야사서(野史書)에 나타난 구치관(具致寬) 기록의 왜곡양상 고찰 (A Study on the Distortion Patterns of Records about Gu Chi-Gwan in Unofficial History Books)

초록

본고의 목적은 역사 기술에 있어서 정권을 잡은 세력 중심의 역사서술도 왜곡되기 쉽지만 이를 바로세우기 위해 쓴다는 역사서술 역시 재고할 필요가 있음을 밝히는 것이다. 본고에서는 역대 야사에서 기존 야사를 인용하거나 정리하는 술이부작(述而不作)의 방식임을 내세웠으나 실제 내용에서는 편찬자의 의도에 의해 구치관을 계유정난의 주동자요 반대세력을 잔혹하게 처단한 추살자로 왜곡시키고 있음을 밝혔다.
윤순거의 『노릉지』와 이정형의 『동각잡기』의 계유정난 당일 기록에서는 구치관에 대한 언급이 없었으나 『청야만집』에서 『동각잡기』를 주로 인용하면서 『동각잡기』에서 ‘무사(武士)’로 표현된 부분을 구치관·홍윤성(洪允成)·유수(柳洙) 등으로 구체화하였고, 『연려실기술』에서는 『청야만집』에서 주로 기술되었던 부분을 본문으로 처리하고 별도의 출처를 표시하지 않아 일반적인 사실로 인식하게 하였음을 밝혔다. 본고에서는 야사서 편찬자들이 이렇게 서술한 이유를 시비를 두려워하지 않아야 된다는 송시열의 암시, 계유정난 당시 신하들을 추살한 인물과 도구, 방법을 제시함으로써 구체성을 높이려던 야사 편찬자의 의욕 등으로 추정하였다. 아울러 야사 편찬자들이 의욕적으로 이를 구체화하고 본문화한 이유는 구치관 등이 계유정난 당일 무사적인 거취를 보이거나 계유정난 이후 변방의 장수로 발탁된 공통점이 있었기 때문으로 추정하였다.
본래 구치관 관련 기록은 계유정난의 부당성에 공감하는 조선후기 사찬 편찬자들이 역사 바로잡기의 일환으로 집필되었으나 송시열과 같은 비중 있는 독자의 지적과 구체성을 높이려는 의욕 등으로 인해 결과적으로는 역사를 왜곡하는 오류를 범하게 되었음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a need to reconsider historical descriptions intended to straighten out distorted historical descriptions that could be easily made by the regime with power. It set out to demonstrate that the compilers of unofficial history distorted the facts about Gu Chi-gwan according to their intention by recording that he was the leader of Gyeyujeongnan and murderer that killed the opposing force brutally even though their unofficial history was said to follow the method of just describing and no making up to cite and sort out the old unofficial history.
There was no mention about Gu in the records of the day when Gyeyujeongnan broke out in Noreungji by Yun Sun-geo and Donggakjabgi by Lee Jeong-hyeong. Mainly citing Donggakjabgi, however, Cheongyamanjip specified the part that was written with "warriors" in Donggakjabgi by mentioning Gu Chi-gwan, Hong Yun-seong, and Yu Su. Yeonryeosilgisul included most of the records of Cheongyamanjip in its main body and did not mention the source separately, thus making the readers take them as general facts. There were two major reasons why the compilers of these unofficial history books described him in that way: one was the suggestion of Song Si-yeol that argued they should not be afraid of distinguishing right from wrong; and the other was their enthusiasm to increase specificity by mentioning the figures, tools, and methods involved in the murder of subjects during Gyeyujeongnan. In addition, the compilers of unofficial history specified them and included them in the main body enthusiastically because Gu and his colleagues took a position of warriors on the day of Gyeyujeongnan and were appointed as frontier commanders after the revolt.
In the second part of Joseon, the compilers of private publications wrote books on Gu Chi-gwan to straighten out the history based on their common opposition to the injustice of Gyeyujeongnan, but they eventually made an error of distorting history themselves due to the comments of important readers such as Song Si-yeol and their own enthusiasm to increase the specificity of their records.
