어휘의 의미투명도가 한국인 중국어 학습자의 중국어어휘 습득에 미치는 영향 연구 (Efficacy of Lexical Transparency in Korean Learners’ Acquisition of Chinese Vocabulary)

초록

현재 중국어 교육에서 어휘 교육은 대부분이 단어 단위를 위주로 이루어지고 있다. 그러나, 한자로 이루어진 중국어 어휘 교육에서 개별 한자의 의미와 전체 단어의 의미적 관련성을 고려한다면 과연 단어 위주의 교육만이 최상의 방법인지, 혹은 보다 효율적으로 중국어 학습자가 어휘를 확장하고 자연스러운 읽기 과정에서 자연습득이 가능한 방법 및 학습책략을 제공해줄 수는 없는지에 대한 고민에서 본 연구는 출발하였다. 이에 본 연구에서 중국어 이음절 어휘의 의미투명도 분석과 그 투명도가 한국인 중급 중국어 학습자의 어휘 습득에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 중국어 이음절 어휘의 의미 투명도가 한국인 중국어 학습자의 어휘 습득에 유의미한 영향이 있는지를 실험을 통해서 살펴보고 그 분석 결과에 따른 보다 효율적인 중국어 어휘교육을 위해 제언을 하고자 한다. 할 수 있는 교수‧학습 방안을 고찰하는데 본 연구의 목적이 있다.
본 연구는『The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages(2010)』의 중급 어휘의 어휘 중 이음절 어휘만을 연구대상으로 한정하였다. 이 중 新HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) 4급 386 단어, 5급 799 단어, 6급 1,213 단어와 대조하여 이 어휘들에 대한 투명도 정도를 분석하여 투명어휘, 반투명어휘, 불투명어휘로 분류하여 연구 자료 및 실험문항으로 활용하였다.
본 연구 분석 결과에 따르면 중국어 어휘 투명도는 한국인 중국어 학습자가 중국어 어휘를 습득하는데 있어 통계적으로 유의미한 작용을 하는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 학습자의 학습시간과 선행 학습한 한자 수, HSK 급수 등과 어휘 투명 정도에 따른 습득 정도는 서로 상관관계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 현재 외국인을 위한 중국어 어휘 교육에서는 중국어의 기본 단위를 "사본위(词本位)"("단어"로서 기본단위로 삼는다)로 삼고 있으나, 단어와 관련된 연구에서 형태소 (字)에 더욱 주목하여야 하는 이유를 본 연구의 결과를 통해 증명할 수 있었다.
이에 본 연구의 결과를 활용하여 의미투명도가 한국인 중급 중국어 학습자들의 중국어 어휘 습득에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 성과를 중심으로 향후 단어(词)위주의 어휘교육과 함께 형태소 교육이 함께 이루어질 수 있도록 향후 중국어 어휘 교육에 새로운 교육 패러다임을 제시하고자 한다. 뿐만 아니라 어휘투명도의 활용은 향후 중국어 어휘 교수 학습의 근간이 되는 외국인을 위한 중국어 어휘 대강에서의 어휘 목록의 재배열, 사전 편찬과 중국어 교재 편찬 및 실제적인 교수 학습에 중요한 자료로 다양하게 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Current Chinese language education of vocabulary is centered mainly around the word level. Considering the semantic relevance between individual Chinese characters and the whole words in Chinese vocabulary education, however, it is not certain whether word-oriented education is the best or whether methods and learning strategies to effectively derive natural learning are available in the unaffected process of Chinese language learners’ enlarging their vocabulary and enhancing their reading skills. This paper was designed to make an inquiry into such issues. After analyzing the lexical transparency of Chinese disyllabic words and its effects on word acquisition for Korean intermediate-level learners of Chinese, we conducted an experiment to find out whether there exists a significant correlation between them. The purpose of the current paper is to explore effective pedagogical methodology for Chinese vocabulary education based on the analysis results.
We limited our research scope only to the disyllabic words out of the intermediate-level vocabulary of “The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages(2010).” With 386 words of Grade 4, 799 words of Grade 5, and 1,213 words of Grade 6 on the basis of the New HSK(Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi), the selected words were compared, analyzed in terms of lexical transparency degrees, and categorized into transparent words, semi-transparent words, and opaque words in order to be used for the research targets and experimental data.
The analysis results of this paper showed that lexical transparency of Chinese words statistically plays a significant part in learning Chinese vocabulary for Korean Chinese learners and that there exists a correlation between such factors as learning period, the number of pre-learned Chinese characters and HSK rating, etc. and the acquisition levels in sync with lexical transparency degrees. Considered that recent Chinese vocabulary education for foreigners counts words as a base unit, our study demonstrated a good reason why “morphemes” (Chinese characters here) should be paid more attention in word-related research.
Furthermore, we suggested a new teaching paradigm for Chinese vocabulary education in which morpheme learning should be accompanied with word-oriented learning, based on the effectiveness of lexical transparency in Chinese vocabulary acquisition for Korean intermediate-level learners of Chinese. In addition, lexical transparency can be utilized in rearranging lexical items in the Chinese vocabulary general list for foreigners which will be the basis of Chinese vocabulary education, compiling Chinese dictionaries and Chinese language textbooks, and constituting valuable resources in practical teaching and learning.
