홈컴퓨터의 소비를 통해 본 젠더와 테크놀로지에 관한 연구 (Gender and Technology: A Case of the Consumption of the Home Computer)

초록

테크놀로지는 가치중립적이라기보다는 사회 내 문화적 가치, 권력구조, 젠더관계 등을 통해 하나의 문화적 산물로서 구성된다. 컴퓨터 또한 우리사회내의 젠더관계를 반영, 남성영역으로 구성되어온 경향이 있다. 본 연구는 홈컴퓨터라는 가정의 뉴 테크놀로지의 소비과정을 분석함으로써 젠더와 테크놀로지의 관계를 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 본 연구는 가족구성원들의 컴퓨터 소비를 이해하는 데 있어서 가족생활의 구조와 일상문화의 중요성을 강조하고 있다. 홈컴퓨터 소비는 하나의 사회적 과정으로서 가정이라는 특정한 사회적 맥락 안에서 이루어진다는 점에서, 본 연구는 컴퓨터 소비와 밀접한 관련이 있는 가정생활의 사회문화적 측면들에 관심을 두어 자녀교육, 가정의 시 /공간 조직, 가족 내 권력관계, 일과 여가와 같은 문제를 고찰하였다.
연구결과, 사회적 주체로서 가족구성원들간의 권력관계와 가족생활의 구조는 홈컴퓨터에 대한 접근과 이용패턴을 형성하는 중요한 요인인 것으로 나타났다. 특히 가정의 사회문화적 맥락으로서 가부장적 자본주의 사회에서 형성된 젠더관계는 홈컴퓨터라는 테크놀로지를 어떻게 이해하고 이용하느냐에 있어서 여성과 남성의 차이를 드러내는 데 결정적인 역할을 하였다.
결론적으로 이 연구는 뉴테크놀로지의 도입이 전통적인 젠더이데올로기와 젠더관계와 같은 기존의 가족구조와 사회관계를 변화시키기보다는 강화시키고 있음을 논의함으로써 뉴테크놀로지의 보수성을 보여주고 있다. 따라서 컴퓨터의 채택과 이용이 기본적으로는 사회문화적 맥락에 따라 다양한 소비행태가 가능한 역동적인 사회과정이지만, 그러한 소비행태는 기존의 사회구조와 권력관계 안에서 형성된다는 점을 고려해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In modern Korean society, the very culture of the computer has been male dominated. Since the PC entered the Korean market in the early 1980s, it has been clearly demonstrated that the areas of its production and consumption have been occupied mostly by men. This has contributed to defining the computer as a male domain, in terms not only of physical male dominance of those areas, but also of its social and cultural construction as a masculine technology. This can be understood in the sense of the gendering of technology, which has been formed through historical and cultural processes.
In this article, I focus on how this particular relationship between gender and technology arises in a social context, especially in the domestic context. My research suggests that gender relations and the structure of power in the domestic context are central to shaping family use of the computer, constructing women's and men's different experience of the computer, as well as its meaning, value and specific ways of use. My main argument is that, in order to understand this gender / technology relationship, the social context of computer use and the structure of gender relations in this context must be explored.
It has been found that the patterns of access to and use of the home computer are themselves negotiated and constrained by complex domestic politics and power relations between family members as gendered subjects. In particular, the domestic context and gender relations in this context are fundamental to women's and men's different interpretations and uses of the home computer, which are based on patriarchy ideology and economic relations in the society of patriarchal capitalism.
This study suggests the conservatism of new technology which tends to enhance the existing domestic structure and social relations, especially traditional gender ideology and the gender division of labour. Therefore, while the consumption of the computer is a dynamic social process, open to negotiation, it should be understood that such a negotiation takes place in the context of established relationships of power.
