서정주 초기 시에 나타난 미각과 후각 이미지 연구 ― 『花蛇集』을 중심으로 (Study on the senses of taste and smell shown in early period of Seo Jung-Ju's poem ― Focusing on Hwasajip)

초록

서정주의 초기 시 세계를 대표하는 『花蛇集』은 리비도와 에로스로 충만한 육체적 생명성의 이미지들이 꿈틀거리는 시집이다. 에로스의 구체적 행위에 있어 혀를 통해 성적 대상을 맛보고, 코로 냄새 맡는 과정이 필수적으로 이루어진다는 점을 상기하며 시집을 읽어보면, 서정주의 초기 시에는 미각과 후각 이미지가 유난히 잦은 빈도로 나타나며 강렬한 감각적 인상을 환기시킨다는 사실을 발견하게 된다.
미각과 후각은 인간의 오감 중 매우 중요하고 특별히 예민한 감각임에도 불구하고 우리 시에서 시각과 청각에 비해 잘 이미지화되지 않아 왔다. 혀와 코는 세계를 감각으로 인지하는 원초적이고 직접적인 기관이다. 귀를 막거나 눈을 감아 소리와 물상을 차단할 수는 있지만 일부러 미각을 제거할 수는 없다. 생명의 유지를 위해 음식물을 섭취하는 과정에서 맛을 느낄 수밖에 없는 까닭이다. 코를 막는다고 냄새를 피할 수도 없다. 숨을 쉴 수 없기 때문이다. 이처럼 미각과 후각은 생명과 밀접하다.
서정주 초기 시편의 강렬한 육체적 생명성에는 미각과 후각에의 집착이 나타난다. 미각과 후각의 이미지화는 이른바 ‘생명의 탐구’를 시업의 우선과제로 삼았던 서정주에게 반드시 해결해야 할 작업이었으며, 유교적 엄숙주의와 가부장적 가치체계 등 기성의 관습과 금기를 전복하고 파기하려는 내적 욕망의 가장 강력한 동력인 리비도의 구체적 수행주체였을 것이다.
서정주의 초기 시편을 이루고 있는 관능적 이미지들 대부분이 미각과 후각 이미지로 직조된 것이라는 데 착안하여, 각각의 이미지들이 서정주 내면의 욕망과 세계관을 어떻게 반영하고 있는지 살펴보는 동시에 맛과 냄새라는 주관적인 감각 자극이 구체적인 이미지로 형상화되는 과정에 주목한 글이다.

영어초록

The book Hwasajip is the collection of poems which represent the poetic world of Seo, Jung-ju, the poet. It is the book filled with the poems having physical life image filled with the libido and eros. If the books is read while reminding that in the detailed acts of eros, it tastes the sexual target using the tongue and it smells the odor using the nose, it is found that in the early period of Seo, Jung-ju’s poems, there are the significantly less appearances of tasting and smelling images and that they reminds us of the strong sensible impressions.
Though the sense of taste and smell are the very important and very sensitive senses among the human’s five senses, they have not been well imaged compared to the visual and auditory senses. The tongue and nose are the primitive and direct organs which sense the world with their senses. Though it is possible to disconnect the sound and image of things by closing our ears and eyes, it is impossible to remove the senses of taste. So, we have no alternative to taste the food while we ingest the food to maintain our life. Even if we try to close our noses, we cannot avoid the smell. It is because if we close our noses, we would not breathe.
As such, the senses of taste and smell are closely related to the life.The strong physical life shown in the early poems of poems made by Seo, Jung-ju shows the obsession with the sense of taste and smell. The making of images with the senses of taste and smell was what should be solved for Seo, Jung-ju who put priority on the so-called “research on the life”. For him, the most strong power of internal desire wanting to destroy the conventional practices and taboo such as the Confucian rigorism and patriarchal value system may be the motive for the libido.
Considering that most of the sensual images composing the early period of poems for Seo, Jung-ju are made with the senses of taste and smell, this study is designed to find out how each image shows the internal desire and view of the world of Seo, Jung-ju and at the same time, it focus on how the subjective sensory stimulus such as taste and smell can be changed into the detailed images.
