초록

서명호는 글에서 작품의 명칭임을 표시하기 위하여 쓰는 문장 부호이다. 본 연구는 서명호의 유래, 서명호의 규범적 기능과 용법, 인터넷 언어에서의 서명호의 변이 사용 등 세 가지 영역으로 이루어진다. 형식으로는 쌍서명호와 단서명호가 있다. 현재 중국에서 사용하는 서명호는 서양식 문장 부호에서 그 유래를 찾을 수 있는데, 여러 차례 개정을 통해 현재의 모습이 된 것은 1990년 이후이다. 중국의 현행 문장 부호 규정인 「표점부호용법」(2011)은 서명호의 용법을 ① 책, 권, 편, 신문, 간행물, 문서 등의 명칭 ② 문자, 소리, 영상 등으로 표현된 작품, 즉 영화, TV, 음악, 시, 조각 등의 작품 제목 ③ 중국어로 된 또는 대부분 중국어로 된 소프트웨어 명칭 ④ 작품 제목의 약칭을 표시할 때 쓰는 것으로 세분화하고 있다. 온라인 환경에서 서명호는 규범 용법과는 다른 변이가 일어난다. 이에 따라 서명호 변이의 유형과 변이의 새로운 기능도 본 논문의 연구 대상이다. 구문과 단어의 사용과 마찬가지로 문장 부호 역시 규범에 맞게 쓰는 것이 원칙이다. 그러나 언어는 일종의 유기체와 같은 동적인 현상이라서 언어 변이는 언제나 나타난다. 따라서 언어 변이의 남용에 대한 경계는 반드시 필요하다. 하지만 다른 한편으로는 언어 변이에 대하여 좀 더 객관적이고 포용적인 태도 역시 중요하다.

This research scrutinizes the usage of "Book Title Marks" in Chinese sentence punctuation, denoting punctuation symbols employed to signify that specific lexical units within a text represent the title of a literary work, such as a book, newspaper, or film. Moreover, it delves into the origin, evolutionary trajectory, extant regulations, and ongoing variances in the application of Book Title Marks from a scholarly vantage point. The inquiry is structured around three principal domains: 1) the genesis of Book Title Marks, 2) the roles and applications of Book Title Marks within prevailing regulatory frameworks, and 3) the emergence of nuanced usage patterns of Book Title Marks within contemporary Internet discourse. The lineage of the Book Title Marks in present-day China can be traced to conventions rooted in Western punctuation, undergoing iterative refinement since the 1990s. The prevailing Chinese punctuation standards, as delineated in the General Rules for Punctuation (2011), categorize its application into four primary domains: ① designations of published works encompassing books, volumes, newspapers, among others; ② appellations of artistic creations articulated through textual, auditory, or visual mediums, spanning movies, television programs, musical compositions, poetry, sculptures, and the like; ③ denominations of software predominantly or entirely scripted in Chinese characters; and ④ abbreviations denoting work titles. The evolution of Book Title Mark usage is spurred by the advent of the Internet and evolving societal norms, prominently manifesting in the broadened scope of application to include designations of tasks, conferences, and events, transcending traditional constraints to solely denote titles of literary or artistic productions. Furthermore, Book Title Marks are increasingly prevalent in annotations or notifications across social media platforms. Analogous to the prescriptive conventions governing syntax and lexicon, adherence to normative standards remains paramount in the utilization of punctuation marks. However, language, as a dynamic phenomenon unfolding temporally and spatially, undergoes continual evolution and metamorphosis, reminiscent of an organic entity. Consequently, punctuation marks, including the Book Title Mark, are susceptible to nuanced adaptations and shifts in usage patterns.
