영국의 무분별하고 탐욕적인 팽창주의와 산업화, 기계화된 비극적인 현실 속에서 회의를 느낀 영국 낭만주의자들은 자신들의 타락하지 않은 과거, 그 중에서도 중세에서 새로운 정치적, 사회적, 이데올로기적, 예술적 이상향과 낙원을 찾고자 했다.
라파엘전파의 형식과 주제에서 낭만주의에 내재된 문명 이전의 때 묻지 않은, 타락하지 않은 순수함을 간직한 과거로의 회귀에 대한 갈망과 동경은 기독교적인 중세주의의 부활로까지 소급되는데, 그들은 중세를 타락 이전의 정신성을 회복시켜 줄 숭고한 성소에 비유하였다. 19세기 영국에서 중세는 지적, 정신적 탐구의 대상이 되었다.
19세기 영국에서 고전주의에 의해 암흑시대와 결부된 원시적인 것으로 비하되었던 중세가 관심 있게 주시되고 재조명되면서, 중세는 고도의 물질주의와 기계화에 의해 훼손되고 읽어버린 최초의 시간의 흔적이자 그 모습으로, 그 시절로 다시 돌아가야 한다고 생각되어졌다.
라파엘전파는 무엇보다 종교화를 당대 영국에 가장 부활되어야 할 장르로 간주했기 때문에 14, 15세기 이탈리아 미술을 통해 과거와 현재를 연결하고 종교적 주제와실재를 혼합하여 그들만의 독특한 종교화 양식을 만드는데 화가들이 습득해야 할 중요한 영감의 원천들 중 하나였다. 본 논문은 라파엘전파 예술가들이 종교적인 주제로이탈리아 거장들의 화면에 담긴 화풍과 색채미학을 단순히 모방하고 재현하는 것에그치는 것이 아니라 사실적인 묘사가 돋보이는 화면을 창출하여 러스킨이 강조한 종교적 상징성과 사실성을 동시에 확보하려는 데에 심혈을 기울였음을 밝히고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper explores the Pre-Raphaelites’ rediscovery of the italian primitive artist Fra Angelico in Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s <Ecce, Ancilla Domini!>, which tried revive the Christian art from Medieval Ages and early Renaissance in England in 1850’s. The Pre-Raphaelites can be regarded and considered as an art movement focusing on the revival and rebirth of medievalism and religious painting intended to restore the lost and destroyed spirituality in Victorian England.
The principal motivation of the Pre-Raphaelites was a critical reaction and attack against Neoclassicism influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds, founder of the English Royal Academy of Arts, and conventional art in the Academy system which succeeded Raphael. In 1848 when the Pre- Raphaelites established by seven members including the key figures such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, began to flourish, nostalgia for Gothic and medieval ages, greatly influenced and originated by Romanticism, characterized by its emphasis on the past and nature, was prevailed in England in Victorian ages, since they wished to return to time of Quattrocento Italian primitive art, the purest age of Christianity, and aimed to revive spirituality in art and religious painting. John Ruskin who had great influence on the Pre- Raphaelites emphasized such emotions and experiences of sublimity and beauty of nature. In his monumental and influential publication 『Modern Painters』 Ruskin came to describe his core concept ‘truth to nature’ and to defend the principal role of the later work of William Turner who followed the concept ‘truth to nature’ profoundly.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s art is characterized by its focusing on the studies of Bible, evangelical representation and it's the medieval revivalism. For Rossetti, religious beliefs and practices were regarded to be restored, having close relationship with the Oxford Movement, which began to influence to bring the revival of the Christian traditions that had been lost in the liturgy and the theology in church. The spiritual and religious sensuality and expression of his work <Ecce, Ancilla Domini!> which cared and followed the religious symbols and realism of Ruskin, is becoming to represent traditionally the symbol of Mary in Quattrocento Italian primitive art and the rediscovery of early Italian art, which rooted in Rio, Lindsay and Ruskin’s understanding and appreciating and interpreting of the Italian early Renaissance art, particularly Fra Angelico’s <Annunciation>.
